Hey,

I have a rs200z manual.. it has a bigger exhaust (i'm guessing thats standard) but it sounds horrible! Really tinny and just not nice.

I don't want the car to be to loud, but want it to sound a bit gruntier. Just wondering what you guys recommend doing and where? I am in West Auckland but willing to travel within reason.

Not wanting to spend heaps (like under $300ish would be good)

This has probably been asked but I can't search as computer throws tantrums.

Thanks!

Buy a heavy one! The thin walls on the light mufflers let a lot of noise out, especially to drum through the boot into the car.

I wouldn't get a straight-through myself, but some guys think they're fine...

I love the L-Sportline one I have, but that was a real one-off.

PS- download this version of your avatar and replace it. Same picture, just re-sized to suit the server.

Mine is a straight through, and has quite a nice tone, but it can get a bit loud at high revs under load. Sound bite at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9TKFCRhW6s8

Mine is the yellow one (the first you actually hear)

Any pics of whats on there now? Might want to have a chat to AndyC as he has/had a similar issue with his. Not sure if he's resolved it but he'd tried quiet a few different rear mufflers

My Kakimoto has about 3 resonators & a N1 style muffler, It's pretty quiet from inside the car below 5K so my guess is the more resonators you have the better it will sound rather than just relying of the rear muffler to do all the work.

Thanks Greeneyes, will delete it though - need to take some better pics before I put them up I think!

I don't really have any close ups of the exhaust.. but will try loading one, it is reasonably big but thinking thats just standard though and it is thin so you get that nasty vibration sound coming thru. Need to take it somewhere to get done, I don't do things with cars - maybe I shouldn't have broken up with the mechanic?!

OK, just resize them to 120pixels wide and they will load faster and look cleaner.

You can change a muffler, anyone can! 5 minute job, 2 bolts!- Keith

I'm going up to the workshop tomorrow to remake my cat back exhaust. Will be 3.5 inch mandrel bent mild steel, with a custom rear muffler. Hopefully will be quieter AND flow better.

The TRD rear muffler is hardly any louder than standard but has the growl, much freer flowing though. Can be expensive to get your hands on...

Just chucked on a 2nd hand TRD muffler, love it - not much louder than the stock, nicer sound and has a bite to it at high revs.

That's saying something ... especially as its a 5AT

The standard Altezza exhaust pipe has the 4-2-1 section, then a catalytic converter, 2.5" pipe until this stage.

The outlet of the catalytic converter is used to taper the pipe down to 2 1/4", it is this size to the first muffler, the next flanged section, and then all of the way back to the main rear muffler.

If you are going to go to a 3.5" (Which is a bit big IMO)

Then I would reccomend replacing the whole lot from the extractors back, otherwise you'll be going 2.5", down to 2.25", then back out to 3.5".

May as well go straight from 2.5" to 3.5", if you must.

Don't worry, 3.5" is not too big. It would all be 4" if only we could get that + the 2" external wastegate pipe past the steering shaft. 3.5 is f'ing pricey in staino ( like 3x the cost of 4").

2jz doesn't matter as much as the trap speed in my signature. I'd be impressed if a 2 litre ran over 127 mph in a full weight altezza!

If you don't want to change the look of the exhaust and just want to get rid of the tinny note try putting in a resonator or two which only cost about $80ish each to get put in at any exhaust shop.

Might want to have a chat to AndyC as he has/had a similar issue with his. Not sure if he's resolved it but he'd tried quiet a few different rear mufflers.

Sadly not...

I have an RS200Z 6MT - running a K&N Panel filter in a standard airbox. I started with the standard muffler but was looking for a better note and more response down low, so I started by removing the cat and replaced it with a resonator. That made it sound tinnier/raspyer and improved performance (but only slightly).

I then picked up a TRD muffler cheap off Trade Me which sounded different, a really nice low note at idle, but quite loud and really raspy from about 2,500 revs upwards. It also sounded great when you where hammering it, but I didn't drive it hard that often. I stuck with it for a while, but the raspyness was too obnoxious for driving around town (It sounded far too much like a Honda). It did improve performance. In the end I sold it to Jeremy... I have heard the video of it on his car and it sounds really good... seems to sound a lot different on the RS200 and AS200.

I replaced it with an old random muffler, that was just noisy and didn't sound good, so that didn't last long.

I then bought a second hand FGK/Fujitsubo muffler off Trade Me again... It's definitely the best one I have had so far, it has a nice note at idle and when you are engine braking, but it is still loud and very raspy from about 3,000 revs upwards. Performance wise it is the same as the TRD muffler. Since most of my driving is between 2,500 and 4,500 it is still too obnoxious. It will probably go up for sale when I find something else.

So I am still searching for the right muffler/sound. I have come to the following conclusions though:
- I should stop buying second hand mufflers off Trade Me
- Our cars can sound too much like Honda's
- The RS200's naturally sound raspy and it's hard to get rid of
- IS's, AS200's and RS200's all sound different and a muffler that sounds good on one wont necessarily sound good on another
- I might have to give up some performance and response for a better sound

I am considering having a simple one made that is quiet and eliminates as much of the rasp as possible (with a tip the same as the TRD one, it looks really nice). One muffler I haven't tried that I would like to is the HKS Silent Hi-Power muffler, however sticking to my 'No Second Hand Muffler' rule, that would run me over $1k which I can't afford. Can I get a good sounding (non raspy) exhaust that still performs well?

I still have the Cat lying around, will putting that back in make any difference?

If anyone has any ideas or tips, know's someone with a good sounding RS200 setup or know's an exhaust person that is good with Altezza's please let me know :P

Taking the cat out while N/A will definatly making it a lot more raspy, I used to have a resonator and just a different random muffler and tip from the exhaust shop was nothing special but the two together got rid of the horrible note and gave it a good deep sound.

The muffler by itself didn't get rid of it.

So your system was: headers to resonator to rear muffler?

Not the greatest picture as I took it with my ph. Try a couple of big resonators in the centre section like this. I'm not sure if that front one is a cat or not though. 4 mufflers do a reasonable job of keeping it quiet below 5K.

Headers, cat, resonator, muffler. If you take out the cat I'd suggest putting in another resonator.
