Mechanics Charged For Something He Broke; Should I pay?

Hey Guys,

I recently got 2 ball joints replaced. Got the bill today and its for ~$550.

Included in that charge is a used abs sensor of $125 which he broke when doing something with the ball joints.

Heres a pic of the invoice:

My questions are:

1) How close is the abs sensor to the hub and does it make sense that it had seized and he had to break it to get it off?

2) Do you think I should pay for this? It's Something he broke but (apparently) was seized and it had to come off to do the job.

Thanks in advance :)

Looks like you may have to remove the ABS sensor to get the hub off http://www.lexusownersclub.co.uk/forum/ind...showtopic=44611
I think it would be more likely he broke it being rough rather than it being seized. Depends on how honest you think this bloke is. Seems a bit expensive but then I'm not sure what a new one is worth

I'm glad my B/Js only cost a box of beer to have changed by a master tech ^_^

Shouldn't this be posted under suspension rather than engines also

I think you should have a chat to the guy, he has in some ways already been honest and admitted that it got broke during the service. Hes also got a second hand part rather than having to charge you for a new part.
Then it really comes down to is he trained to repair Toyota Altezzas, I suspect a trained guy would know what to expect when changing ball joints, but you may pay more for the experienced guy working on the car.

Which balljoints were being replaced, from memory the hub does not need to be removed when replaceing lower balljoints, not too sure about the top ones though.

Hmmm something fishy there!

To replace the balljoints the ABS sensor doesn't need to be touched!

The balljoint connects to the:
Steering knuckle
Lower arm
Tie Rod End

I also just asked the boys and girls in the workshop and service, and they confirmed my theory, no need to touch the ABS sensor, so if he broke it, he needs to pay for it!

He probably would have knocked it by accident removing the balljoint

Altezzas have a known issue with suspension links and the likes. After age, it seizes up and unfortunately sometimes, to break to get it off.

He "probably" had to brake it to get it off. But I'm not too sure about the sensors.

The ABS sensor is fitted to the hub with just a 10mm bolt, not hard to remove at all, talk about trying to con you.

Its like doing a timing belt and the mechanic saying he broke your water pump in the process and charging you for a replacement item (even though you do both at the same time)

if it was a decent shop he would not even give you the option to pay for it

he should definitely pay for that

um you dont need to touch ABS sensor i done heaps of them if i was you i would go back to the guy and ask why he had to remove them in the first place you just have to un do 2 17 mill dolts that hold it to the hub and tie rod end and the nut on the bottom of the balljont

Thanks for all the replies, so is there any reason he had to remove it at all?

Or is it totally unnecessary to even remove it?

Don't need to remove it at all. Guess it could make it easier tucking the hub out of the way if it was disconnected, but if it was seized you could certainly get away without removing it.

At work, if a customer needs a new tyre we keep the old one to show and to prove that the tyre indeed needed to be replaced because of canvas showing, sidewall damage, runflat etc

The mechanic should have the old sensor there to show you, if the damage is physical then no doubt it was something to do with replacing the ball joint and the mechanic has slipped, dropped, or bumped the sensor with his tools, parts etc

If the sensor is in good physical condition but is no longer working then I'd say the magnetic coil has failed which is quite a common problem according to Toyota on ABS sensors.

Let us know how it goes, also how did you go with those Coilovers you got from Trademe ages ago, did you find suitable Top-Hats?

They are still sitting under my bed!

I wasn't sure if I wanted to put them in my altezza or get a manual one (import probably) and put them in that. I think I will just put them in my current 5at altezza.

I spoke to a guy about putting them in and he said he can make top hats for me.

Will probably put them in Jan/Feb next year once I have finished paying of a trip to the UK.

Am a tad worried that since two (cusco and trd) strut bars did not fit (I posted a thread about it a while ago here) after I crashed it that there may be problems putting the suspension in.

A bit late but I just called him. Apparently he hoisted the car up or something to do the job.

Have taken screen shots of some of the replies and emailed him just now.

Cheers

LOL I had ball joints changed while the car was on a hoist too but didn't end up with a broken ABS sensor. Sounds like a pretty lame excuse to me

Just emailed my mate who did mine & he said

Yes I disconnected yours, even if they were seized you can get around it with them still connected
Why didn’t you send him to see me ?

Hi,

Since I have not received any communication since last week I will be paying the $541.01 minus the $125 for the work done.

Let me know if theres any problems.

Cheers,

Matt

And he came back and said this:
