Which Tyres To Get?; That time again...

My back tyres have worn out after 17,000km and need replaced. I'm running Direzza DZ101s in 215/40 R18. The fronts are still fine and I'll get quite a few more km out of them yet!

I'd like to move to something a bit more economical than the DZ101s - which either means a harder compound so less grip, or a cheaper tyre.

I went down to Beaurepaires today. There's not much in my size, so we're now looking at 225 wide (still 40 profile). The guy suggested some Roadstone N3000s, $240 each fitted. I think these are Nexen branded in other countries. I've had a look around and reviews are mixed - some have nothing buy praise, others are quite damning. I'd like some opinions from people I actually "know" on the Internet if possible.

I've also looked around Hyper who have a good range. I was looking at Falken ZE912. These sound like they'd give me better performance than the DZ101s in the wet, and last a bit longer. I also trust Falken more than "Roadstone". From Beaurepaires these would be $285 each on the car.

Any opinion on these two tyres, or recommendations for something else again?

Those Falkens look good. Asymmetric seems to be the way everyones going these days. I'm running Bridgestone Potenza RE001 & rate them over nearly everything else I've had in the past (DZ101 included). The old Roadstones are ok for a budget tyre but being directional they'll probably be a tad on the noisy side. Maxxis is another budget brand thats not to bad either. Federal 595 is ok. Hankook K110 is getting better. If you want a hard long lasting tread, Nankang is the way to go. Not much grip but last for ever. Out of the options at Hyper the Yokohama A.drive R1 are probably the best value for money at $185 each for 225/40 R18

*EDIT*
Just found these results from Motor mags '09 tyre test http://tyrereviews.co.uk/Article/2009-Aust...e-tyre-test.htm
Now to find a copy of the mag. If anyone has a scan they can throw up that would be great.

& why we don't buy cheap tyres http://tyrereviews.co.uk/Article/Autocar-T...Performance.htm

I put a set of Kumho Ecsta 712s on just before the Cromwell meet 2 years ago. I had to change the rears in June, and looking to replace the other pair in the next month or so. Did about 40 000 km on the rears, and the fronts only need replacing now because I was a bit slack on the alignment

I'm using a pair of Falken FK452, which are identical in performance to the Toyo T1-R at the other end of the car.

I don't know if they're sold in 18".

I'm running Dunlop DZ101's 215/40/18 on my Altezza. Rang around a few places over here in Mt Maunganui, and the best price I got quoted was $275 each (the highest was $325). I work in Hamilton and the lads at Top Town did them for $235 each. Been going to Top Town for years. Great company and excellent service. I ran Falken ZE512's (from memory) on my Levin (205/40/17) and they were pretty good too.
