Picked my car up just before i have 2.5 inch off the turbo then 1 resonator (hotdog) what ever you want to call it. But its still to loud for what I want. If I put another resonator in will it restrict the flow and will i need a new tune? Cheers team |

Nope- get the longest one you can and get it fitted. They are straight-through and have very little effect on the gas flow, which is why they also have little effect on the noise! How about a new rear mufler? There are some good ones that have low restriction but good flow still. I'll try to find the "Giant Muffler Test" on Google. It was excellent. here we go- here http://autospeed.com.au/cms/title_Giant-Mu...82/article.html and here http://autospeed.com.au/cms/article.html?&A=0384&P=1 |

I've got two resonators in my 2.5" exhaust, adding in the second only dropped it 2 db so hardly worth the money if you're just trying to quieten it down some more. |

So what did you end up doing Soiled Altezza. Get new rear exhaust.. only thing is i will need a new tune if i do that.. resonator should just be a put in and no retune right? |

Your tune wont be affected that much from just changing the muffler. I just left it as it was, it's actually very quiet (anyone thats heard my car can verify that) but when the revs drop it goes up to 108db. The testing place just said I've done all I can and it's not an annoying loud and let me carry on

I've got a 4" Muffler with only one Hot-dog style resonator between the turbo and muffler and mines not loud at all, just a nice deep burble, Its not a N1 Muffler, proper 5Zigen one with some kind of dampener inside of it |

Guess it all depends on how much money you're willing to throw at the problem. A new rear muffler will probably be the best bet option. In saying that have a chat to AndyC, (not sure if he comes on here much now) but he had noise issues & had tried various different rear mufflers to no avail (although I think they may have been 2nd hand). You could try a big old Edelbrock or M&H muffler from STA. I'm guessing baffles are the only way you're going to lose 17dB, straight through mufflers aren't really going to cut it. My Kakimoto is/was rated at 92dB when new. It's made up of 60mm pipe with 3 resonators & a rear N1 style muffler. It's pretty quiet under 5K

Restrictor in it for the test, pull it out for normal driving, and don't be a dick around cops making a whore of a noise and you'll be fine. |

Well its got to be certed for turbo so exhaust will have to be quiter for that. I dont want to trouble the cops and it gets right on my tits with it been so loud so something has to be done.. so yeah i thinking that i might put a new reosnator in see what that does.. its only $100-$150.. then if that doesnt work i might look at getting hks hi power silent cause i have heard good things about them..? But keep comments comming in cheers |

I know a guy who had a twin loop muffler on a NA altezza (3sge) that was pretty quiet, think he only had that and a resonator. Also you have heaps of length to install an extra muffler to get the noise right down (ie two good quality low restriction mufflers) - not to mention the turbo will make it quieter. I thought the legal limit was 94 or 95db My car will have to be down to 99db its NA and only have about 1m from headers to the tip! |

Yeah could fit 1 maybe 2 more resonators in but if one doesn't do it I'll go for a new exhaust.. So turbo guys what rear exhausts do you have? |

Resonators wont do much, you would need inline mufflers (different internals) I'm currently 2.5" straight through, with 1 muffler in the middle where the cat was and the end muffler. Deffo space to get atleast another 1 muffler into there. SilentOne has recently got a HKS Silent Hi Power system off me (forgot to get pics sorry) but heard it wasn't much louder, can help source and supply another if you get stuck stuck Legal limit for our car off the top of my head is measured at 4000rpm (and from 4000pm to idle) being a DOHC engine, 45 degrees from the tip at a 50cm distance. I'm managed to get 94.8dB, but those who have heard my car, it's only loud above 4000rpm anyway |

Just in a similar process 12die4. As Nick says, I've just grabbed an HKS Hi Silent - I've got a single 18" long resonator in there behind a hi-flo cat. Alas I haven't been able to test it out too much due to gasket issues on the new headers that were chucked in, I keep blowing them ![]() I'll hopefully suss this issue over the next week or so, and will report back. |

Lucky to get away with 3000rpm The LVV Standard states 4800 RPM if the engine has five or less cylinders and is of a double over-head camshaft and variable valve timing engine design; or This is in section 2.6, section 2.8 is about the test (45degress etc) and 2.9 gives the dB readings LVV Standard to exhaut noise is at http://www.lvvta.org.nz/stdExhaustNoiseEmissions.pdf |

in the case where a low volume vehicle certifier believes the engine speeds specified in 2.6(1)(B) are unreasonably high, taking into account the type and age of the engine, he may apply an engine speed for the purpose of the sound level test at which he believes is appropriate for the engine, and at which the engine may be safely operated. Maybe it went under this part of the section, as 4800rpm is pretty unreasonable. -Most- people don't go tearing around town at 4800rpm+. |

Went in today.. he said hes going to try put a resonator in on saturday.. if that doesnt work he said only other way to make it quiet is to loose a bit of power.. ie 20hp.. which i dont really want.. found out my exhaust is 2.75" so that could have like a effect on why it is so loud? trumpt sort of effect.. but i think new exhaust 2.5" with a smaller tip.. thats going to be my only option.. |

Got it at a crazy price through Nick & NST, although I don't know exactly how much it was by itself sorry (got a few other things at the same time). Originally the muffler was quoted at NZ$810 inclusive but ended up cheaper due to exchange rates and Nick being a parts negotiating legend. Gotta fight that mod bug, its a itch that can't easily be scratched (eyes the ECU market). |
