Head gasket quite likely, which is robbing you of power on two cylinders hence it feels like too high a gear. If flame flicked under the head gasket between two cylinders it could backfire. Start the usual blown head gasket routine and see how you go- check for water in the oil, oil in the water, compression going into the radiator... although best of all would be a leak-down test. Failing that, how about a bent valve as alimac said? Do a compression test while you're hunting the head gasket, although a leakdown test will show the bent valve also. |

After thinking about it I'm inclined to go with Keith on the head gasket. Possibly leaking between 2 cylinders, which probably wouldn't necessarily mix the oil and water, but could account for backfiring and black smoke(unburnt fuel) |

Would definitely check the piping for an air leak, I had it happen on my r32, ic connector had popped off under boost which screws your mixture( hence black smoke). |
