Hi All, After going through the process of getting some 4-2-1 headers, a Hi-Flo Cat, 18" Resonator and an HKS Hi Silent Muffler - I'm finding my n/a RS is still way too loud and incredibly raspy. Add to that the 5AT just adds to my cringe factor when its so loud. Don't get me wrong, I nabbed a 10kw gain which I'm happy with (will scan those dynos one day Jason ), its just too loud and raspy! What options do I have? I'm gutted the Hi Silent doesn't live up to its name however I can be too harsh as it is straight through unit and I've gone from the stock 2 Pre-Cats, a CAT, a bullet muffler PLUS the stock muffler to the hi-flowing gear above.. but still there has to be a happy medium? Should I try an in-line muffler instead of the resonator and take the hit on performance ![]() What do others have? The closer to my setup the better of course but I'm keen to hear anything at this stage! |

I've got an L-Sportline three chamber muffler, which I find is a great balance between volume, nice growl and performance. But I've just put twin SUs and extractors on the KE70 and took it down to have the extractors joined up to the back part of the stock system, and was chatting to the exhaust guy about muffler designs. He said the tri-chambers can be raspy on some 4cyl cars, so who knows?? The Datsun has the S-straight-through off my rally car from years ago, and that sounds great. A tad noisier than the Altezza, but perfect for a slightly modded P510. Have you read this- http://autospeed.com.au/cms/article.html?&A=0383&P=1 |

Thanks for that Keith - much appreciated. And I'm guessing here your angle is to swap out the resonator with an inline muffler? Great food for thought thank-you. Are the majority of these mufflers something we can get in NZ? (nick ?) |

I'm afraid I've never come across an L-Sportline for sale. They were(?) American. Mine came from Frylai, who started Altezzaclub with me in 2003. Matt imported and exported all sorts of stuff and the L-Sportline (and my cross-strut bar) were things he gave me and said "bolt these on your car and let me know how they work" However there are other brands that have the same internals if you want one for a rear muffler. Just make sure you buy the heaviest one you can as a lot of the 'bad' noise comes through thin walls. You'll note the stock muffler has three layers, steel, then fibreglass sheet, then a stainless outer. You'll find you can buy those designs of mufflers, there's bound to be a good straight-through or dog-leg to use as a resonator. Apparently that's where half the harshness goes, then the rear mufler quietens it and smooths it out. |

Hmm that's along the lines I've picked up after talking to a few people too, thanks Keith. Anyone else out there care to share differing setups? |

Wow my first post in years - and first look at the forums! I have HKS 4-1 extractors on my car which join into two resonators in the middle into some sort of muffler on the rear that has all the insides rusted out ([f**k] yoouuuu trade me). No cat converter - the exhaust note is really good! Its loud as obviously due to my shitty [f**k]ed muffler - but the sound is deep and not tinny or raspy at all I ideally wanted 1 resonator and muffler before the exhaust joins onto the rear muffler, but as I needed the centre section done that day (it didn't join up properly with the extractors and was leaking) they didn't have a muffler that was able to clear my rear sub frame brace. The standard pre-muffler wore through the top of my subframe brace (its hollow) so I need to get a piece of aluminium and have it welded in

Hmm I'm starting to lean towards the fact that the muffler isn't the issue. The Stock muffler is back on and it's quieter but definitely still very raspy. Dilemmas! Comon peoples, what else do people have all the way through?? |

OK, so with a decent drive across to Tauranga and back over the weekend I had a chance to hear the different levels of exhaust note. Even with the stock final exhaust back on, the rasp is definitely loud and obnoxious. So what's the more likely culprit?

Removing the cat or putting in a hi flow cat is probably the most likely cause of the raspyness in an N/A car. Try one of the more restrictive resonators it'd most likely stop it but may remove any kW benifit you've gained from the exhaust work you've done. |

Hmm fine balance huh - it's getting to the point where I need to do something. The Hi-Flo CAT is also the lowest point on the car right now too, by quite a bit so at this stage very much leaning towards taking it out and getting either another resonator (coby) in there or an inline muffler and eating the performance loss

Here is a little clip I just made of my exhaust sound taken from my phone so you can judge what yours perhaps sounds like compared to mine. exhaust clip How bad is the rasp you say compared to mine? Keep in mind my muffler has heaps of the insides rusted out |

Cool, cheers for that Goldberg. Mine's terrible compared to that, you have a nice engine note with no rasp ![]() I'll try put a clip up later this week or over the weekend if I get the chance - works keeping me driving the company car all over the show.. the Kaimai hills just aren't the same in a boat-like Mitsi Outlander :/ Cheers for the clip dude! |

Wow, heck yea could be a go'er - Thanks dude. I've already got the stock muffler back on there, it's that middle section that I'm trying to target, but I can't remember on the stock kit if the barrel muffler is up by the headers or back down by the exhaust tip? Edit: Found the Pic, thanks Nic ![]() ![]() I'm thinking of taking out the Hi-Flo CAT and replacing it with a muffler, unfortunately losing some of the gains made but enabling me to use my shiny new exhaust ![]() So I'm thinking, try and get my hands on the stock (4) in this picture or something similar, and re-using the resonator already in that section of pipe, although if the muffler or resonator is direction flow specific they'll be in reverse order to the picture. |

My middle section is a non restrictive resonator instead of the cat so you could pull that off and swap it over and decide on the noise to save you paying for it to get done to yours that may not get the result you want. |
