I just got stopped by the cops at a very quiet routine checkpoint on my way home about 10 mins ago. Having only ever been stopped once by the police, I have a few questions . 1. The cop asked me to blow into the breathaliser. None of the "say your name and address into this please" kind of one I have always experienced before. Have they given up using the ones you had to say your name and address into, and jumped straight into the blowing ones now? 2. He told me I passed and then said can you please tell me your age..... um?!?! Seriously?!?! What for?!?!?! 3. The supervising cop then came up to my car and said I needed to turn off my spot lights. He said I know they look cool on, but they are a hazard to on coming cars as they block their vision. I replied Really?!?!? and obviously with the confused look on my face he replied they are fog lights maam, and its not foggy tonight"..... ......hahaha, "ma'am" So my main question I have driven my car around every single night since January 2005 when I bought it, so we are talking my 6th year of driving my altezza with those spot/fog lights on. These are the white spot lights, not the yellow fog light ones. I have NEVER been asked to turn them off, and have been thru a fair few checkpoints over those years. I have even had cop friends in my car who have never said anything. What is wrong with having them on? Is it actually illegal to drive with them on??? Does everyone else drive with them on or off???? /20 questions

Here in South Australia the cops never ask your name or address, they just give you the breatho, its also illegal here to have your fog lights on if there is no fog, Got given a warning about it 8 months ago, its now a $180 fine here + 2 demerit points. The problem is the angle the beams point which can blind oncoming traffic, apparently, if the car's manual says they are driving lights they are allowed though (similar to the volvo lights). |

the white ones in our car actually don't blind oncomming cars because there is a cut off so I'd call them driving lights. |

They will not blind oncoming traffic , as when I went for my last WOF, they tested them , & I had to adjust one to pass( as it was too high !!!)

Even if they know most of the answers to your questions, they will still make it diificult for you. I always drive with them on at night and i've seen heaps of cars, not only altezzas, driving with them on. Dont know about the breatho tho?? Sometimes it's easy to smell when someone had a drink or 2 and sometimes not, i guess?? I'm surprised they didnt ask you to do a drug test

Some Police have changed from asking the name date of birth street address as legally... you don't have to provide them with that. Unless they are arresting you then you have to give your details out. I too have been told to turn my "fog lights off" by police i didn't want to argue with the "they are day time lamps" and went off my way. Now the WOF guy says my fog lights don't work and its illegal to have fog lights fitted and not work... but hang on.. i was told i wasn't allowed to have them on in the 1st place so whats the point / difference |

Not the first time something like this has come up. see here here and here IMO running spot lights in their standard form/ position do not at all affect on-coming drivers, but in fact aid the driver giving them a clearer view of the road immediately in front of them. When ours were out for a month or so it was horrible trying to have a clear view of the road in front of me at night without them. Being high beamed by an oncoming vehicle or someone with way to bright a bulbs is far more dangerous. or just as bad mis-matched light bulbs one blue one red. Honestly Diane i think he was just out to bust a young boy racer and was more than a little dissapointed when he realised there was no "revenue" to be collected from you. Not sure about the breathaliser thing i have always had the name and address thing from a distance. :ph43r: |

Thanks for your replies I drove around all weekend without my spot lights on and its amazing how noticably darker it is without them!! After paying attention to it all weekend, its clearly not too high a priority for the cops to police this "offence" when you see how many cars are driving around with their spotties on too! |

Hey Dianne. I quite often drive around with my spotties/fogs on during the day or when the sun is starting to go down. And I always have them on with my head-lights at night. I have heard of a quite a few people being told that they should only be used when there is actual fog. I don't think there is an actual law here stopping you using them. I do turn my off sometimes when I see the Policia coming though Motor-bike riders are encouraged to turn their lights on during the day, and there are also Police billboards around saying to 'switch on during the day, to be seen' So go figure

I don't get whats wrong with having yours driving lights on at night, they have to pass the same requirements as low beam headlights at wof time as far as beam angles so whats the problem? I've never been ticketed by any officer, and the NZTA only advise against it, so its not illegal from what i can find. I'd be more worried about the rear red fog lights which look like you'ver got your brake pedal stuck on. this could be a bit confusing for drivers behind. and yeah, like HOT2XS says, it is now a legal requirements for all motorcycles to have their lights on at all times... |

Fog lights are illegal to have on if there is no fog as they direct light up alot more than normal lights and can be a hazard to truckies (any truckie on here want to confirm this? Have only been given that reason before) As far as I know though the ones on the Altezza aren't 'fog' lights as such and there have been many discussions calling them 'driving' lights, but if the wonderful policeman is only giving you a warning I'd just suck it up and drive away with them off. If you'd gotten a fine for it then I'd be looking in to it more and trying to argue the fine. |

So what about those with the legana kit and have yellow fogs instead of normal driving lights. Are they fogs or are they driving lights? |

They're fog lights, they all have a straight cutoff at the top of the beam to stop it from blinding oncoming drivers. Driving lights have a pencil beam, very narrow and long distance, like regular highbeams. |

the blowing thing seams kinda odd ive only even done the name and address thing yes ive been asked many times how old i am. and ive been asked if the car is mine (old 89 corolla with kids and mum in the car) ive been asked to turn off fog/driving lights in town (just as i was comming into a town) driving a family van the driving lights thing is an interesting question i see cops driving round with them all the time and have been told by a cop that its safer. i find i cant see much without them on so i have them on all the time but would turn them off if i was asked to. |
