The heavy footed female!

In the last week or so I have noticed that the surge I had issues with a year or so ago has appeared again. When accelorating in 3, 4th and crusing in 5th gear its like you are tapping the accelorator pedal and it sends a surge like pulse through the car. You can hear the engine pulsing aswell which is a little embarrassing coz it sounds like you cant drive! I was reading about surges in Altezzas and have noticed that the TPS is a common fault in our cars. Is this correct? Last time I cleaned the MAF sensor, did an oil change, reset the ECU and also disconnected the TPS and drove it (painfully) with that disconnected for about 10 minutes and the surge seemed to disappear. If it is the TPS does anyone know how much a new sensor would be and how long it would take to change it over? My dad seemed to think it was the throttle body getting all gunked up last time but before I got to looking at that the surge went away after everything I did. As I have just had the cambelt done the budget is a wee bit tight so I would like to try and sort this out again myself. Should I attempt to do the same stuff I did last time (apart from the oil change coz thats not due for another 5000km) and see what happens? Any help would be appreciated! ![]() |

Have you cleaned out the throttle body? The TPS is easy to change over it's just the wire plug then two screws, just make a mark of where it's positioned too then make slight adjustments to make it idle nicely. I changed my TPS and it stopped this, but it may of only needed adjustment as the one I pulled out was giving the exact same resistances as the newone. |

Nah I havent cleaned the throttle body out yet. I didnt need to last time coz the surge went away before I got to it. Im heading out with some of the guys next weekend so if its still doing it then I might show them and see what they think. Its the most annoying thing in peak hour traffic so I would like to sort it out! |

Flick Nick a PM and see how much he can do the TPS sensors for. I had what sounds like the same problem with my Toyota Levin, and it was the throttle body that need cleaning out and the butterflies adjusting. The Altezza is a different car though, so it could be the TPS? |

Hey I have just dealt with this problem too, same model tez and year as you. Very annoying if it happens when people are in your tez, as its almost a bunny hop surge!! I thought it may have been MAF sensor but cleaned that and the throttle body and it was niether. I then put some injector cleaner in the fuel and that fixed it for me. Hope that helps yours too. |

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm sounds like I should try that. It seems to happen when im about 5000k away from needing an oil change. It did it for a few days last time I did an oil change and it went away so I didnt think much of it but now its doing it again and im about 4000k away. I might give the MAF a clean, reset the ECU and put some injector cleaner through it and see how I go. Your right about it being annoying! Its bad in peak hour traffic coz you can hear it pulsing outside the car. People must just put it down to me being a female driver hahaha. No female driving coming from me! Its foot down and go go go! I will keep ya all posted. |

i also have the same problem every now and then as funny as it sounds just by topping up the oil (dam value steem seals etc) it goes away... or a good oil change when its due it doesnt appear for a while.. i think of it as a oil indicator for when i need to do my oil... |

Heres the downlow so far: Oil isnt even registering on the dipstick so could be an oil change or top up later on today. I am still over 4000kim away from needing an oil change! ![]() MAF sensor cleaned. ECU/EFI/ETCS have been reset. Injector cleaner put in. New air filter. Going to pull the TPS and take it for a drive and then reset everything again and hopefully this fixes it. The seal around the bottom of the balck tube on the MAF sensor is broken. Could this need replacing? If so what could the broken one being doing to the car in the meantime? Anyone know? |

Righto, to add to the above I have done an oil change and seen that there was only 2.5L of oil left in the thing. I took it for a drive with the TPS unplugged (and looked like a complete knob) so im just resetting everything now. I have also replaced the spark plugs. If all this hasnt fixed it I really give up! <_< |

Have you checked the condition of the battery, battery terminals and connections. And earth connection points for the fuel pumps - under the front seats. |

Well it seems my saturday in the garage has paid off. Havent had any surge for the last two days. I seem to have dropped a wheel weight somewhere along the way tho, i have a horrible vibration. Looks like a trip to Tonys Tyres could be in order.

I think I spoke to soon about the surge going away. It seems to be there very slightly in 3rd gear and it is really obvious at the top end of 4th gear when im just about at the point where I need to change gear. Looks like I may need to clean the throttle body out after all and if that doesnt work I may need to replace the TPS at this rate. Here are some photos of my son Toby during our day in the garage trying to fix the car ![]() Helpin take the cover off under the car ![]() Face is starting to get grubby ![]() End result!

I am his mum and I let him get that way hahaha! Car still has a minor surge but I am going away this weekend so it will be parked up in the garage until I return. Next thing to tackle is geting the throttle body cleaned out and if that doesnt work, replace the TPS. I cant really afford to do much else for the next few months so hopefully the car doesnt get any worse.

Out of interest you're not running that Gull Force10 in it are you? I put some in mine when I was in Whangarei last year as they don't have regular 98 up there & my car started doing all sorts of weird things. My workmate had similar issues with it in his Integra Type R as well. |
