Hey guys Just wanted to show off my new server that im building. ![]() 2 x E5420 processors = 8 x 2.5ghz cores = 20ghz Not to mention these are known to easily over clock to over 3.0ghz. Plan is just 8gb ram for now, upgrade to 16 later down the track. I still need to source a pcix video card if any one has one laying around? |

HAHA all air cooled, would be fun to much round with water cooling just for the hell of it but for this boxs purpose its better of with just big heat sinks and fans

HAHA maybe i can fit my body kit to it seeing as its not going on the car for awhile! Im going to hopefully run ESX white box on it for some testing after that it will probably become a torrent box / nas / media server / net renderer box Actually now that you mention it i have 3 cans of red spray paint for a project that im not sure is going through. |

thats a fair bit of juice you got running there. a server just for your house or for business as well? I had a server made for my house but consumed too much power, so just used my main comp as the base server. If you decide to chuck on a bonnet scoop like stephen said, post up a photo and ill send you a lexus badge! Lexus server ftw! =P |

Eight 2.5ghz cores DOES NOT equal 20ghz mate... then i would be sitting on a 30ghz desktop lol. Otherwise not a bad basic setup ![]() Should show you some pics of the build i went out and saw tonight, so far he has dropped 15k into his desktop :| (ohh and as for fans he has 24 120mm fans, yes 24 of them lol, along with two liquid cooling loops with 3x120mm fans on each radiator, its nuts) |

Bloody hell thats insane!! 2.5ghz x 8 = 20 for my purposes ( net rendering is a 100% threaded workload ) What kind of processor are you running to equate to 30 ghz?? There is no single processor round that i know of capable of that. As far as i know the fasted processor currently avalible runs at 3.33ghz on 6 cores which ends up at 19.98? overclocks seem to be around 4ghz... still leaving you at 24ghz? (not to mention costs more that double what i am paying for this setup for just the cpu.) |

I have 8 virtual cores running at 3.7ghz, so 29.6 all up (close enough to 30 for me :P), Remember the higher end I7s have 4 (or 6) physical cores but they also have another virtual core for each physical. I have stressed mine, 100% load for 5 hours, still ran cooler than my old pentium 4, and this is with a 0.7ghz clock on air, I plan to OC the hell out of it one day but don't want to trade off on the RAM speed too much, comes annoying with 12gb of the stuff. |

Ah mate thats hyper threading, great for when you have lots of applications that are throwing different loads but wont make any difference in my case (i will have 8 threads each taking as much cpu power as they can get) Ill run some benchmarks when im done so you can see what im talking about. What helps out these processors is that it is 8 physical cores not to mention that they are xeons so they are a bit more than the run of the mill. Each chip has 820 million transistors and are still at the same 45nm tech as the i7s and each has 12mb cache The top of the line quad core i7s (975) have 731 million transistors each and 8mb cache. The i7s do have a higher clock speed though along with a faster link to your ram which is awesome. 12gb is nice, ill only have 8 to start with as im having trouble finding buffered ecc ram thats needed for server boards/procs Another downside for me is being a server board no bios baised overclocking but there is a pair of pads you can cover on the proc that will make it run at 3.0 per core, from there you can clock them a little bit more in the os. Surprisingly the fastest systems you can get right now actualy come from amd by using 4 6168 procs which produces more processing power than ours combined!

that will make an awesome ESX server - i did it the lazy way with a 2u rack q6600 with 7 gig of ram your thing looks similar to some of the newer 2k3 HyperV server we are putting in at work with dual quads and 20 - 30 gig of ram i dont bother using my desktop as a server desktop is desktop server is server - best way to do it but the q6600 has no issues running 3 virtual (SBS server, win 7 terminal, win xp terminal) + bas os windows 2k8 R2 also water cooling is awesome ! |
