Hi everyone, since the forum is half dead, i decided to post up something.
This could help me decide which tv i might buy.

What should i look for when choosing a LCD/LED??

I want something 40"+ Full HD 1080p. I would prefer something with a good or well known brand. Not one of those crappy Soniq, or Hisense.

ATM theres two that got to my mind.

An LG 42" Full HD LCD TV 100hz for $1291
and a SONY Bravia 40" Full HD LED LCD TV (KDL40EX600) for $1499

So which to choose? hrmm.

LG = low grade.
Sony and Samsung have the best grade pictures in my view. My advice is to just shop around. Dont rush and read the reviews.

I'd go for a Samsung, and talk to the shop you buy it from most places are willing to drop a couple hundred off the marked price.

Get a Sony so then you can use the Bravia Sync function to connection the tv with the PS3.

I've heard that as Samsung make their own LCDs therefore they have first choice and pick the best from batches and on-sell the lesser quality(more dead pixels etc.) displays to other manufacturers. Most manufacturers outsource the actual LCD and don't get the first choice.

that of course could be complete marketing BS :D

however I have to say when walking into the store the Samsungs often stand out as being the pick of the bunch.

i just bought a new tv just recently

i was pretty much only looking at samsungs as ive had one previously and hasnt/didnt let me down, and + they make sony screens anyway

didnt think it was worth spending the extra money for an LED, as i wasnt going to wall mount it, so thought may as well just get a LCD

so i ended up getting the samsung series 6 40" model number LA40C650, bloody awesome picture and i compared it with the LED tv that was out at the time and it was on par if not better than the led screen

Someone correct me if i am wrong as i stopped caring a year ago about TV tech but there are no TRUE LED tvs out yet, they are just LED backlight, so the actual screen is the same as an LCD but instead of using a CCFL to get the white light they use LEDs,

So really LED is just a load of wank?

Unless they have finally perfected OLED screens

Yes all LED Screens are just back lit.

The next thing in full on LED screens looks to be Quantum dot LEDs.

Yeh led back lighting only, still from using led back-lighting there are advantages (main one being the thickness of the screen)

Biggest advantage would have to be contrast ratio. (Edit: In my opinion)

Old flatmate had a 55" LED series 7 Samsung and man was it good. Very noticeable difference between that and standard LCD

Get a Sony so then you can use the Bravia Sync function to connection the tv with the PS3.

:D spot on here! the sony Bravia Sync with ps3 is brilliant!! As a ex-samsung owner (Series 3, still have it in chch as a pc monitor) I would never go back to samsung after i owned the sony bravia's (now sold to a friend due to relocation to Auck.)
Not claiming to be a pro in tv's but not all sony series are good sometimes sony makes better monitors than samsung and others sometimes the other way round. Really depends on what model you choose.
You really need to pop into borders and look at those tv monitors magazine reviews (stick with the europe and state ones, the nz ones are a bit weird**opinion sometimes) and go to the shop and compare it for yourself, as some people like brighter lighting and others would like more of a original colour experience or more of a percesion detailing etc etc... Theres no def better brand tv all the way down. (just a personal opinion)
1080 full HD+ 120hz (ie. bluray ready) and less than 5ms response time with more than 3+ HDMI ports is atleast a minimum requirement for da future i would reckon.

Personally I like Samsung, recently upgraded from a 5 Series to the 7, and no words can explain the difference, it's just brilliant, for the same reason as above, was told that Samsung make their own screens so i went for that.

Bravia Sync would be good though, pity only the PS3 and Home stez is Sony and not the TV :(

Well no more then a usual room, it has cedar blinds which can be closed to darken the room which I would imagine the darker room would be more suitable for the plazzy?

Yeah I'm not that fussed with the 3D option as of yet, more of a nice to have feature where in 3 years time it may be worthwhile to use with more 3D movies become available?

I must admit the LCD/LED looks pretty damn trick especially with the aluminium stand.

Im currently at DSE, im going off plasmas of late. i think the LED backlit TVs have some of the niceset looking pictures out at the moment.
save the pennies.I've been to the samsung 3D preview and didnt rate them at all.
Panasonic make the best 3d picture as the pictures come out at you, samsungs picture goes deep into the TV frame. looks weird.

very good choice, i wouldnt get a samsung under series 6
i think Sony screens look ok but way to expensive for what they are, so thats where samsung are better
