Hi guys, just wondering if an aftermarket exhaust system will improve the performance of an auto as200? Or will it be basically the same but different sound muffler?
Cheers

Depends what ur looking for. have you turboed ur tezza? If not id b loking for a 2 1/4 inch exhaust. This will still benefit ur low end torque. Something like a 3" would be stupid. Ur low end performance will suffer too much! Unless youve done sufficient modifications. :D!

Exhaust id reccoment would be the HKS Hi-Power Silent. Chek it out. :D!

Otherwise, have a look on the forum, theres HEAPS of info. :D!

Nope car isn't turbo'd and that HKS was the one i was looking at getting :)
Do you mean 2 1/4" whole way through including tip or just exhaust bit and any sized tip?
Yea i'll have a look around. Was just wondering what other user's experiences were...
Thanks

Factory pipe on the RS200 is pretty close to 2.5" anyways, not sure about the AS200 though. The axle back section is smaller at about 2" so maybe go with a axle back system and remove one of the resonators.

Can sound really tinny if the headers are stainless though :(

Is that most likely what it'll sound like on the car?

Just got a quote for the HKS rear section only.
HKS Silent Hi Power Rear Section

$995.00 - Silent Hi Power Rear Section
$118.13 - Labour
$20.00 - Sundries

$1133.13 - Total

Does that look reasonable?
And what will the difference be in getting the rear section only as opposed to full system? Performance and sound wise?
Thanks

Man, for that price I'd be fitting it myself, it's not all that difficult...

If you can get your hands on a TRD Version S muffler it'd be worth it, I've seen a couple floating around on Trademe for not very much, one sold recently (without the pipe though...) for about $60. I got mine for $300 and it sounds pretty good. Got some video of it on my VIP build thread if you want to know the difference in sound between factory, TRD muffler and no muffler at all...

Lol true, i've emailed Nick. Just gotta wait and see what mufflers he can supply.

@ jeremyflower - You know your exhaust, was it a full system? or just tip? And did you notice any performance gain?

It's an axle back system, replaces the muffler and exhaust pipe from the rearmost flange.

I will say that I noticed performance gains but I can't say that I had them measured or anything. Unfortunately, cars always seem to go a lot better when they sound better but I'm convinced there was an actual horsepower gain. The difference in performance was similar to when I fitted a K&N replacement filter.

K&N is washable, TRD you just have to replace at huge expense every time...

Sweet just an update....i decided to go ahead and get the HKS silent hi power exhaust. Have definitely noticed improvement in throttle response and speed.
With regards to sound though, it sounds alot like stock. Silent, definitely living up to its name. Any chance i can increase the noise a bit with other mods or will it be silent for good?
Also, if anyone wants pics/sound clips, of what it looks/sounds like, let me know.
Thanks :)

Taken the cats out? Better flowing headers? Both those will make it louder.

Headers would cost quite a bit aye, if it's possible at all for a 1GFE...what about taking out cats? Would that hinder performance and/or is it illegal?

Also, here's a sound clip of the exhaust, about 9 secs into the video, the noise is of a car passing by xD

Hope it helps :)
Thanks

in Australia IF you do get caught without a CAT its a massive fine. i think between $8k-10K fine around here.

Not sure on legality of removing the cats, but mine went through a cert with out it even getting mentioned.

So unless the law has changed recently there should be no problem with removing your cats in New Zealand.

And headers can range from $500-$2,000 so don't have to be that expensive.

At the end of the day though chasing power out of the 1GFE is like flogging a dead horse.

I just went through my warrant with a 2.5" straight through mandrel bent exhaust system, only type of muffling would be the turbo and the tip, no questions asked. So I'm pretty sure removing your Cat's is legal, unless there's a law regarding new imports, or vehicles made after a certain date?

The "CAT" issue isn't illegal (yet)

I have been doing decat centre pipes for our cars and even 1 to an officer! Can do them with 2 resonators (factory have 1 cat and 1 muffler), 2 resonators, or just no resonators!

Got to admit I'm a little confussed, I thought that after a certain year (2008 for arguments sake) it was illegal to modify the exhaust of any new imports-eg. geting rid of the cats????
