Planning Trip To Aussie Next Year, Ideas?; Any ideas or suggestions?

Planning to go to Aussie next year around easter for holiday, roughly two weeks. The plan so far is go fly from Christchurch to Sydney, drive a rental car to Cairns, then fly back.

I've been to Melbourne/Brisbane/Gold Coast a few times, girlfriend never been to Aussie. Would like to go to Great Barrier Reef, we like hot weather, beaches with water warm enough to swim, sand toboggan, snokeling, she'll probably want to do some clothes shopping in the big cities.

We're hunting for ideas/activities/iternary, so any suggestions are welcome. We would prefer free or good value activities. Obviously it would be nice if we do stuff that are different to New Zealand. Would we be able to see any outback stuff, are outback stuff worth seeing?

Is driving from Sydney to Cairns a good way to travel? Where should we stop along the way? Is it worth the drive, or better to drive to Brisbane then fly to Cairns?

In terms of budget, we'll probably be staying at tents/backpackers, going on day trips are fine.

Get inland! Vastly different to the coast.

That's a long way you're talking about, 2500km, this is a big country.

Google maps will give you directions Sydney to Cairns going inland through Emerald, a long way from the water! While you wouldn't want that particular route, you should try to get in through the Tamworth/Armidale New England area, or Dalby/Taroom or somewhere like that.

A great idea would be to go in at Rockhampton and through Emerald to Sapphire. You can go digging for sapphires, as we have, and have them cut into jewels in the town. If your GF needs a new ring or earrings it is a great way to get something really unique.

Almost 90% of Aussies live on that long coastal strip from Adelaide to Brisbane, boring as hell!

The bit I'd avoid is Sydney to the border up the coast road...

If you were coming over THIS week you could pop in for a cup of tea and we could go to the Bathurst V8Supercars

Assume tassie = Tasmania?

Was just considering whether 2500km is too far to drive for our trip. Yes we can do it, but the prospect of being stunk in a little rental car in most of our trip isn't exactly appealing. If we have unlimited time that's fine, but we don't.

Would driving from Cairns to Brisbane, then fly from Brisbane to Sydney be a better choice?

So far we're considering:

- Green Island
- Barrier Reef
- Fraser Island
- Some sort of rain forest?
- Anywhere we can see red sand that's always on postcards?
- Somewhere good for native wildlifes?
- Whatever's in Sydney?

If there're any nice locations with less crowds that'll be good.

Why not give Sydney a miss and just do Queensland on this trip. Concentrate on the beaches and barrier reef up there and go inland to see some outback.

Great tourist rainforest & butterfly park at Cairns, up the train and down the cablecar, or vice versa.

If you want to see Aussie, look through here-

I second the Whitsunday Islands. The wife and I were there in March this year, the water is at about 24 degrees and the weather was awsome untill the cyclone came in :( Still had the most amazing time
