Hey

I am currently in need of all the 100kkm essentials done. i have asked around and the cheapest i have got is $850.

Thats for:
Cambelt
Tensioner
Hydraulic Tensioner
Idler
Crankshaft seals
Camshaft seals
Water pump
Spark Plugs
Gearbox Oil
Engine Oil
Oil Filter

Just today, i remember, i had a mate who use to work for Toyota (in China) and is fully capable of doing all this so i decided to ask him. He said for mates rates he'll do it all for $300-400. I was really keen but then another mate said, if something is to go wrong, you will not have any warranty with it as he is not NZ Qualitifed.

What do you guys think? Do you think its worth it? Its half the price and i do trust him. What do you think are the chances of something going wrong? All feedback welcome and please feedback ASAP as i will be doing it Friday

cheers

I trusted a mate once. I will NEVER trust a backyard/wannabe, even if qualified oversees mechanic, again. Quality and peace of mind topples any cheap unwarranted labour.

if your getting a "cash" job done, you'll have no warranty anyway. doesn't matter who you get to do it.

if you want a workmanship warranty you'll need to get the job done with an actual business.

for your genuine toyota parts warranty to apply they need to be installed by a qualified technician. and you'll need proof.

$300-400 only just covers the price of parts, and I wouldn't be going to anyone that couldn't provide a warranty with their work.
$850 actually doesn't sound too bad either considering the time it takes to replace a cambelt. Just think, if they stuff up and your cambelt is not installed correctly and consequently fails you could be up for an engine rebuild, which is gonna cost a LOT more than the $400 you just 'saved' by getting a cashie.

For a big job like the cambelt, I would recommend getting someone to do it that can provide a paper trail.

$850.00 was for labour only? Only seems to take approx 5-6 hours here to do the job?

They have probably allowed for a bit more, as under quoting will kill any workshop, and the quotes given are most likely to be very safe.

Just remember when doing the waterpump you need to allow for a couple of litres of coolant aswell

As Nick said, does the $850 include parts? The parts alone will be about $400, so ends up being about the same as mates rates.

If it's labour only, then that's a bit of a rip off. Don't think even a Toyota dealer would charge that much.

i too was presuming that the $850 included parts, if that's just labour that is pretty steep.

the Cam belt kit (including tensioner etc) is nearly $400 by itself and that is going by Nicks excellent prices... ( http://z4.invisionfree.com/lexusaltezzaclu...?showtopic=5486 )
spark plugs for a 3gse will set you back around $100,
GBox oil $70 (make sure they use decent stuff, redline ftw)
+ decent engine oil etc.

they'll also drain the coolant so you''l have to replace that...

and 5 hours labour was about right when i got mine done. i think the rate was about $80/hr so you do the maths...

I paid $250 odd labour to do the whole job, and that included a bit of oil (I gave them 5L) and new coolant. I had a coupon for $150, and offered to pay a bit more since the coupon was over a year old..

Oh, and the mechanic used to be the service boss at Toyota here apparently :)

Go get a quote from your local Toyota dealer. You may be pleasantly surprised.

I am amazed people have had problems getting timing belts done.. Must be a lot of cowboys out there. Says a lot about the skill of the trades people out there today!! If you can't do it yourself you can't really beat the back up you get from a toyota dealer.

From my experience with the engine manual in hand, its one of the most simple timing belts I have done, all the timing marks are easy to see and line up properly, and there is heaps of room to do the job in the car (unlike alot of E-W configuration engines)

Guess a lot of shops never actually bother with a manual, and rush to get the job done quickly and therefore miss small timing errors causing all the problems
