Suggested Itinerary For Whitsundays?

GF and I are doing an Aussie trip, from Cairns to Sydney.

Part of the trip, we'll be arriving by car to Airlie Beach on 1 March, and leaving by plane to Sydney from Hamilton Island on 4 March at noon.

We'll most likely be camping/backpacking.

Can anyone suggest an itinerary on our days there? Some questions:

- Where should we stay? Prefer somewhere quiet.
- Recommended things to do? Can we swim in the water?
- Airlie Beach, Whitsundays, and Hamilton Island are all separated by sea, which seems like transport will be costly. What's the best way to help save some cost?

I read there're campsites on various islands, and there are places to hire camping gear, but just not sure of the logistics, as we'll probably want to go to Whitehaven Beach at some point right?

Not sure on the best places but i know how to get from island to island.

Head to a marina and checked the notice boards, Their are people looking for company and will sail anywhere.

Sounds strange i know, I was up there a few years ago and the notice board was full....

You can swin there, the water sits at about 24 degrees, but we were there about the same time last year and you have to watch out for Irukandji jellyfish.

Hamilton Island was super expensive to stay on, try these - http://www.derm.qld.gov.au/parks/whitsunda...ds/camping.html

Holy crap, that jellyfish is tiny! What do we have to do to try and not get sting? I suspect they're a bit difficult to see being so small and transparent?

Thanks for the camp sites, we knew about those and that's where we thought we may stay. Is it better to stay at one of the smaller islands or at Whitsunday Island? If we stay at a campsite on Whitsunday Island, is it feasible to walk to Whitehaven Beach or is it too far?

Looking at the map, just seems like Airlie Beach, campsites, Whitehaven Beach, Hamilton Island are all over the place, so wasn't sure how easy/cheap it would be to hop from different places.

Yeah can't remember exactly how much the ferrys were, but it was quite expensive, maybe $60 or more from Airlie Beach to Hamilton Island. You can get stinger suits for the jellyfish but I didn't bother most of the time. Some of those campsites are within spitting distance to Whitehaven Beach. Are you still gonna go with the cyclone coming? We got out just before one hit last year, and it gets quite wet around that time of year.

Goodluck withit mate! Weather isnt the best though. It is quite expensive now. It used to be around $70. I was going to go a few weeks back. Didnt go though because 1). The weather was no good and 2). The price for a 3 island cruize was like $150 p/p or something. I wouldnt reccomend on going on one of the 5 island cruizes as its too rushed. Id do 3 at most! Theres a few places at Airle Beach so shop around and find the best deal!! Goodluck!

We got all the tickets booked and paid, so we'll be going. I knew the weather isn't the best this time of year, but this is the only time that suits my GF. Didn't expect the biggest cyclone to arrive this year though lol. Hopefully things will calm down in the next few weeks.

Hopefully we can find some loney soul on the marina notice board. :D

On Wednesday afternoon Tropical cyclone Yasi was a category 5 system with wind gusts near the centre around 290 km/h.....

Yasi poses a serious threat to people within the warning area, particularly to the highly populated areas between Cairns and Townsville.

At 3 pm EST, the cyclone was moving west southwest at 35km/h and is expected to cross the coast between Innisfail and Cardwell at about midnight.

Extremely dangerous sea level rise is expected to accompany the cyclone, as its crossing of the coast will occur close to the time of the high tide. Low lying areas between Cairns and Proserpine, including the Whitsundays are expected to experience flooding.

Don't worry it will all be over by the time you get there... We should be on cyclone Zaza by then! :D
