I pulled the airbox out and checked the contact plugs on the throttle body, and also noted the cable does nothing for about 1/3 of the accelerator, then it manually opens the butterfly up to half open or so by the time the cable is 100% open. So the electronic throttle does the rest.

So greeneyes, is this a normal response for the throttlebody unit ??? the butterfly should not be fully opened by accelerator cable ?? I have noticed my does the same thing, I worry this could be an indication of new placement.

To Soiled Altezza: So the clicking noise that I can hear from my throttle body unit is also normal ?? I can hear a few clicks after a mid range revs, a few slight clicks when idle ?
your input will be much appreciated.

Well, putting it back together slowly. On Xmas day I got the power steering back on, the worst part of it I think.

If you ever take the head off, drain the power steering and strip it all off! The second worst area is behind the head, the water connection/oil drain you can't see and can hardly get a spanner onto.

The rest is OK, although I haven't pulled the head down or put the cams on, I thought I'd get the ancillaries on each side assembled in case I have to pull stuff apart to put something else on.

I suppose you can do this in your sleep Jason!!

So far, the full gasket set doesn't include a gasket for the water connection behind the water pump, or the two semi-circles for sealing the head at the back of the cams, or the two seals for the magnetic cam timing sensors. That's strange Nick...

One came into work a few weeks ago, similar problem but they already had a new head to go on, 6 1/2 hours later the customer drove it away. Easy motor to work on once you've done it a few times :P

Arrgh! I put the cams in & sealed the front bridge to the head, and fitted the VVTi cam seals, then thought, I'll just check the tappets now its all bolted down...

One of them is at less than 2thou!!!

So I went out and bought my second-ever set of feeler gauges just to make sure before I have words with the engineer who hit me up over $200 to do them!!

Good grief! Greeneyes runs!! I'm amazed, hit the key first time and instant start!

So... I had the no-gap shim ground down 12thou, and of course ended up with a gap of 24thou! Somehow it just wan't sitting in the right place, as you said Jason.

So I ordered one from Toyota here for the 3SGE in the last MR2 and after a couple of weeks it turns up...

Wrong type of course!! The flick-out large version, and none of mine available in Australia.

Luckily celicaRA45 sold me one of the right size and that solved that problem.

Now I have to put engine covers back on and bits & pieces and find out why the engine check light is on. No leaks or noises thank god!

Now, who knows what this screw does and where it should be set. I assume its a sort of fuel regulator, flow or pressure.

It was loose when I lifted the plastic cover off. I was looking to take a sample of that tank of fuel before I refill it. Maybe the problem is still at Caltex's door!

thats the fuel damper ,and sometimes the screw will come loose ,just screw it back in and when you start it up it will move outwards which is normal

Ok, ta- I'm thinking of taking that joint apart to get a litre of fuel out.

The engine check light was a lack of MAF sensor connected...

Everything seems fine, so its time to get a sample of fuel in case I feel keen enough to pay $100 to have it tested, then gas it up with 98. Followed by new front tyres (the inner edge got away from me!! ) & a wheel alignment.

Then an oil change before Mrs Greeneyes takes the daughter back to Uni in Armidale, the 1200km trip again.

::sigh:: Now I know a lot more about modern fuel-injected DOHC motors... but I didn't wnat to have to learn on my Altezza!

Well, taking the fuel line connection off the fuel rail got me the sample, but you have to actually crank the motor to get the fuel pump to start, and it keeps going when you turn the key off !!!! :o Luckily its just a couple of seconds more & it filled the jar and didn't really spill any.

So, the first trip up to Armidale and back went off fine, that's 8hours each way & everything works just like it should. Caltex haven't done anything about my claim, not that I expected them to really...

...and, if you need to take the head off your Altezza PM me!!
