Hey guys, I don't know if there is something wrong with the motor or something wrong with the fuel i'm using. I have a feeling the head gasket is leaking though because there some oil around the head. the car has 126000km and has all the major services done etc. so I don't know what may be wrong with the car :S any help well be greatly appreciated. to give you an idea. car is always filled with at least 95 octane get around 80-110km at the 1/4 tank line and maybe 200km at the 1/2 tank line. this doesn't seem right to me. |

Also your car consume engine oil? I say gasket =] 1/4 tank should be around 140-150km 1/2 tank should be around 300-320km At least yours doesn't shake like it is gonna die |

Have you checked your maf sensor? I was getting horrible fuel consumption before I cleaned mine, something like 350-400 ish km a tank. Did an oil + oil filter change, cleaned the maf sensor and throttle body and on the next tank I got ~530 km with one bar on the fuel gague before empty! |

Ah I see, Have you tried resetting the ecu? Did a bit of reading and that seemed to help a few is200 owners. You could also check your tyre pressure, air filter and spark plugs, if you haven't already but I don't think that stuff would affect your fuel economy that bad. Are you getting alot of white or black smoke from your exhaust? |

yeah I might check my spark plugs, they were changed at the 80000km service, might check the 02 sensor as well. i reset the ECU a couple weeks ago that did barely anything. then I had the cambelt kit installed with a service and it helped briefly and now the consumption has gone through the roof. theres no CEL so i dunno whats going on. there is a little bit of white smoke, but thats only when its really cold (so condensation) however I did notice a little bit in the warmer months. Its odd, alignment is out i think as well one of the tyres is wearing a lot faster then the other 3 |

I have white smoke when it is summer, only on cold start. Yours does the same? If it is, that might not be a problem |

These measurements are not accurate. The fuel gauges are usually not linear. Fill tank, zero odo, drive to almost empty, fill again, read odo. You should drive 300-400km to get a good idea, that would be 30-40litres. Otherwise you could be a long way out. 10L/100km would be expected, but short trip are very heavy on fuel. |

Is this city driving or highway driving? I easily get 600+km before the warning light comes on for highway driving, but for city driving, I get about 420km before the warning light comes on, and it was doing worse than this before I changed the spark plugs and cleaned the MAF sensor. If your stats is for city driving, that sounds incredible. |

keith, I've never been able to get 10L/100km out of my IS200, the consumption in the IS200 is as bad as my STi if not worse. yeah I understand the gauges aren't accurate however would it really change over time? I remember when the car was new it was getting 150-160km by the 1/4 mark. I'll do some trial and error the next few weeks. if not might pop by a mates and run a diagnostics scan. worst case senario, replace all spark plugs and lambda sensors. but yeah parents rarely do long trips in the car anymore. its just drive to the shops and back not long enough for the car to even warm up some times. |

Bit of both but more so highway driving. Early morning bumper to bumper congestion, giving it a bit and in the afternoons clear highways. I have after market extractors and y-pipe though, which I think affects the fuel economy abit so when I got over 500km a tank I was over the moon  Wez, I don't think it'd be your gasket leaking, if you were having heaps of black smoke then that could've been the gasket leaking oil. White smoke on cold mornings seems normal. |

It would be interesting to check the exhaust on an independent O2 meter. I wonder if your oxy sensor is dying and its running too rich. Trips around town that don't warm it up ard the worst thing for a car- a run in the countryside each weekend is needed! Seeing I haven't fixed Greeneyes Dijo took the Pintara up to get Ashara from Uni, that's up in Armidale. It used a notable amount of oil on the trip up, less on the trip back and hardly any going up and down at the end of the holidays. That's after months and months of 5km trips only. |

Our auto 1g-fe gets about 8litres / 100km on open road and about 12.5 litres / 100km if all driving is around town - all trips udner 8km ish to work etc. and also some hill stuff as Dunedin isn't very flat !! Not sure if this is excessive or not ? |

Makes me feel better as I thought it was just our 6 cylinder that was thirsty around town !! Our petrol light comes on at about 400kmish every time and takes about 51 litres to fill. Tried mobil 95, shell 95, bp 95 from pak'n save and bp ultimate and not noticed a big difference at all. Did a trip to chch and back and was glad to see it is much better on fuel on the long runs. |

That's a start, but if there was a recognisable problem it should throw up an error light. I'd get it on a dyno or find an emissions tester and see how rich its running when driving normally. Some sensor might be a bit crook & making it run permanently rich on choke. The water temperature sensor would be one, if it believes its cold all the time as chukatsung says. The O2 sensors in the exhaust might be saying its running lean so the ECU compensates. If the external temperature probe says its really cold air going in I assume it would run rich too, or the air mass sensor says there is more air going in than there is. That would tell you the overall picture, then you'd have to check each sensor. |

O2 sensors in the exhaust the air mass sensor I got nearly the same problem with Wez....1/2 tank around 220km (CBD)....could anyone show me exactly where is the sensors in the exhaust and the air mass sensor... Pictures will be great help....many thanks Wez - did you do the service of cleaning the fuel injection as it part of making poor fuel consumption. |

i don't think my injectors have been cleaned in a long time, + my oil sump has a slight dent (been thinking of replacing it) would that effect anything? mum drove off the other day and I could see a slight white smoke from the exhaust, I did some research and found that it could be coolant? fuel consumption at the moment is still pretty poor. |
