Hey all, my car is idiling weird like it sounds like its running on three cylinder and sounds like a subaru but its not, i noticed there oil comming out of the pod filter after iv been for a boost, so i cleaned it up and took the pod off, i also undone the 90 degree silicon pipe off the throttle body and found a shit load of oil in there as well, so i cleaned that up, 1st i thought the oil was coming from the breather at top of the head, but i don't think it is, i started it up and it seems to idill alot better with the factory airbox attached gave it a rev and there shit load of oil blowing up out of the intercooler and hitting the bonnet, hmmm, now is this a damged piston ring or have i blown an oil seal in the turbo or is my oil pressure to much for the turbo? any advise would be much appreciated cheers

oil blowing up out of the intercooler

I've never worked on turbos, but if there is oil between the turbo and the intercooler it can't come from inside the motor, so rings are not the problem.

I'd say the oil seal on that side of the turbo is damaged. As far as I know all turbos run on stock oil pressure, so the seals will be designed for that.

The killer for the seals is the heat from the exhaust side travelling along the wheel shaft when you turn the motor off. If you have a red-hot exhaust wheel and you turn the motor off that heat will cook the oil in the center to a tar or hard carbon layer, and ruin the rubber seals.

A turbo timer should always be used to cool it off.

Hey yeah cheers for that green eyes, i have an apexi turbo timer installed, im running a vf 8 turbo, the guy i brought it off never ran the water lines to it so maybe i should hook all that up maybe that would help with the heat and ill cheak the seals in the turbo cheers for that.

if it was a watercooled turbo that had no water cooling I would imagine it is stuffed. Oil seals would be dead.

Most turbos will need an oil restrictor in the feed line though, full engine oil pressure is way too much. I have a restrictor (which came with the turbo) that has maybe a 1mm hole in it (maybe less). Without the restrictor it will simply push oil past the seals.

Hmmm cheers for that yojimbo, yup my turbo setup has a 1mm restrictor, i cant figure it out ae, iv taken my oulet pipe off, started it up revved it up while my hand was under the outlet and there was no sign of oil on my hand what so ever, there's no smoke or anything blowing out of the exhaust or engine bay, i seem to think that all of that oil must of came out of the breather hose at top of head, turbo must of sucked it up, spat it out threw the intercooler and into the throttle body! is that possible, also iv notice little bits of white oil comming out of the breather hose, iv never seen that there before and my engine is lacking power, is the head gasket blown on it, im thinking of just putting it back to N/A and see how that goes, if its stil not running right im pulling it out and start it all over again, cheers all for your time

Ok, if it is breathing heavily. Then it could be broken ringlands, pressurizing the sump and pushing oil out your breather. I hate to say it but this was the likely kind of damage that would result from your experiments so far.

Disconnect your breather and see if that is the source of your inlet oil problem. If there is a lot coming from there then you need to do a compression test and full leakdown test. This will tell you 80% if you have broken a piston.
