So gutted today. My car made some tapping noises after exiting the motorway in Albany today, pulled over nearest parking, me and my mate checked it out and the oil was empty. We walked around Albany to get some oil and filled my car up. After filling it up immediately went to my mechanic and got him to check it the tapping noise. He found the radiator was leaking and pretty much the engine is screwed because of overheating, the weird thing was the temp gauge did not indicate overheating.. Car still goes but there is a louse rattling sound if i accelerate more. Currently looking into another engine replacement. Trademe has one for 1.1k for the engine. What do you guys reckon?? Sell it or swap engine? Just another issue queuing up for me. |

swap it if u like your car any rattling noise is bad. i had the same sound when i was on the track with my intergra typeR. it was starting to overheat and i stupidly went for one more lap...then my car sounded like bolts stir fry in a wok... one of the shimmy surrounding the crank bent under heat. then sht flew everywhere and coz i was on the track going high speed it bent my conrod and puncture the block.... when it was taken apart i had pieces of metal everywhere..hence the rattling noise |

The problem with water temp gauges is that there needs to be water for them to work... I'd say swap engines, mostly due to the fact that you're not going to get much money for a car with a buggered engine, especially if it's making the noises you describe. On a positive note, you'll always be really on to it with checking your fluid levels in the future now :-) |

Jeremy's right- what usually happens is the temp goes up for as long as it takes for the water (under pressure) to be blown out to below the sensor. Then there's is nothing for it to read so it goes down. You have two minutes to see it up high... A big "overtemp" light is just as vital as a "no oil pressure' one! |
