A common topic .... Attached is an image of few of my spark plug. I took them out for the 1st time since I bought the car just to check what is happening inside. One of them (2nd Cyl from the back, 1GFE) have a white powder coating on it. All the rest are fine. See attached image. My analysis, that cyl is running lean, too much air too little fuel hence is heating up. Fix, I am going to get the injectors ultrasonically cleaned at Peps this this weekend. Any other suggestions why this might happen? ![]() Uploaded with ImageShack.us |

Could have been from something as simple as the plugs not tightened/sealing properly allowing air in. Did you get the injectors cleaned? Notice any difference? |

some engine cylinders just run allittle lean compared to other cylinders due to variables like inlet manifold design etc where more air can enter one cylinder than the others. the only way you would get them absolutley even between cylinders would be indvidual cylinder tuneing and you require things like a seperate throttle body per cylinder and a/m ecu etc. you might also just have a dirty fuel injector. they dont look like theyre running that lean tho anyway. a lean plug is white as [f**k] and usually have signs of overheating showing and noticably increased electrode gap. |

Very true Maccabro, for example the 3SGTE. Because of the inlet runners the 3rd cylinder runs significantly leaner then the others and in most cases this is always the first piston to melt when the GT4 guys over boost them. A design fault that would have been rectified when they removed the TVIS |

#3 is the last cylinder to get coolant, that isnt on the end of the block. (for 3s) #5 is last cylinder that isnt on the end, for 1GFE. Poorest natural cooling, so runs hotter so naturally prone to detonation before other cylinders. #3 went asplodey on my beams motor (cracked ringlands, massive detonation) Happens regardless of whether front or (left or right) side feed plenum. |

Have a look at TVIS. It was a early way of improving tourque down low by opening up the inlet runners with a buterfly valve. Very good idea in theory but caused alot of problems especially because it caused the third cylinder to run lean on 1st and 2nd gen 3S-GTE's. A rise in cylinder temp doesnt make it run leaner just more prone to pre detonation |

Yeah I got the injectors cleaned last week. I wasted my money really (and time!) The car has done 160,000km yet the injectors were very clean according to the guy that cleaned them. Before cleaning, they were all around the 49-50ml flow. After cleaning they were 50-51ml flow! I use better fuels all the time, always 98 octane. So I suppose that kept them clean. I am not worried about the plugs anymore. Been driving on them for 60,000km and that was all the white there is! Which nothing comparing to a bad lean burn. The car runs same as before, idle did not change, engine response did not change, they were already clean! BTW, Don't ever take them to Peps! very bad experience with them. On Saturday, they said they cant clean them because the 1gfe injectors have a plastic body. They were smart enough to tell me this after wasting half a day taking them out!! So I asked them to check the flow on number 5 injector but not clean it (the one I'm suspicious about). Came back home and called this guy: http://mrjmobileinjector.com.au/ He cleaned them for me on Monday, the car was dismantled for 2 days ![]() Anyways, he said that he cleaned all of them and and their flows were really good. Also number 5, the one i gave to Peps to check its flow, they broke it anyway   they broke the little filter in the inlet of the injector! So I had to buy another refurbished injector from him! He cleaned them for 132$ .. refurbished Injector was 88$ So I wasted 220$ on a useless exercise ... and there was no problem in the first place .... Not happy!! |

It is vey difficult to make any accurate diagnosis of plugs appearance when they are simply take out of a cold engine. For an accurate read youhave to shut the motor down hot (literally turn the ignition off) at the instant you want to investigate. ie, load the motor + revs at point of peak torque (this would be the most demanding region of the tune) and turn the key off - coast to a stop. Read plugs. Terribly inconvenient - but the only accurate way. |

The above is very true, the plug should be slightly tan unless the 1GFE is a leanish running engine? Since your at the 160,000km mark possibly have a look into your oxygen sensors, could be getting a bit old causing it to run slightly lean |

hemm .. I have recently checked if there are any error code from the ECU. There was nothing. No error to suggest the oxygen sensors resistance have changed. But I suppose this is not the most accurate way to check them. |
