I have owned an RS200 (L I think) for about a month now. It's really starting to &*$$ me off.
On the positive side it has awesome handling, an amazingly tractable engine and a good level of comfort. I mean what other car can change the colour of the LED in the drink holder? That is soooo important right?

On the negative side - the gearbox is crunchy as into 1st, 2nd and 3rd and the pedal under my right foot has a mind of it's own - both on go and stop. Now mabye this wouldn't be so bad were it an auto, but with so many gears it makes for some pretty shite gear changes.

So, perhaps one thing at a time - How does one gain control of the throttle?
I've tried cleaning the MAF snesor and to be fair it does perform better on accel, but still when I release the throttle the engine RPM doesn't drop until it is good and ready to do so.

ITBs... Individual throttle bodies.

Expensive but effective it seems, it suddenly revs up and down very quickly. Odd post about it on here somewhere.

You can fit the TRD lightweight flywheel & clutch which helps a little, but not very much as it is computer controlled in the semi-fly-by-wire system that opens your throttle for you.

Certainly painful compared to my Ke70 with twin SUs, a cam & lightened flywheel!

My gearbox is fine. Does your clutch disengage fully?? Somewhere around halfway and not close to the floor? How many Km on the car?

There is a few options into removing the fly by wire too. I been doing a bit of investigating but so far cant come up with an ecconomical solution.

Make sure you drive someon else's, or take a couple of car-yard ones for a drive and see if they are differen to yours. There might be something wrong in your one...

Sound like your car is well overdue for a decent service. Pop down to your local BNT & grab yourself 2L Redline MT-90 for the gear box & 1L 80w-140 (or 75w-90 GL5) for the diff. Also see how much 5L of Fuchs GT1 5w-30 is while you're there & grab a genuine oil filter from your local toyota dealer. If you're after a cheaper alternative then you could try Takumi 0w-30 which is my current best bang for buck oil in NZ.
If changing all the oil doesn't sort your issues then you've got a another problem like worn clutch or pucked synchros. Does double clutching stop the crunching?

Already done the MT-90 thing, no improvement.
Doesn't crunch when I doule the clutch, but then it doesn't crunch on down shift anyway. Doubling def make it smoother though.

mmm well the gearbox is definetly a notcy gearbox naturaly but if its a true crunch then I would be expecting your syncros are worn...

Downshifts are where you're putting the synchros at work the most, because it's trying to speed up the engine via the synchros.

Slowing the motor down for upshifts is much less work...

Have you looked into the possibility that your clutch is not disengaging all of the way?

Trying to adjust your clutch pedal slightly could be something to try first, much cheaper and quicker than stripping down a gearbox :)

Also, if the throttle is starting to get a mind of it's own, it can sometimes be caused by the motor packing up in the throttle body.

If you're in Auckland I've got one (well, two actually) here that you could try if need be.

Thank you for the offer. It is in being serviced (needs cam belt and water pump anyway) and I have asked specifically that they test drive it for the issues set out here. I'll see what they come back with and may get in touch if I'm still not happy.
