Cam Belt - Std Practise

The story so far.
Book the car in for cam belt and water pump. Price was given, then they call back and ask for more money to do tensioner and idlers.

My contention is that should have been included, it's akin to getting a service and them wanting more money for an oil and filter.

They advise that they don't as a matter of course replace idlers and tensioners. To my mind this appraoch is NUTS! and I told them so.

Sooo ok, maybe I am wrong, is there a standard practise in this matter? Is there a Toyota recommendation, service spec, guideline etc?

It's common to replace those things at the same time.
Perhaps it's more that you did not know about the items?

I say that because if you had known, you probably would not have been so shocked?...

Dunno..but thats how your post reads.
Get them done, no point having a new cam belt if all its gona do is flap around the cam's now is it?

Standard stuff.

It's pretty standard to at least price them even if they don't end up using them all. Having another $210+ added to your bill for parts would piss me off to. I wouldn't be using that mechanic again.
Pity you didn't see Nicks cambelt package thread before hand http://z4.invisionfree.com/lexusaltezzaclu...?showtopic=5486

Thank youfor the thought - I was quoted $350.00 for parts only, which I was more than happy with and I would normally do this work myself - I probably have more tools (and knowledge) than most workshops and have been doing all my own mechanical work on cars, motorbikes, jetskis, cranes etc for the last 35yrs. If you want it done properly there really is only one way to do that.
But unfortunately that won't maintain my mechanical warranty, having it serviced at a stealership will.

I know only too well that these parts exist. I know only too well that they should be replaced (given the pittance weighed against the potential failure), indeed, I did request at time of booking that they be replaced - though they contend otherwise.

THEY in their wisdom decided that they were optional and given that this is apparently their company policy (according to the person taking my booking) it would appear to me that they simply applied company policy when they heard cam belt instead of what I actually asked for.

Whilst I did sign a form when I dropped the car off that said replace cam belt I naturally assumed it included all necessary parts to complete that job (to a high standard of work as I feel I am entitled to when paying top dollar at a dealership that specialises in this brand) - just as I did sign for a 90k service and assumed (rightly so apparently) that it included oil and filter etc i.e. all parts to complete the job.

So no - the reason I was shocked was that they hadn't included for what I had reasonably considered to be necessary parts AND they had ignored my explicit instruction to replace these parts at the time of booking.

Working for a dealership also, Peugeot Cam-belt kits come with those bits in the set.
Sometimes mid-way through services we have to ring up the customers and advise if other parts or work is needed too.
I see your frustration because when doing a Cam-belt these days the tensioners and idlers are almost always included so should be included in the price given at the time of quotation.

$350 for a cambelt & water pump!? A genuine cambelt retails for $63 & water pump $145. Where did they get the extra $200 from? That would cover the tensioners & idler. I think they've cocked up or are getting tucked on their pricing by an aftermarket supplier.
Are you going to name this "stealership"? I obviously wasn't a Toyota dealership then.

Hmm, I did mislead you a touch there perhaps, my apologies.
When I said I was quoted $350.00 that was from another dealership's parts department when I had considered doing the job myself.

Yes a Toyota dealership and no I'm not planning to name them. I wasn't trying to stir up trouble. I would however take it further with them in the first instance if someone is able to confirm my question in my first post.

PM xnickx. He can find out what the Toyota policy is and if it varies from dealer to dealer. He will also be able to list the retail & wholesale part costs for you.

I did mine with a kit from Nick and I am sure you could do your own too. I wonder what the warranty is worth really, very little goes wrong with these cars.

There's no policy on changing cam belt bits. It's up to the individual service consultant & mechanic as to what they see fit to change/price.
I'd be bringing this up with the service manager if you haven't already. I'd expect more from a toyota dealer. I guess they can't all be service dealer of the year like us (5 years in a row no less).

Its common for workshops to charge retail on parts hence the extra $200. That's why you either supply the parts yourself and just pay labour or simply do the job yourself.
