Some forum content may be of a "mature" nature, and could include sex, drugs, and violence. It doesn't happen constantly, but neither is each and every single post always"child friendly". Okay. SO...........it has come to my attention that Dev and Nyssa were doing some things in the cbox that some members found unfit for anywhere but threads. I know i'm still new here, but I wish to make sure that there is a decision that should be made regarding cbox cybering and whether or not it should be allowed. Of course, Dinah, having full authority, as I understand, reserves the right to make a decision as leader. But I would like to put it to a vote.

I will state the question, but first I ask that each person responding lists VALID reasoning behind why they are for or against the stated question. In order to make a valid argument, statements such as "who cares?" or "eww, it's gross." does not comply with what I feel this thread needs to make an impact. Also, please do not double post if you can avoid it. Please state your position and vote. I feel it is the best way to deal with it all quickly and swiftly, without starting an argument thread with no clear target or focus, or focusing on people instead of the topic alone.

Therefore, I state the question clearly:

Should cybering be allowed in the cbox? Why or why not?

I believe it is okay to Cyber in the cbox.

My reasons surround the idea that when I joined the site, that I'm sure I read that the site contained mature content. to Quote, "Some forum content may be "mature" only, and could include sex, drugs, and violence. If any of that offends you - stay away."

If that is the case, everyone here, as members, would be aware that these types of actions could possibly occur here at anytime, that the "site" contains the content, not just the posts. Moreover, I would Imagine the cbox is a place for all of us who aren't otherwise engaged in posts or pm's. So, given the site content, and given that the cbox is part of the site, I still don't see why not. If the site content offends someone, you shouldn't be here.

If you disagree with my points and wish to address me directly, inbox me. please only vote and state your points.

I am forcing my opinion to be one way or the other, as generally I'm on the fence about whether or not it should be allowed.

I think it should be.

We are paying for the auto-refreshing cbox on a site that only a handful of people know about. Naturally, there should be a level of security in place. I read the backlogs of that encounter (as Nyssa's player is essentially my neighbour for the next month) and had heard about her freak-out as it happened.

I personally think Lacy was wrong in her argument to chastise those involved for a few reasons, but this is not the place to air my concerns over her actions. I see no issue with "cbox cybering" personally, and cannot truly even consider it "cybering." If we are to label the cbox to that term, what is there stopping us from labelling our threads as "cybering"? Clearly demonstrated in the logs, these were not the players participating in intercourse, but their characters - further demonstrated by Nyssa's actions after Lacy's arrival. Nyssa is a girl who, once on this site, rarely leaves character. That should further prove my point that it was, as I consider it, role playing by cbox.

What I don't understand is why Lacy reacted in such a manner. I believe her argument was "kids could see it," but to throw counter point to it, all it takes is a kid to register to the site to see much worse. And if they've found the cbox, they've found the site. And it isn't as though we are plastering the board with sexual graphics, we are using our minds to create those pictures, those paintings, and really - what kid wants to read, if they haven't read it already?

If we're going to ban sex in cbox, it would need to be enforced, which would mean a moderator available at night once Dinah and Draiton are asleep in Europe. We would also need to ban violence for the same reason as sex - kids could see it.

Which then begs the question - why have a cbox at all?

Granted, we use it to communicate "hey, posted," or "hey, there's a thread for people to view," etc. We also use it for mini rp sessions that let us explore our characters without having to wait for long replies. I think of these "sessions" as "tiny threads." It doesn't make what was said in thread any less true, or false, just because things were not "in thread." And just because things are not "in thread" does not automatically make these encounters "not canon."

I'm rambling, but long story short, I think it should be allowed, but will adhere to rules should they be against my opinion, as I am a suck up and don't wanna get banned. :P

I do not condone or appreciate cybering in the public box. I understand that it is an adult or mature themed site, but this goes back to my feelings that the cbox is something that a new person first sees. While we do NOT have a lot of visitors, much to the disappointment of some, it is still important to provide a welcoming environment.

Cybering falls into a line of harassment for me, because it alienates [in my opinion] everyone else who isn't involved. I don't know about the actual event that this post relates to, because I spend a lot of time away and at work. But really, I do not enjoy being forced* to see something like that just because I want to be able to use the cbox to communicate with other people.

* forced being used to relate to the fact that I shouldn't have to leave the site to get away from something like that.

*sigh* And so, it has come to this.

I think that we should be allowed to have unrestricted interaction in the Cbox.

Reason why: Without being redundant to the points already made above, I believe that the members of this site are mature enough to realize implied etiquettes for such things. Violence does happen all the time, and the obvious rule for that is not to impose on others who tell you not to. It's that simple.

The same applies for cybering, as we are calling it.

If this were to happen I think that it would have to meet some conditions:

-the Cbox should have been unresponsive for some time, or be isolated to two (or the number of people involved, I suppose) people.

-you should be willing to halt activity if someone shows up and actually is trying to hold a conversation, etc.

-you don't interrupt people in a conversation to start something like that.

I'm not saying that these should be rules - I'm saying that it's common sense, and if no one here has the common sense to deal with the issue appropriately, then we shouldn't bother doing it at all. There would be no point of voting to allow it if people are tactless and imbecilic about it.

It shouldn't be allowed.

Why? Because as Wern said, the cbox is what new people can see, what if someone reports the site for what happened in the cbox? I'm pretty sure we don't want this site closed down again. I do agree with Wern personally but as an site owner myself, the cbox is public and thus it should fit the hosting sites kid-friendly rules.

Not everyone likes to read the sex and such, it even upsets some of the members that stuff like that happens in the cbox. "Site" and Cbox aren't the same thing, as the site is the board of where people post and you can chose rather or not to view it, in the cbox you can't chose that option it is there for everyone to see and you can't chose not to view it. and even if it is in character it is still cybering in a way, as cyber basically means any sex between two or more people rather they are made up characters or real people.

The cbox is there to talk and interact with other people, it isn't there for role playing in or anything (yes i know i role play in it but not all the time) it is there to chat and make friends. There are times when there is a need to be out of character, if you stay in character all the time then it will get boring and most likely muse will be lost. but out of character talk is what suppose to happen in the cbox as it is a place to connect with other people without role playing with them.

Roz beat me to the punch. I was contemplating posting something about it yesterday, but felt a bit too tired after work to tackle such a difficult subject. I am not so sure I am awake to post about it now, but I guess I shouldn't postpone it any longer.

Please take note that I am not posting this as the admin, but as a player here who offers a personal opinion, if that can be separated at all.

Now... I am on the fence on this.

The cbox is pretty much the first thing people get to read here. As Wren said, it should be a welcoming environment - and not just to guests. And not everyone wants to read in the cbox about intercourse as the first thing they see when they come here. There is a difference (in my opinion) between glomping, hugging, kissing and fooling around a little and more graphic material. Threads can (and should) have a "mature" warning when that happens, but the cbox can't.

There may also be a certain, if perhaps small, risk when things get too graphic. The whole site could be taken down by Zetaboards the same way Proboards took away the old site, should anyone ever complain to them about some of the things going on here. I doubt any of our members would go so far over something they don't like, but... Some of us are still not even 18, and some may live with, or close to, parents or legal guardians. And the cbox is the one thing everyone can see when this site is displayed in a browser, even when you are not logged in and the mature topics can't be accessed. It takes one angry email to Zeta and we could be in a hell of a lot of trouble. The risk may be minimal, perhaps close to non-existent, but even a one-in-a-million chance can happen. Unlikely doesn't mean impossible.

Those are my main thoughts against doing it. But when it comes to banning it...

Banning it would run into practical problems, and not just of enforcing such a ban, but also in defining what actually should be banned. I suppose we could rule out posting about penetration, but other things may offend someone just as well, especially when written in some detail.

(As an aside: If sex and violence were banned would the cbox still have a use? Yes, I think so. Hours and hours go by here without anything problematic happening here and people just chatting and goofing around a bit and having fun.)

In the end I would not advocate a ban, but would think people should think a bit more about some of what they post. Personally I have no problem with violence or intimate moments in the cbox, as long as the intimacy doesn't go too far and and the violence isn't too realistically and detailed written. I just think people should use a little common sense. As long as it is good-natured fun I doubt there's a problem. But when in doubt I'd say people should err on the side of caution and ask themselves if something they are posting in the cbox will really be what they want someone to read who just calls up the site and comes across it completely unawares of what they might stumble upon (be they guest or forum member).

I think using a bit of common sense and being a little bit considerate should go a long way to avoid having any problem again, so I am not too much in favor of downright rules being instated for the cbox.

Okay. Before I provide constructive critism on this topic, I have to admit I kinda laughed when I noticed this post. And I don't mean to offend anyone by it.

So I can save myself time an energy, I have to agree with Dev, and Modrid. While at the same time I can agree with Rhea and Wren, being as it is the first thing people see. Though honestly. This is a mature board, and if they are under 18 and on this site (Say for me example, I'm only 16, soon 17) they know from the rules that this is the nature of the board. And I must admit it is rather nice to just do miniature rp's in the c-box. I'm guilty of doing them with others, though I had the common sense (As stated by Dev) to know when was the 'appropriate' time to do so.

Besides, Rhea, Dev, Aislin, and quite a few members know me from pretty much when the site opened up. And I've never personally had a problem with the mature content, as the fact that in real life 14 year olds are getting pregnant and stuff. So I don't know. Mature reading vs Mature real life. Not a big difference in my books so I'm not really bothered, though I guess I've always been more of a laid back kinda person.

And plus this is a place to 'escape' from every day reality if only for a short while. Rhea, not to point you out or anything, you said this exact thing yourself. Generally if you are escaping from the harsh reality, you are gonna want to be free to do things that you wanna do. Some members just like to RP mature content, and some don't. Its whatever fancies them, and as Dev said, use common sense and if someone is trying to open a conversation, stop. *shrugs* Again though, its just my two cents on this and again, I'm sorry if I step on anyone's toes.

Also the way above where I laughed, I also don't mean anything by it.. I just found it Ironic, as this was the same problem we had on old EOM and it got worked over there. Though I can't remember what the solution was.

This isn't a response to the topic, per se, as I've already given my two cents. It's a response to Zareb's last two/three sentences:

There wasn't really a solution on the old site. Mature activity was simply banned and the Cbox was PG-13 for a short while.
