Of course! Actually, probably because it saves them money. You don't get rich by spending all your money. |

There is some other reasons.. some that i dont' even quite get..but Rockwell Collins uses Linux/unix technology to help debug thier program code. They also use microslop. But my dad has never been impressed with microslop in the business setting, and Linux is still in its design/development stages, therefor making it difficult for practical home use, due to lack of application software. But if you look, there is a network of software programmers who are, as we speak, doing thier best to create, and distribute, free of charge, different application programs, including the GUI enviroment, to make Linux more desirable to home users and the computer illiterate. Just incase you wanted to know. |

Yep. But do you really think their motives are so altruistic. If people start preferring Linux to Microsoft, and they start becoming the big corporation, they'll start charging. Microsoft isn't evil, as I've stated before, just a corporation. The makers of Linux will do the same things. They're offering it free so that people will switch to it before they jack up the price. |

Linux is open source code, written by people around the world. Yes there are versions of Linux that you have to pay for.. but I really think that there would be a problem when I know people personally, and have also considered personally helping to code new application software for linux O/S. The entire idea of it is to take a bite out of uncle billy's wallet, and get people to all contribute to an O/S and application software that is free to the general public.. it is a work in progress. And it will remain free. |

It's doubtful it will remain free. Okay, fine, it's a group project. That's even worse. What happens if Microsoft goes down? Then Guy A makes a version and starts charging, because he wants to make money off his. Then Guy B does the same but makes it cheaper. Guy C makes a better one, charges more. See where I'm going with this? |

I'm on the fence with this one, I'd have to use it to know if it's worth the arguement. |

You really do have a very bleak view of the world dont' you???*did that just come out of MY mouth... odd  *I guess we will have to wait and see... but I really think that a bunch of people trying to make money on it would be anti-productive..flooding the market with mult. versions of one O/S is not a good marketing technique. any idiot would know that.and people who write application code are,, on average,, not idiots!!!! |
