I've got my brother's old car. It's a 1990 Olds Cutlass Ciera International. It keeps loseing power steering fluid, but dad has taken it to two mechanics and they can't find anything wrong with it. Any ideas? |

Short lesson to make this make sense> Your engine has a serpintine belt that turns the pulley on your power steering pump when you engine is running. The pump pushes the fluid through your steering rack and makes it possible for you to steer your car . The pump has 2 hoses attached to the steering rack- a pressure side and a return side . pressure take the fluid to the rack and the return takes it back to the pump. Some times the cap for the power steering pump can not seal up tight enough and you lose fluid while your driving and it's falling on the ground so you don't see where it is going like if it was leaking right onto the engine compartment. The other possibility is you have a leak on your high pressure hose going to your steering rack from the ps pump and it only leaks when you turn, this could be spraying onto the ground also and it would be hard to detect. GM has several service bullitens out that tell about this problem, usually you either replace the cap on your Power steering pump or the high pressure hose from the pump to the steering rack. On one occausion we actually had the return hose that was leaking not the pressure one. The steering rack can leak but the mechanic would have found that ( I hope) it's pretty easy to see that. hope that helps. to check the hose it takes 2 people, one to turn the wheel and one to watch for the leak, that doesn't always happen in a shop so the mechanic may have missed it. |
