We all know about spyware, but lots of us don't think anything about it till it's too late. So here are a few programs to help those of you useing Windows. :) (wich sadly is most of you)

First off is Mozilla Firefox. They just put out the first official version. It's fast, reliable, stable, and most sites that try to install spyware onto your system can't do it if you aren't useing IE. FIrefox also offers Tabbed browseing, eliminateing the hundred open windows on your screen. It can be found at http://www.mozilla.org

Secondly is email. You should already know not to open emails from people you don't know, and steer clear of suspicious attatchments. However most people still use the insecure and outdated Outlook program. There are two alternative programs I'll suggest here. The first is fairly bland to look at. It's Mozilla Thunderbird. Other than the pedestrian look, it's a great program. If you've used outlook you can use mozilla, it's easy to set up and blocks spyware attatchments as well as filters for junk email. it can be found at http://www.mozilla.org

The second program for email is a little flashier. It's called Incredimail. Like Thunderbird it's free. However there is a little ad window in the top right hand corner, it's not much of an annoyance, but if you want to get rid of it you can pay for it or dl a keygen. the program offers llots of cool background images and emoticons for your emails. It's fairly easy to use and is widely used from the people i've talked to at work. it can be found at http://www.incredimail.com If you are interested in that kind of thing it's a MS Certified Partner.

If you insist on continueing to use IE then I recommend useing the google toolbar. Not only does it offer the convenience of a google search anytime, it blocks almost all pop ups. it can be found at www.google.com

We all know Spybot as one of the most popular programs for riding your computer of spyware. Howeve rthey have added a new feature. Teatimer.exe
This program will allert you if a spyware program is trying to install it'self and will,, along with spybot's imunize feature, help keep this junk off your system. It can be found at http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

Now, as long as we are talkiing about protecting your computer, let's talk viri. I've used both Norton and Macafee and for a long time i thought i was satisfied (This is pre Linux for me, linus has very few worries of virus infections.) Until my system started acting strange. Norton was up to date and scanned showing no viruses at all. then, on a tip from Maximum PC, i uninstalled Norton and installed AntiVir. It found 15 virus infections. This program is efficient, and free. It can ve found at http://www.free-av.com/
