Act 1 Scene 1 Section 1 “How’s it going everyone? “You don’t know me just yet; so, let me take the liberty to introduce myself. “My name is Manabu Fujiwara, UWA World Champion. To be honest, I hate calling myself ‘the world champion’ all the time. It’s a bit crude don’t you think? But, since, I am representing UWA, I feel it’s only fair that I mention it now. “Anyway, you don’t want to hear about that right? “You want to hear my ‘story,’ because every wrestler has a story. Well, here it goes. “I guess you could I saw I was a little different than most. You see most wrestlers become fans of the sport at an early age. When I was younger, I wasn’t particularly a fan, well, for a couple of reasons. You see, back in Japan, my grandfather was a wrestler. They called him Kato Fujiwara, but trust me, his name doesn’t hold much weight over here in the U.S. Actually, it doesn’t hold much weight over in Japan either. My grandfather wasn’t a wrestling genius. In fact, most people would as he was pretty terrible. But, he was well liked in the locker room and backstage, so people always had a ‘jobber’ position open for him. “My dad is a wrestler as well. His name is Mongo Fuji. Unlike my gramps, dad was a decent wrestler; not great, but good. He gained a lot of success over in Japan, but, we moved to the U.S. when I was young. The U.S. offered a lot more work for my dad. “So, at a young age, I was familiar with wrestling, but it was what I wanted to do. Actually, I wanted to be a lawyer when I was small. That didn’t exactly happen. You see, I went to college at UCLA, full ride and all that jazz. I earned a Bachelors in Sociology and afterwards went to school to become a paralegal. At the age of 22, I was working with some of California’s best lawyers, locking criminals away. The money was excellent, and the people I was around really enjoyed my presence. “However, when I was transitioning between college and post-grad school, something happened. One of my buddies brought over some old Japanese wrestling tapes, you know, they kind you used to have to find at the flea market. Anyway, to my surprise, I really loved the stuff. And then, I got this crazy idea in my mind; ‘what if I was a wrestler?’ “I tried to suppress that idea for a long time, but, I couldn’t any longer. So, one day I sat my dad down for a talk. He was happy to say the least. “Well, the next step was to find a wrestling school. I eventually settled on a placed called New York-Japan Alliance, which is based in Japan. NYJA is a dojo style school, so, it was pretty intense to say the least. Most of you all would know about that. “I was trained by a man named Flex Johnson, my Sensei. Flex is in nine time champion and was an amazing teacher. He got me my first job after I graduated from NYJA. The company was called XDF. It was a nice gig, lots of exposure and lots of money. However, I was foolish. You see, Sensei Johnson worked there as well. I thought that I was better than him, so I betrayed him. We went through a series of battles, all of them culminating if an ‘I Quit/Loser leaves town’ match. I lost that match and was fired from XDF. “After I got fire, I guess I lost a little heart. I went back to my paralegal job and worked there for two years. It was humbling I suppose. But, out of nowhere, I got a package in the mail; this was about four months ago. It was a contract from UWA, a promotion I had never heard of. But, it didn’t really matter. I was being given a second chance, so, how could I let that opportunity pass me by? “I signed right away. “Now, it was a bit of a culture shock. XDF was large and toured all over the world —UWA is a bit smaller. Eventually, I adjusted. I’d like to say that I’ve done well in UWA. “It’s funny; I never planned on winning the UWA Championship; that thought never crossed my mind when I signed up. I signed with UWA to prove something, to prove something to myself. I wanted to prove to myself that I wasn’t some failure you know? So, I wrestled every match to the best of my ability. I even went on a bit of an undefeated streak. Also, I’ll be honest; there was much talent in UWA when I first joined up. The current champ, Neptune, was a hack. He was basically given the championship and he still couldn’t hold on to it. But, over the past couple of months, some new people have stepped in the doors. A couple of them are actually worthy of stepping the ring with the UWA World Champion. “Ha, my bad, I said I wouldn’t brag didn’t I? “But what can I say? I’m proud of myself and what I’ve accomplished. And right now, the sky is the limit for me.” … Section 2 Manabu hadn’t spoken to his Sensei in the past three years or so. It’s hard to mend burned bridges, especially in the business of professional wrestling. But, of the past couple of months, Manabu thought that it might be a good idea to call his former trainer. He has grown up a bit, and isn’t has rash like he had been just a few years ago. Manabu sat on his black leather couch with his iPhone in his hand. He scrolled through his contacts until he reached ‘Johnson.’ Flex Johnson changed phones like he changed underwear; he also wanted to latest gadget. However, he NEVER changed his number. Manabu sat staring at the number for a bit. Manabu Fujiwara: “I wonder if I’m doing the right thing here?” Manabu shook his head. Manabu Fujiwara: “Well, I know it’s the ‘right’ thing. But, is it the smart thing? That’s the real question.” Manabu stares at his phone for a bit longer. He then calls. … A few months ago, Flex Johnson had retired from wrestling. His younger brother had recently died, killed by a drunk driver. Flex thought wrestling would keep his mind off things, but, it didn’t. So, he thought it was best to just take a break. Flex would have been lost without his girlfriend, Mya Laynes. You see, Flex is a bit of a hothead; he is loud and arrogant. But, he kind of has a right to be, he is a nine time champion. Flex had had just stepped into his L.A. loft after playing a small pickup game of basketball. He sets his phone on his countertop while he heads over to the fridge for some water. Before he reaches the fridge, his phone begins to ring. Flex walks over and answers the phone. Flex Johnson: “Hello?” Manabu Fujiwara: “Sensei?” Flex is silent for a while. Flex Johnson: “Manabu?” The two are silent for a few moments. Manabu Fujiwara: “Sensei Johnson, I’m sure you were not expecting a call from me. “But, umm, I just wanted to say something sir. “In XDF, I was wrong. I was young, ignorant. I thought that I was better than you; I thought that youth trumped experience. “I realized that I never apologized to you for my actions. “So, man to man, I’m truly sorry for my actions.” Flex doesn’t respond right away, but, a smile comes over his face. Flex Johnson: “Manabu, I appreciate that holmes. It takes a strong man to admit that he was wrong. “But I’ll be honest; I forgave you a long time ago. I’ve been in this business a long time vato. I know there is a lot of pressure to make a name for yourself. And that pressure is doubled or tripled for you because come from a wrestling family.” Manabu smiles. Manabu Fujiwara: “Tha…thank you Sensei!” Flex laughs. Flex Johnson: “But from now on, just call my Flex. You are a world champion now, you are one of my peers.” Manabu Fujiwara: “How did you know about that?” Flex Johnson: “I get updates everyone once in a while about how you all are doing. “I got to say I’m proud of you holmes. It took me years get my first world championship belt. And in did it in just a few months. “By the way, how is UWA treating you?” Manabu Fujiwara: “Everything is alright. “Actually, UWA is participating in the large multi-promotional tournament in a few weeks, which I’ll be a part of.” Flex Johnson: “Really? “That’s good holmes. I’m sure you are going to kill it.” Manabu Fujiwara: “I’m going to try; there are 31 others to defeat.” Flex laughs a bit. Flex Johnson: “That’s a lot, quite a lot. But, don’t worry about the number holmes. The only thing you need to do is go out there and wrestle. I’ve seen you in the ring, whether you like it or not, it’s what you were born to do. Just go out there and show off your skills. I know you are a fighter, you are filled with that fighting spirit and you would love nothing more than to win. But, think of this tournament as a platform to showcase your skills. “Win or lose, it’s going to make you a better wrestler.” Manabu Fujiwara: “You’re right, I’ve never thought about that.” Flex looks down at his watch. Flex Johnson: “Snap, Mya is going to be getting off work soon. “Hey Manabu, you going to be busy later? I promised the old lady that I’d cook dinner for her. She just got off, but the L.A. traffic should hold her off long enough for me to whip something up.” Manabu Fujiwara: “I’ve got a date with the mrs. later as well. But, by 10 she will be watch Twilight or something, so I’ll be free. “Wait…did I hear you say L.A.!?” Flex Johnson: “Oh that’s right holmes, I didn’t get to tell you, I moved to L.A. last year. “It was all over the news and junk.” Manabu Fujiwara: “When you deal with law all the time, you try not to watch the news you know.” Flex Johnson: “No I feel ya.” Manabu Fujiwara: “Well, if you are in town we could meet up this week.” Flex Johnson: “Sure, we will set up a time.” Manabu Fujiwara: “Ok. “Well, again, thank you Flex.” Flex laughs. Flex Johnson: “Don’t mention it holmes. See you soon.” … Manabu sets the phone down on the couch. He stands up and stretches a bit. He begins to head upstairs to lay down for a bit. Section 3 Manabu was a quirky guy; however, he tended to do certain things before large match. Sometime when he felt the nervousness swelling in his stomach, he would go for a long drive. Tonight was one of those nights. After waking up from his nap, Manabu tried to watch a bit of TV to relax. The TV didn’t help one bit—if anything it made his nervousness worse. He saw a couple of commercials for the tournament. Manabu got off of his couch and grabbed his jacket and keys. He jumped into to his Land Rover and pulled out into the street. From there, he got on the freeway and began to cruse. He didn’t exactly know where he was going, but, he kept moving forward. Manabu sighed. Manabu Fujiwara: “I don’t know what all this nervousness is about. I main event UWA events all the time, wrestle in places like the Tokyo Dome. “So why is this particular match bothering me so much?” Manabu laughs a bit. Manabu Fujiwara: “Probably because it’s one of the biggest matches of my career. It’s crazy you know; people forget that I’ve only been in this business for a couple years at the most. Hell, I’ve only had a handle full of matches. And yet, I’m already a world champion and carrying a company on my back. That’s enough pressure to make anyone feel a bit stressed right?” Manabu shakes his head. Manabu Fujiwara: “But none of that really means anything in regards to this tournament. I mean, true, I’m the best UWA has to offer. To be honest, there isn’t too much competition there. But, I’ll be taking on some of the best wrestlers that the country has to offer in this ‘God of Wrestling’ tournament. “Or, at least that is what they tell me. “To be honest, I’ve never heard of any of these guys before in my life, especially my opponent, Aaron Joseph. “Man, that is such a generic moniker by the way. I don’t know, maybe the guy’s parents just threw together two names and wala!” Manabu laughs a bit. Manabu Fujiwara: “I kid, Mr. Joseph. Who am I to talk about people’s names right? I’ve got one of the most Japanese sounding names ever. “But, you know, there is one thing that I can talk about. That one thing is wrestling. You see Mr. Joseph; I was born into wrestling. My grandfather was a wrestler and my father was a wrestler. I’m the byproduct of all their hard work in the business. “But it’s funny, because I hated wrestling when I was younger. But look at me know, UWA champion!” Manabu sighs. Manabu Fujiwara: “I’ll let you in on something Aaron; UWA was the LAST place I thought I’d end up in. I thought I was destined to work for a huge company, tour the world you know. And, that destiny did come true. Right after I got out of wrestling school I was picked up by a large promotion. I was making the big bucks and working a light schedule to boot. I was living the life. “And in one quick second, it was all snatched away. I made some stupid decisions early on in my career Aaron. If it wasn’t for my inexperience and ignorance, I’d be known worldwide. There would have been a need for me to come to UWA, a cesspool of mediocre wrestlers! “Wait… I take that back. Although UWA isn’t the cream of the crop, it does have its perks. I mean, it wasn’t like a whole bunch of companies were banging on my door right?” Manabu shakes his head. Manabu Fujiwara: “Forgive me, I know my thoughts are a bit jumbled at the moment. But, I said all that the say this; UWA gave me a chance when I didn’t really deserve one. They took a chance on me, and I took a chance on them. And, all things considered, that chance has worked out pretty good for both parties involved. Think about it Aaron, UWA has given me a chance to showcase my skills. “And UWA has given me the opportunity to face you, indirectly of course. “Mr. Joseph, I pride myself on my skills. I’m not going to lie to you all right. I wasn’t the top wrestler in my school; I didn’t win every match. But you know what, I was pretty d*** good, and the staff saw a future champion in me. I saw that very champion inside myself when I first started to become interested in wrestling. “Aaron, wrestling is all about competition. So guess what sir, in our match, I’m going to provide you with the best competition in the world. I’m going to show you some things that you won’t be familiar with. I’m going to give you just a little taste of how we do things in Japan. I’m willing to bet that you have never encountered a style like it.” Manabu nods his head, as if something just clicked to him. Manabu Fujiwara: “You know, for the second time in my wrestling career, I’ll be coming into a match as an underdog. You’ve got the size advantage; that much is clear. And, in addition to size, you have got the advantage of surprise. I’ve checked, you can find all of my matches on the Internet. Yet, I can’t seem to find anything about you Mr. Joseph. If you wanted, you could break down each and every one of those matches, and I wouldn’t be able to do anything to stop it.” Manabu is silent for a moment. He then begins to laugh. Manabu Fujiwara: “I guess I better get used to playing the underdog role, at least for this tournament. You see Aaron; I’m not losing this match. I don’t care that I don’t know who you are. I don’t care that I can’t find any information about you. I don’t care if you are a giant. I know that my skills are far beyond most, which most likely includes you sir. And I’m going to prove that during our match, underdog or not! “You see, I’ve got a lot invested in this tournament Aaron. And to be honest, it’s not all about winning, although, that is what I want to do. This ‘God of Wrestling’ tournament is a chance for my to prove myself. It’s a chance for the wrestling world to a bright diamond in the rough. Who knows what could happen if I do well in this tournament. Maybe I’ll get snatched up by another company. Maybe I’ll go on to bigger and better pastures. “Who knows? “But, it all begins with this first match. It all hinges on me defeating you Aaron. So, that’s exactly what’s going to happen sir.” The camera lingers on Manabu for a bit. It then begins to fade out. END |
