I got the DS when it first came out, for my 13th birthday, and I kept very good care of it since, so, I thought it might be interesting to compare my initial experiences with both consoles

Nintendo DS - 2005

I have a fondness for handhelds, gaming whenever I can just seemed great to me, and I had some weird paternal relationship with my Game Boy Advance.

But then there was a new thing coming out, the one to end the Game Boy series, and, admittedly, I really, really wanted it

So I couldn't get it when it first game out, it'd have to wait until my birthday, and when my parents asked me what I wanted, I was always like, 'Should I ask for this DS? I mean, I have my Advance but.. It can play Advance games! Man, I wouldn't ever need another handheld console again!'

On my birthday, I had a Halloween party and everything, recieved my gifts and was over at my Great Aunt's having loads of fun, then one last present, the Nintendo DS, with Nintendogs and Spider-Man 2.. Oh, yeah.

Coming back from the party, it was about one in the morning, I'd entered my name, messed about on Pictochat, and fired up Spider-Man 2, I love me some Spider-Man 2, it was such a great night.

Waking up, I fired up Nintendogs, got myself a Miniature Shnauzer and marvelled at how cute it was being, and how you could interact with it and how cute it's widdle face was, I passed everyone the DS so everyone could see it was pretty much going to be worth it's money

Thus began an over five year partnership in RPGs, Puzzle games, Mario games, and Pokemon, until..

Nintendo 3DS - 2011

I have a fondness for handhelds, gaming whenever I can just seemed great to me, and I had some weird paternal relationship with my Nintendo DS.

But then there was this new thing coming out, the one to end the initial DS series, and, admittedly, I needed to get a new DS

So, I could get it when it was coming out, but I kept asking my parents, 'Is it worth it? I mean, I have my DS but.. It can play DS games too, and it's on it's way out anyways'

So on the launch night, I went and got it, lots of people there, but no one my age, which was bizarre, I bought the console, with Nintendogs, Samurai Warriors and Rayman.. Ah well.

Coming back from GAME at about one in the morning, I'd entered my UserName, messed about on Mii Maker and got genuinely surprised on how the 3D worked, I like to think the 'D' stands for 'Depth', as Samurai Warriors didn't pop out at me as much as allow me to see that distant things did really look distant.. I didn't sleep that well that night.

Waking up, I fired up the AR Cards, to see what the fuss was about, and I was genuinely taken on how great that was, all two minutes of it, so after that, I put on Nintendogs, got myself a Siberian Husky, and marvelled at how cute her widdle face was, and showed everyone that it's Nintendogs again.

Thus began a few days of wondering whether or not I should have even bothered
..
..
I love me some Rayman 2 3D though, so the moral of the story is, Nostalgia saves everything

Wow, that was a really interesting take on a comparison of your initial experiences, how everything was almost the same thing, but with words substituted throughout for a different system. Awesome.

I recently got the 3DS, can't see that much 3D but it's still a great console.

Well I've got 99 problems and this is 389 of them
Saturday, I had the opportunity to play a demo of Pilotwings Resort at a store- and I was extremely impressed.

The first thing I noticed was the the blue 3DS wasn't exactly blue... more of a teal, really. The second thing I noticed were the 3D effects. Like everyone else, I was expecting the image to 'pop' out, but instead it felt more like you could reach into the screen. It was almost like looking at a holographic card, but the image was much more crisp and clear. It was a really cool illusion. Presentation-wise, everything was perfect. The analogue stick circle pad was very comfortable, especially when compared to the PSP's, and the system size wasn't too bad whatsoever.

My one complaint is that the 3D effects... well, hurt. While playing, my eyes kept "fogging" up, and I occasionally saw "double" of the background scenery. I adjusted the slider until my eyes felt comfortable again, but I continued to experience double vision. Eventually, I was forced to turn off the effects completely just to enjoy the game. When my playtime was complete, I felt a bit dizzy and had a headache for about 30 minutes or so.

Needless to say, I wasn't expecting the 3DS to have this effect on me. I was aware that some people complained of headaches after playing the console, but I've been playing games of many types (and cameras) for years, so I figured I would adjust with relative ease. I've never had problems with normal console games giving me a headache, and I can watch 3D movies and television without a problem... but for some darn reason the 3DS hurt my head. And that sucked.

I asked around, and the overall consensus when it comes to getting used to the 3D seems to be:
A) You immediately adjust to the 3D.
or
B) You get used to them after playing for a couple of hours.
or
C) The 3D effects "aren't for you."

Hopefully, whenever I choose to purchase a 3DS, my eyes will be able to adjust to the 3D graphics after a bit more playtime. If not, then oh well, there are plenty of other reasons to enjoy the system. And as I'm concerned, graphics don't matter; 3D, like HD, is nice, but not necessary to enjoy a great game.

...But still, when a console's main gimmick is 3D gameplay, it'd be nice to be able to enjoy that gimmick without getting a migraine. :P

Nice comparison to see the differences. When I first got my DS, I got Mario Kart with it. Not too long after it came out, too. Then I dropped it for about the 10th time, and it finally gave in. Only the bottom screen worked which made me so miserable. Ten I got another one a long time after. I'm not sure how this relates to this. But I hope the games for the 3DS are good though.

I'm in ownership of the system itself as well, I at first am not able to see the 3D effect due to my left eye's 20/200 vision as compared to my right eye's 20/20 vision. (Don't ask why it's like that, the doctor said my left eye apparently is ovalish in depth compared to my right eye, caused a blurry image to get picked up by the retina in the back of my eye.)

So once this kid brought it to school thinking he was the best ever, I decided to take a look and all it seemed to me was a DS with better graphics and higher resolution, but no 3-D just a bit of a...I'm not sure how to put it. Afterwards I went home and decided to finally open my 3DS, after a day of being in the packaging.

I had no games, but I tested everything out with my old pair of glasses that I never use. I saw the "3-D" I expected things to pop out, but really only stuff seemed father in, as if you could stick your hand in the thing, other than that I wasn't that impressed. I truly thought Nintendo would do a bit better. Also, after 6pm the camera can't do well without true sunlight, same as the DSi's camera. So I couldn't play AR unless I had a light bulb with over 500 candlepower or something.

Overall, the only true reason I bought it was because of the line-up of games it holds. The launch titles are pretty depressing IMO... which is why I'm not in possession of any, but I have played Super Street Fighter 4 and PilotWings. Meh...Now Nintendo, I await Pikmin 3 and the New Paper Mario if you please...

One word. 3D-HENTAI. But it will only be worth it if the 3D is actually good. The launch line up sucks too but dead or alive and Links awakening look good IMO. Dead or alive is basicly softcore and Links awakening is my favorite zelda game. Aside from that I doubt the 3Ds has much going for it currently. Ill just wait a couple years and (hopefully) see all the good and original (Not re-make) games that are released for it.
