Generic, unoriginal "mordern" games are boring. Shamefully thats 90% of the market. Think about all the sequels that have come out lately? We don't want bad re-hashes of last years games. We don' want a new generic modern/sci-fi shooter with the same shitty mechanics. We don't want more boring number filled RPG's. Boring... I really have almost nothing to look forward to in the future when it comes to gaming because I don't see the medium getting any better. Seems like we reached the boiling point and are stuck in an endless loop of the same thing with rare exceptions. (movies) Oh new super cool 3D. I dont give a fuck. Motion control gimmicks are out, 3D gimmicks are in. Give me something that actually impresses me and something I didn't see coming years ago. /rant

What do you g*ys have to say?

Phailosophy, I TOTALLY AGREE! Donkey Kong Country Returns was nothing NEW, all it is is just a rehash of all the side-scrolling Donkey Kong games with fresh enemies (THAT SUCKED) and it was WAY EASIER.
However, MOTHER 3 was very good, along with New Super Mario Bros. Wii, but Sonic 4 was... errrrr... not the best... and all this crap from SEGA like 2007 that screams "WE'RE RIPPING OFF THE OLD ADVENTURE GAMES VERY BADLY!"

Lol, something tells me you haven't played those games. XD

But I digress, I have to agree but partially disagree. Games today do tend to recycle the exact same content of the big-name titles, but that's nothing new. In the times of the arcade to the 16-bit era, rip-offs were flying left and right. Bubsy the Bobcat, Space Fever, K.C. Munchkin... I could go on forever listing, but instead I'll just give you this link. I'd say 90% of the gaming market has always been filled with shovelware and rip-offs.

With that said, the difference between games today and games of yesteryear is:
1) Gaming is now a bigger market
2) There are more studios making games, and more ways to distribute them
3) AAA games generally take more money to make

And with those three key differences it creates an environment where companies want to stay in a safe-zone. Why be adventurous with games when people still seem to be buying generic FFS, half-baked platformers, etc.?

Take a look at this trailer, for example. The segment featuring the three-person team almost seems like a parody of all the western, big-name shooting games. It's so safe and generic that it's hilarious -and somewhat painful- to watch.

Another example this "safe-zone" at work is Nintendo's re-branding of "Epic Yarn" into a Kirby game. It's sad when a company is so frightened of loosing sales that they feel the need slap a face on the title and tweak it so it's nothing 'too' new.

Not all games today are like that, though. There are still some interesting, engineering titles out there: Minecraft, as one example, or Scribblenauts (shameless plug), as another. Then you have small-name games like Chibi-Robo, Fancy Pants Adventures, Super Meat Boy or Angry Birds bringing something fresh to the table.

The fourth and most immediately concerning difference between today's gaming market and the past ones is what I like to call 'nostalgia-itis.' It seems everyone and their dog making a nostalgic revival of a much-loved series. In my opinion, this isn't inherently a bad thing. NEW Super Mario Bros. Wii was a joy to play, and even games like Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts, Sonic 4 and DKCR which don't stay entirely true to form are still perfectly enjoyable. It WILL, however, become a bad thing if the market doesn't move on from this. I don't mind the so-called 're-hashing' of material for nostalgia's sake. I do, however, mind it if it becomes a crutch for developers to stop coming up with fresh ideas.

But anyway, I guess the point overall I'm trying to make is there are still enjoyable games out there, just as there were enjoyable games in the mountain of garbage during the years of early gaming.

I watched those videos way too many times...

@MVS, You nailed it exactly. It basically is a safe zone which developers tend to stay in. It also was a lot like this 10+ years ago with all the piles of crap that were released. But what saddens me is seeing all these generic games of a genre I didn't think would EVER become popular. (DoTa games) Also have you guys seen all the generic retro styles indie games that have come out lately? Sorta sickening....
Although one reason why I am now complaining about it because my specific tastes are just changing, possibly becoming more "varied" so to say. Not sure if that's a good thing or not.

EDIT: I should have TL;DR your post MVS. Sorry but most of those "small name" games you mentioned ARE NOT indie games at all. Angry birds is just a mediocre mainstream rip off of the old flash games that actually did something with the genre. Its also NOT made by an indie developer, its made by a bunch of greedy businessmen, just like those god awful facebook games. Jesus, just because that indie looking game is on the Iphone or facebook doesn't mean it innovated anything or was made for people to have fun. Go look at a good quality flash games website and see all the games that came before the shit like angry birds.

I knew you'd take the time to explain Angry Birds, because I disagreed that it was a good game, iPod games, lol what a joke...

Precisely why I keep disliking Apple even more...

Before I continue on with commenting on your post, I have to say that I wholeheartedly agree with your boring retro games observation (in spite of my mentioning of Super Meat Boy, which arguably falls under the category of "generic retro styled indie games"). I understand the nostalgic feelings indie developers have for challenging titles based on "the old days", but when fresh talent starts out by taking what once existed without putting any creative twist to it, then they are not in a good place. Be out there! Be original! Give your own spin on things! It's not like you have anything to waste, your odds of hitting the big-time with that game are slim to none. :P

As far as DoTA games go, I, too, am surprised it has become a huge genre. I would think that if you're making a real-time strategy game, you seriously would have to go out of your way to make it stand out. It's a shame that thought doesn't appear to be true.

I'm aware they aren't indie games, and I did not say they were. By "small-named", I mean that they were not a part of mainstream game releases or that came from a not-so-well-known development team. I mentioned those titles specifically because they were examples of innovation in various forms; namely, to art of game creation, distribution, or simply being innovative to their genres.

Chibi-Robo was made by Nintendo, but is still an extremely clever and original adventure game. Unfortunately, it fell into obscurity after its release, perhaps due to its lack of brand recognition, its limited advertising campaign, and its release late into the Gamecube's lifespan? Nevertheless, I feel it stands as one of the more original releases of recent console history, and there is certainly nothing quite like it.

Super Meat Boy was mentioned as it is a well-known example of a "promoted" Flash game. Though originally a smallish game featured on sites like Newgrounds, Microsoft commissioned a console version of Super Meat Boy... and the rest is history. I think it's fantastic the internet gives individuals or small groups the opportunity to showcase their work to the world, allowing the big-named companies to search for fresh and vivid talent.

Fancy Pants Adventures, whilst also originating as a Flash title, was mentioned for its fresh take on the platforming genre. The game is freakin' stylish, without becoming the scripted spectacles more recent 2D platformers have become.

Angry Birds, regardless of how you feel about it, is a dang solid (and entertaining, by the overall consensus) game for its price, making it quite popular. I mentioned it specifically because of its popularity, which makes it an innovator in the field of game distribution. As someone who is late to the whole "mobile media" fad, I couldn't mention a single mainstream game developed exclusively for iOS and related platforms... that is, until Angry Birds. The game is so well known, in fact, I believe it has helped popularise the idea that the iOS can be used as a gaming device. Digital distribution on multimedia devices might just become the new home console in the coming years.
...Ew, I can't believe I just typed that. I'm off to go clean my keyboard, now.

See, books are where I go when I get bored of video games or TV. If I want a deep meaningful piece of entertainment I read a book or novel. Reading just never gets old even if the same cliche' story is told again and again in my opinion. There are just so many good books out there you can always find something to entertain you or even something to learn from. I mean we all play games and such for mindless entertainment but whats the point if at the heart of it there is no wholesome value to it.

I like Apple and I think that Macintosh's are better then Windows.

How are modern games boring? It doesn't have to be original, as long as the gameplay is fun then its worth playing!
