Think of Me as Space Gandalf
|
Because of Nintendo's new E-Shop, I do not see any reason why the Game and Watch series could not continue. It had some REALLY fun little games that kept you entertained on long car trips, and EVERYONE wants to waste money on those! Nintendo seems to be bringing back some of the old games, so this might be a prime time to bring it back. However, if Nintendo does decide to make him a whole new game in cart format, I would expect a Paper Mario type game, with the same old G&W animations we love, but big, bright, and 3D worlds. The enemies might be hard to make, because I really have no idea what Mr. Game & Watch fights, if he DOES fight in his little handheld world! If that's hard to follow, then I did my job. Now in SSB4, in my opinon, no changes will really be made. He's a staple now, and whoever uses him, can REALLY use him. If anyone uses Mr. Game & Watch on Wi-Fi, you are SCREWED. So, naturally, because I think Nintendo is tracking our choices on Wi-Fi, (look at the Wii courses for Mario Kart 7 and you will see what I mean. EVERYONE chooses those) Mr. Game & Watch will stay. I don't think any changes will be made to the moveset, but it's not like I own any of the G&W handhelds. There may be some power or something of his that they might add. But for now, I have no idea. EDIT: I do mean new games for him in the E-Shop. Just using the same G&W formula. Edited by Mama Luigi, 11 Mar 2012, 03:29 AM.

I'm not too familiar with how the E-Shop works, but I could definitely see a series of Game & Watch minigames released for a super-cheap price. Sort of think of apps on the iOS; fun, pick-up-and-play, addicting, but very small games. I think something like that would really catch on on the 3DS, or even the Wii U's portable controller. |

I can definitely see potential in this idea. I think Mr. Game & Watch would actually be a perfect fit for a downloadable-exclusive series of his own. I think either of the options you described could work for him as well. Thinking about it now, I think Mr. Game & Watch could have some huge potential in terms of variety if he were to star in more games. The reason I say this is because Mr. Game & Watch is such an obscure and random character that I think he could probably have a series with almost any genre of video game in it, since he doesn't really have any obligation for a specific genre to be stuck in. This means he could go anywhere from puzzle game to platformer to minigames without many problems and I think it could work as a wacky little series, kind of like Wario's current role in his video games. That is a truly intriguing thought. At first, I was thinking "It would be so hard for Mr. Game & Watch to be in another game because of his 2D limitations and the fact that he couldn't possibly become 3D without looking completely ridiculous." I didn't even think of the Paper Mario graphical style of things, though. From that, I could see potential in even more kinds of games if Nintendo felt the need to utilize him! It is true that Mr. Game & Watch was a 2D character stuck in a 3D world when it comes to the Subspace Emissary, so there are tons of possibilities they could have if they also had Mr. Game & Watch stuck in a true 3D world (i.e. Paper Mario, like you said). Just add in some more Game & Watch personalities and Mr. Game & Watch could have a promising future! I think that would be all of the fun of it, though! Take Kid Icarus, for example. Kid Icarus as a series (since it was really only one game) lacked many enemies to utilize and what not, but they are making it work with Kid Icarus: Uprising by adding tons of new enemies. I think that could be a really fun part of a full-fledged 2D Mr. Game & Watch in a 3D world: They would be able to add all sorts of fun items, enemies, and allies to the game to make an incredibly more diverse Game & Watch world! I didn't even think about a puzzle game- that could actually be a really fitting niche for him. The puzzle games is a very broad genre, but I'm sure Nintendo could come up with something unique that takes advantage of his legacy. I think the enemy designs for a potential Mr. Game & Watch game could be really creative. In brawl, Mr. Game & Watch (I'm just going to call him Mr. G & W from now on, OK?) could change into various things. With that knowledge, perhaps other G & W characters can do the same? While I would probably prefer to keep NPCs fully coloured and animated simply to stress Mr. G & W's uniqueness, the concept of his enemies sharing his appearance (and powers) could be a fun to play with. |

I like to think of Mr. G&W as a blot of ink. Unlimited possibilities. A G&W puzzle game or RPG could utilize this very well, like when he wants to use a hammer, his partner becomes a hammer. Or when he uses something like, say, a thunderstorm, he could become the thundercloud. Funfunfun! I disagree with MvS, all the NPC's should be like Mr. G&W, since it has already been established that he lives in his own world with people like him.

Just because he was once established in a plain world with like-styled people, it doesn't mean it's best to keep him in that sort of environment. If that were true, Mario would still be fighting a giant ape by only jumping up a vertical construction site. Since Mr. Game & Watch has fallen out of the public consciousness, if he were to be revived, it's a prime-time to reimagine and update the series for today's audience. Could having NPCs looking like him work? Yeah, I'm sure it could. But, depending on the angle taken, it might not be best way to go. That, and there's only so many ways to design a similar-looking cartoon person consisting only of a flat silhouette. It'd be a tad weird to run around a world consisting of a bunch of look-alikes. Also, a Mr. Game & Watch RPG/2D platformer crossover would be fantastic! He's supposed to be morally ambiguous, correct? Oh, the possibilities... |

Wow, I never thought of that! How abouts a battle inside him of good vs. evil... and he can't talk! It would be, like, so cool to see how this would play out, since he really has no personality. Not characters that look similar to him. There are so many little different guys in that universe. And you mustn't forget, collections have been released of Game & Watch, so it's not like it's completely fell out of it's consciousness. But pretty much, yes. And I'm not saying I would really mind it if all the NPC's were not like Mr. Game & Watch, I just don't really think it would work if all the characters in the protagonist's world were not like the protagonist. IE, Paper Mario. Everyone's paper, like Mario. |

Yeah, if I were someone who had never heard of Mr. Game & Watch before, I think he would strike me as a puzzle game-style kind of character and he would probably be a natural fit for the genre. He could be classified as a character like Dr. Mario, with a potentially very unique puzzle gamestyle. I could definitely see him starring in some niche small 3DS or downloadable series of puzzle games. I think a Mr. Game & Watch RPG is just the kind of innovative thing that the Game & Watch series would need to make a glorious return. As is prevalent in Kid Icarus: Uprising, an old, seemingly-dead franchise felt no obligation to stick to its old platforming roots and went a completely different route. I think a Game & Watch RPG could be a fantastic way to bring the franchise into limelight again, while also showing that the Game & Watch series could definitely have a large diversity. At first you may think that a 2D world RPG wouldn't stand much of a chance in today's world, but then when you consider how amazing the Paper Mario series is, there are definitely a large amount of possibilities. I think tons of gamers would be attracted to a full-fledged, retail Game & Watch RPG because it would be something no one would expect and I'm sure it would be a very unique experience. If they really felt the need to keep loyalty to Game & Watch's roots, then perhaps this is true. But for the most part, I think the whole new-age audience they would have to appeal to may be turned off from just seeing tons of bland colors because now we all expect these beautiful colors in our video games. So, I think it's safe to say that the Paper Mario comparisons we keep making would be most accurate, in the way that Mr. Game & Watch will most likely be in a colorful environment. The only way they get around him just being thrown in a colorful environment would be if they had a really unique storyline, perhaps where their entire world is engulfed in black and white, and Mr. Game & Watch must go on an adventure to restore color to his world or something like that. There are a bunch of possibilities. In response to that, I would just like to share some tidbits I discovered about Mr. Game & Watch when I was researching him a bit for this topic earlier: Furthermore, it is explained that Mr. Game & Watch doesn't know the difference between good and evil, which is why Tabuu chose to duplicate him using shadow bugs in the Subspace Emissary. I think that these tidbits could lead to some interesting and developed plot points in perhaps a story-driven RPG, focused on Mr. Game & Watch's mental capacity and maybe some forgotten memories. Although, I'm probably asking for too much from a Nintendo franchise for a storyline. |

This needs to happen. Although are we talking a Paper Mario/Mario and Luigi style RPG (large emphasis on button pressing and correct timing) or a Final Fantasy/Dragon Quest/Earthbound style RPG? And I only brought up Earthbound because its the only example of a traditional RPG by Nintendo that I could think of. I don't want this to shift into a discussion about Ness and Lucas in SSB4 yet. |

Obviously the question was directed towards Luigi, but I personally would prefer to see an RPG in the vane of Paper Mario since they are so similar and Mr. Game & Watch would be a good fit for an action command-focused RPG in my opinion. I would love to see it happen. |
