Hello All: As required of my undergraduate program in the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies, Norfolk State University, under the supervision of Dr. Andrew T. Arroyo, I am conducting research as part of my senior thesis. Please consider participating in this research. The contents of this letter will serve to provide you with information about this project and what your involvement would entail if you choose to assist. The purpose of this research is to determine how mainstream America perceives the ascending African American woman. There is a lack of knowledge of how America perceives today’s African American women compared to how she was viewed centuries ago. For this research, my colleague’s response interview questions will be the focus. I am currently using the method of netnography to gather this information. Participation in this study is voluntary. It will involve three interview questions. You may decline to answer any of the interview questions. Further, you may decide to withdraw from this research at any time without negative consequences. All information you provide should be considered completely confidential. Your name will not appear in any thesis or report resulting from this research; however, quotations may be used with your permission. Data collected during this research will be retained for one year in a locked file. Only Dr. Arroyo and I will have access. There are no known or anticipated risks to you as a participant in this research. If you have questions regarding this research or would like additional information to assist you in reaching a decision about your participation in it, please contact me at (757) 926-6158 or by email at dgwhite@yahoo.com. You can also contact my instructor and advisor, Dr. Andrew T. Arroyo by email at atarroyo@nsu.edu. I would like to assure you that I have completed the required training on regulations and ethical guidelines and received a certificate of completion from the United States of Health and Human Services for Protection of Human Research Subjects. I very much look forward to speaking with you, and I thank you in anticipation of your assistance in this project. Yours sincerely, Darlene Goode-Borden C: Dr. Andrew T. Arroyo dgwhite004@yahoo.com QUESTIONS 1. In your opinion, how does she continue to fit this stereotype? 2. Why does mainstream America continue to lack positive images of the African Amercan woman today? 3. Has the roles of roles of African American women changed in comparison to decades ago? How? Edited by nsugrad10, Nov 10 2010, 08:43 PM.
