Yeah, I don't surf SW.com or TFN or places like that at all. I wouldn't have even known about this thread if the link hadn't gotten posted here, and in several ways I'm sorry that I took the bait and read it.

Some of my thoughts and opinions... will respond to others later...

Some generalities about the novel:

For one, it was just way too short, and it seemed like everything was rushed. I was expecting more from the conclusion of this series.
Also... I thought all those stupid jokes at the beginning of chapters was completely unnecessary. It took the tone of the book, which I had thought should be a LITTLE serious, down ten levels. Almost made a joke of the whole thing, in my opinion.
Another thing... this novel was completely different than the rest. I mean, in the way events were portrayed. The previous ones focused on all the characters, all sides of the war almost equally. Invincible, however, was almost completely one-sided with Jaina at the forefront. Not that I like Jacen or anything, but excluding his side of the story just helped with the predictability of this novel.
Yes, it's predictable. With all the jokes and the way the novel started out... someone would have to be completely out of it to NOT know that Sithy boy was gonna bite it. It was just almost like a series finale of a TV show, or just a finale when a character is killed off, where old events are shown and characters are all sad and remorseful... everyone "says good-bye," blah, blah, blah.
So yeah, despite my own personal hopes... I knew it was coming.

The events:

Ding, ding, the Sith boy is DEAD!!--
I feel a bit differently now having finished it, but I could help still thinking at the beginning that Jaina still wasn't ready to take him on. She said so herself many times.
But she still gets it done. Eventually. She even had to fight him once and cut off his arm before realizing that she wouldn't be ready until she completely let go of her brother and realized he was gone.
Even so... being ready, I still think Jaina defeated him too easily. Yes, he was distracted. Yes, he was half-maimed. But so was Jaina.

A slight deviation, with the first fight. I thought it was awesome how Luke was helping Jaina and making Jacen so frustrated. It was actually funny. Jacen was getting so freaking paranoid, hahahaha.... Which in the end, helped Jaina. Like Luke wanted it to be.

Even before it all started.. the discussion with the Masters...
I don't know, but I didn't buy Luke's reasoning that he couldn't go after Jacen because he was already "tainted" with the dark side. COME ON. He's LUKE FREAKING SKYWALKER. I think he can handle a little Sithboy. But, oh, well. Twin vs. twin is just so much more...dramatic. I guess. And.. I suppose Luke needs to learn to delegate.. sometime.
They even had to tell us a second time, as if the first time wasn't enough... Denning was trying to beat it into us so much that I almost thought Luke was deceiving us... and would actually use his distraction of Jaina to distract Jacen that Luke was coming, to really confuse Jacen. That's just how my mind works.

Luke--
Going on from the last point... With all that happens in this involving Luke, it makes me wonder.. what else is he hiding? What other powers? I mean... how powerful is he? Yeah, he's LUKE, so it's obvious he has more surprises...
It's just awesome. I mean, he knows shatterpoint. And obviously he was projecting himself so realistically in the first fight between Jacen and Jaina that Sithyboy thought he was more than just a vision.
Plus, there was all his other visions, his future visions... What exactly has he seen? Besides the part where he thinks he'll become Emperor of the galaxy if he defeats Jacen. Because it seemed to me like he's seen more... hmm...
And then he would go into those little.. "sleep" meditations... What is he doing? I don't think that is just when he was helping out Jaina, was it? Seems like it was a different time in the story.
Crazy theory: Perhaps it involves Mara. Yes, I know I have been saying this for a while, and it's more of a wish than anything, but I think it would have been cool if she was indirectly helping Luke help Jaina and the others.
Luke is just plain awesome... Seems there is nothing he doesn't know or can do. <3

Ben/Tahiri--
Just Ben... I think he's really coming into his own now... obviously. Letting himself get captured in order to save Jaina and Leia. Going back to be interrogated by Jacen, even though the possibility of dying was there. He's a mini Luke. *tear* I hope we get a lot more of Ben in subsequent novels.
The interrogation--umm... creepy! Seriously.
Anyway... at the end... I think Tahiri got off too easily. Yeah, she was brought to justice and all, and I know Ben was trying to do the moral thing, but...oh well. Hopefully the others will give her harsher treatment.

Zekk--
I have to honestly say... I don't care that he disappeared. I know, scandalous. I'm sure he'll show up sometime, randomly, when the plot devices call for it.
Plus... although she cares for him obviously, it seems Jaina is finally over him. YES.
Theory: Maybe Zekk left on purpose, knowing that Jaina could never be with him? Maybe he's not lost.

Alanna--
All right... something I have to say and others might not like it. Okay. I kind of thought she should have died. I mean... Jacen was gone and almost all trace of him was being wiped away, so I thought it would be rather poetic for Alanna to be gone as well. Kind of a necessary thing.
That said... I find it rather odd that in order to keep her SAFE, Tenel Ka sends her off to be with Han and Leia. 'Cause we all know those two stay out of trouble and live boring lives and have more security than Hapes. Right.
It'll be interesting to see how she grows up though, and whether they ever tell her about her father.

End events--
I almost laughed when I read that Boba couldn't return to Mandalore. Hahahahaha... so poetic and hilarious. He deserves it. Though, this might mean he'll be causing more trouble. Sigh.

Chief of State DAALA? WHAT THE HELL. Seriously.

And though it's weird and surprising.... Jag as Grand Admiral/President of the Remnant is kind of cool. I can just see him shoving that in the Ascendency's face and laughing.
Plus, how could Jaina resist THAT? Dude, I'd take that.
But we were missing the Jaina/Jag moment at the end.... I really wanted one. But, no, it was all oopsy, Alanna is still alive, haha. Why couldn't we have a couple more pages with Jag and Jaina? It's not as if the book was too long or something.
At least, to me, it seems that Jaina has made her decision... why else would she be glad that it was Jag who found her after she killed her brother and not Zekk?

Invincible--
So who is really invincible? Is it Jaina? I don't think so...
Luke? Maybe.. it would make sense.
The light side of the Force? Another possibility.
The Galactic Alliance? Well, it did survive the war and unite almost all the galaxy together (I don't think Daala's plan is going to be completely failsafe, though. The Chiss probably won't be happy, plus there's always spoilers. War will come back eventually), but I don't think it's the GA either.

The series as a whole... while some of it was enjoyable, I didn't find it to be a prime example of what EU authors could do. A lot of it was contrived to me, just a means to the end. What that end is, is hard to say. Maybe they needed a reason to unite everyone. Or a reason to kill Jacen. Or a reason to show more about Luke. I dunno.
Legacy of the Force gets 3/5 stars.

Couldn't they JUST ONCE go for a happy ending?

I didn't find anything about the ending to be anti-happy, actually.
They couldn't have let Jacen live; he was too far gone.

As for Jaina redeeming him... at the end, I think she almost wanted to, but she realized that the Jacen she knew was long gone.

I wouldn't completely dismiss Jaina, though. She did feel regret at the end about whether she could have saved Alanna (which wasn't necessary).

Maybe it's because I'm not as attached to Jacen, but I found the ending completely reasonable.
Vader sacrificed himself to the Emperor to save his son, thus redeeming himself and revealing the good he had.

Jacen didn't do anything remotely good at the end. Wanting to save Alanna was just a selfish notion on his part. He didn't make any sacrifices for the good of the light side, unless you count him sacrificing himself. Which he did, trying to save Alanna.
So maybe he was redeemed. After he died.

If you can see through my twisted logic...

See, I liked those little snippets of jokes and stuff. I teared up whenever I read one, but then I'm a die-hard Jacen fan so that pretty much explains that reaction right there. There were just so little continuity though, if you think about it. In Dark Journey Tenel Ka was talking to Zekk about Jaina's slide, and she specifically said she'd do anything to bring Jacen back if he was sliding. But she didn't do anything. And then there's Zekk himself, what's Jaina gonna do without her loyal wookie-sized partner? They knew eachother so well, in my mind they were made for eachother but instead he pulled a Lowie and disappeared who knows where. Why do the authors like to do that with the YJK characters? TK and Zekk had very little page-time in the NJO and TK all but disappeared until the DN...Then Lowie made a small appearance in Betrayal but didn't show his lovably furry face again, even when Jacen burned Kashyyk. There is a serious lack of continuity in the Star Wars books, but we all keep reading no matter how annoyed we get. We're hopeless. :snark
Any guesses as to who inspired this name? Huh? Anyone? *Grins*
I say they should have a Solo grin smiley out there, I can never find one. Scratch that I found one here. Heh, heh...

Yeah, I agree...

Taking all nine books together, Invincible didn't really seem to belong.

Maybe with Jacen, Tenel Ka realized she was wrong way back when and now that she's older and a ruler of Hapes, it would be better to just take him down. Perhaps she didn't realize the scope of what she was saying and how dark someone, like Jacen, might get.

I'm sure they'll find Zekk sometime in the future.

And talking about disappearing characters--R2-D2. I mean, he was a major character in all the novels up till Legacy of the Force. He's barely ever mentioned. Seriously.

So, I finally got around to reading the last book of this series. Go figure the one book that I don't pick up the day it comes out, and wait weeks to actually read it from the library, is the one book that is actually the best in the whole series.

Now, that's not really saying much given the overall quality of the series in general, but this was by far the most enjoyable to read. It was also the only one that didn't make me angry while reading. (Except for the parts where they brought in Stover's shatterpoint stuff for absolutely no reason. Jaina and Jacen didn't even use that skill for any purpose in the final showdown, nor did it play any other role in the entire story. A pointless, idiotic call-out to a much superior novel. I'm confused as to why they mentioned it at all. Regardless...)

My very own lovely Mirax summed it up perfectly months ago in this very thread:

Quote:

I dunno, just because a book is long doesn't mean it's good.

Maybe it just means this one won't have a bunch of useless fluff... coughmandoscough.

There was by far less fluffy bullshit going on, and it was all business. Get in, end the series, get out. I appreciated that, especially considering how the NJO "ended."

Unlike most of the other folks around here, I don't have any attachment to pretty much any of these characters, so I don't have any major issues with what went down. Some thoughts, though:

JACEN
====
Kind of a waste of a perfectly good character, but whatever. Just when he stopped being a total fucking pansy, and actually started doing something interesting, he gets written off. Buh-bye, Biscuit! Any other ending of this series would have been retarded, I think, though. Of course, when the whole series is retarded, that's pretty much a given.

JAINA
====
Why does *she* have to be the last remaining Solo child? She sucks. A whiny emo twat who needs to get drilled something hardcore. She should have just picked between Jag and Zekk based on who could give her the best bedroom pounding.

ZEKK
====
If he comes back as a bad guy in a later book, that will be totally retarded. They should have just killed him and off and been done with it. No rational reason for him to be in limbo.

JEDI COUNCIL
===========
Why couldn't they have given the green light to butcher Jacen earlier? So they could sell 9 books! Wooooo!

BEN
===
Almost guaranteed to be the basis for most of the future books. Meh.

ALLANA/AMELIA
===========
Cool that she's still alive, I suppose. At least now that she's chilling with Han and Leia, she'll actually get to do stuff in other books, instead of just being a footnote like Tenel Ka is going to be.

TENEL KA
======
Pretty much goodbye to you forever, now that your kid got adopted.

JAG
===
Still a tool.

DAALA
=====
Where the fuck did she come from? Who the hell is it over at the Lucas compound that has a hard-on for this bitch? They keep bringing her back for no apparent reason, and now she's magically the Chief of State? What the fuck?

HAN/LEIA
=======
Apparently the stars of the next book that takes place *after* this series? How old are they again....? Jesus... Pretty soon we'll have stuff like, Han Solo and the Unruly Colostomy Bag, or Leia's Adventures in the Land of Menopause. Christ...

BOBA
====
Him and his retarded mandos were still *too* prevalent in this book, though not nearly as egregious as prior entries. I suppose his presence is to be expected considering the direction they took this retarded series in. Luke can't kill Jacen, but Boba can teach Jaina the necessary skills...? Bitch, please. It's funny that Boba and his spawnling can't ever go back to Mandalore. Sucker. Here's to hoping that that fact alone prevents Traviss from writing any future books with him there. [nelson]Haw haw![/nelson]

TENEL KA COMMANDO COUSINS
======================
For me, these were the best characters in the whole book, despite they only come in towards the end, and they don't even do that much. They were the only new characters in the whole LotF series that I can remember being remotely interesting or enjoyable. Shame they couldn't have been introduced earlier. Of course, if they had, they'd either be dead or banging Boba Fett, so I guess that's for the best.

========================

So, yeah, I pretty much vowed that this would be the last Star Wars book I'd ever read (except those written by Stover), and considering I haven't picked up any of the other non-Legacy books lately, I don't see that changing any time soon. I only finished this series out because I hate leaving things unfinished. I like to have closure. None of the new Star Wars books I've heard about sound remotely interesting, and I have lost all faith in Del Rey and the LucasBooks people in providing quality material to the masses, instead of glorified, professionally produced fanfiction. If I wanted to read fan fiction, I'd do that on the internet for free. I don't need to spend $8 or $20 for it to be printed out.

The fortuitous thing is that once I sell all the janky SW books that I'll never read again, I'll have *significantly* more room on my bookshelf! Huzzah!

In short, I suppose, Invincible was a bright end to a long train of poop.

What the hell is that title supposed to mean anyway? Who the hell is invincible? It certainly isn't the quality of the EU novels.

ZING!

Mang, it seems like most people here hate the SW novels now. Time to ask for used books...

Ahaha, only in the northwest area. Postage is pricey. I'm better off perusing thrift stores but it doesn't hurt to ask if anyone has audiobook versions of NJO...

Yeah, I think the "invincible" part is kind of left out in the open, there.

My only thought is that perhaps it's the light side of the Force or Luke or something.

I finally finished this series and knew if I checked back here there would be people that agreed with me.

Killing Jacen was a huge waste of a perfectly good character and pretty much left the Solo's with a whiny bitch of a daughter (sorry I used to like Jaina). Maybe this is why Tenel Ka gave them Allana. Since their real daughter is such a disappointing non-entity now and they need a chance to try again after already failing with three children, btw. Barrrrrrf.

I just find myself not excited for Star Wars novels anymore.
