So... after reading "Death Star" by Reaves, I wasn't sure about this new series. But was willing to give it a try. Anyone else reading 'em? About a month ago now (Haha, I'm so slow), I finished the first one, "Jedi Twilight." It was a good read, better than I was expecting. I don't know about anyone else, but I found the imagery Reaves used of the Force as being like threads really interesting. A different view of how everything is connected. I did get slightly confused about why Jax was loosing his connection every so often. Yeah, it was explained later but I'm not sure I buy it... Also... maybe it was just me but when Jax and Nick were together, Jax didn't quite seem so mighty or outgoing. Almost like he was submitting to the alpha dog kind of thing. But when it was just Jax defending himself, he was all big powerful Jedi. *shrug* Maybe it was just out of respect for his friend or he just didn't have the same opportunities as when he was without Nick. I don't know how many of you have read any of the Dune books, but I felt that the scene with the feral droids taking over part of the underground was reminiscent of the Jihad in the Dune universe, where those droids/machines began to take over human characteristics, the humans later defeated them and made a pact to never make machines with human thought again. I just felt a lot of similarities. And again later with I-Five. (And perhaps also with Artoo and Threepio slightly). The ending, though, was a bit cheesy, with all the characters ending up together... almost like a fairy tale. Same thing with the holocron, which was too much of a coincidence for me. And Nick's "death." I think it would have better if he had been sacrificed... I guess. I know he's one of the main characters, but he is starting to feel a bit infallible to me. Wondering if anything is impossible for him. But overall.... it was good. I enjoyed it. And I want to get to the second one. |

I saw book II at Borders. I took a double take at the Twi'lek chick. Moody for a Star Wars cover! |

I think most Twi'leks are moody, though. :p But yeah, I guess these books are supposed to be "darker" and such. I didn't really see it, though. |

I got the first book about a month ago, but as I'm trying to read about five books at once (including Lisey's Story), I'm not very far into the book. But I like it so far. Anything as far removed from LOTF as possible seems nice right about now. |

Well, I finally finished the second one: And, well.... I thought the first one was better. There were just too many coincidences in this one for me to take some of it seriously. And, yes, I realize that some storylines need to intercept eventually for there to be interest and drama, but in this novel, it seemed EVERYONE was connected to EVERYONE ELSE. I mean, seriously. There's, like, ten characters, out of gazillions on Coruscant and they all happen to be connected in some way? Give me a break. Also what happened to Nick? If I remember right, he survived at the end of the first, right? Am I forgetting something? Did he go home to Haruun Kal? It just seems lame to introduce his character, one that I found interesting (even though he make Jax feel kind of weak in the first novel) and then he just disappears for the next one. And, like, suddenly Jax has no problems with his Force connection? Why bring it up in the first novel, then? Dramatic irony? Blah. However, I wasn't a big fan of the Typho/Padme storyline. All seemed very gratuitous to me. Like, the author needed to add in more random characters. And how he just "happened" to run into Aurra Sing and just "happened" to be looking for the same man/Jedi she was. The murdered artist one was a little better. Not great, not wholly interesting, but, hey, the characters had to have something to while waiting for Vader to find them, right? Seriously... I found myself rolling my eyes sometimes while reading this and how ridiculous things were sounding. Hopefully the next one is better. And, maybe it was just me, but I found the timeline of events a bit confusing. I mean, when exactly does this novel take place? I assumed it was just a year or so after Order 66/Episode III. But then some of the characters references events like the Clone Wars and the Trade Fed. embargo as being 15-20 years ago. Just seems like too much time to me, but maybe my math is wrong. |
