I think running commentary might be good -- cause discussing one book while you're reading another and then going back and discussing the second book while you're reading a third might get all googly moogly crazy and stuff. XD

Yes we shall! Do you guys think it would work better to have the month like dedicated to reading and then the second month we would be reading the next book but also discussing book number one, or just have the entire month dedicated to a sort of running commentary of where we are/what's going on, etc?
Hmm.... I actually think I like the first suggestion.

But either are fine.

I just need to find time to read this one, with all my other books I need to read.

I like the first one. If we discuss the book as we are reading it, theres the potential for spoilers and things like that. I think we would be able to have a more open discussion if we waited.

So the New Year has begun! What are we reading first?
When his life was ruined, his family killed, his farm destroyed, Job knelt down on the ground and yelled up to the heavens, "Why god? Why me?" and the thundering voice of God answered, "There's just something about you that pisses me off." - Stephen King

Ok, first one it is then since it looks like more people are leaning that way. If it doesn't work, we can try a different way!

Start reading Prey by Michael Crichton, people! Yay!

Actually I just finished it. I actually ended up reading the entire thing in one day because I couldn't put it down! But there's no crazy deadline or anything. If you finish later you can still totally spazz about it and stuff!

Well, I've read it before, so it should be fine. :p

You all can just discuss your general thoughts or something until I find a good question.

Whenever you guys are ready, we can discuss, starting with:

Your overall thoughts/impressions/opinions of the novel.

We'll start there and move on from there.

Awesome! So everyone, at this point, can go ahead and start on Rhapsody, by Elizabeth Haydon, which is next on our snazzy list while we discuss this!

My overall thoughts on the novel? Basically, that Michael Crichton is AWESOME! I think the reason he was such a fantastic writer is because you can tell he researched the hell out of whatever subject he was writing about. Not only does he write fabu suspense stuff, but it feels like it could totally happen! And it's scaaaaary! But cool! And I loved how much you had to work to figure everything out in this book and how it was going to end! I loved it!

That's one of the reasons I love his novels so much, too. He just doesn't make stuff up, and you can tell by the uber-long bibliography at the back that he does base everything on actual research and theories.

His novels like this are what I like to call true science fiction. It doesn't always have to be about aliens/sci-fi. As long as it involves science in some way, I call it science fiction. [This is how I distinguish between science fiction and sci-fi. They may seem the same, but to me, not. :p]

I also love how he makes you feel that whatever happens in the novels, could actually happen in our real life. Which is probably why I sometimes think that some of his novels are a caution against the things that happen in his novels. Yeah, little cameras are cool, but what happens when they're abused? (Dinosaurs are cool, too, but for how long?).

This was my second time reading through it, and though I remembered a few bits here and there, it still kept me on my toes while I was reading it.
It's probably one of my top 3 or 5 favorite of his.

Sorry, midterms ate me. Ok!

I totally agree, though! What makes his books so powerful and scary isn't the suspense or the mystery, its the fact that it always totally seems like it could happen. The fact that he put so much research into them always makes it seem like he really cared about what he was writing instead of just churning out thrillers for the heck of it, you know?

Yeah, exactly.

It's the same with films; I much prefer psychological or other sorts of thinking thrillers, instead of slasher films made by the dozens.

Yeah, I like a good horror novel once in a while, but if it's so over-the-top, I can't believe in it, then that is all it is. Fun. Diverting.

But which Prey and Crichton's novels (most of them anyway), I love how you sit there wondering, "Is this going to happen in my lifetime? Is our government experimenting with nanotechnology?"

[PS: Got Rhapsody and will be starting soon, after I finish the book I am on now. Plus, just noticed this one is part of a series, lol.]
