[ closed to Fontaine and Tenenbaum ] Shifting uncomfortably, Tenenbaum did all she could to hide a scowl at the dress and heels she had on that particular night. It was a nice dress in a pale gray shade and it was pretty much one of the only dresses she owned. She knew she couldn't wear her ratty old work jumpsuit to dinner -- especially at a place like the Kashmir Restaruant -- but just the thought of the worn fabric and the baggy pockets for all her tools and notes made her sigh. The only place she ever really felt right in was her laboratory. She was sure Dr. Suchong felt that way as well. Which is probably the main reason why the little rat was late for dinner. He seemed to be late for a good many things. Tenenbaum figured he would be late for his own funeral when the time came, sooner or later. Smiling politely across to Fontaine, she opened her mouth to start some idle chit-chat when a waiter showed up to take their drink orders. "Can I have a glass of Arcadian Merlot, please?" She would stop at one glass -- maybe one and a half. There was no way she wanted to end up tipsy on a dinner meeting of such importance. She looked across the table to Frank Fontaine, just as the waiter did for his drink order. |

"I'll have a glass of the same," Fontaine told the waiter. In all actuality, he wanted something much stronger, but this was neither the time nor the place. Glancing at his watch then the door, Fontaine let out a long sigh. By no means was he an impatient man, but he was beginning to tire of Suchong's many vices. His perpetual tardiness was only one of a long list. If the man wasn't such a genius Fontaine would've throttled him already. A few more minutes passed before he let out another long sigh. This meeting was but one of many that needed to be taken care of today. Fontaine Fisheries was busier now than they'd ever been, and Fontaine Futuristics recently made some very promising breakthroughs with Dr. Tenenbaum's extensive adam research--which they were supposed to begin discussing over twenty minutes ago. "You know, Dr. Tenenbaum," Fontaine began with a small smile, "I think I can count the number of times I've seen you out of the laboratory on one hand. I have to tell you, it is quite refreshing." |

"Oh, Mr. Fontaine," Tenenbaum shook her head and shrugged slightly. "That's sweet of you to say, but if you knew how odd I felt out here -- out anywhere, really -- it might be another story." With a surprisingly bright smile, Tenenbaum managed to look quite happy for a few moments before remembering Suchong and ripping her gaze from Fontaine to the entrance of the restaurant. He probably hadn't even left his apartment yet. He was most likely fiddling with his equipment, still not showered or changed. Not the least bit presentable, as usual. She used the time to turn the conversation to Fontaine's new work, knowing that once Suchong arrived he would dominate the impromptu meeting with his ideas and most of all, his nonsense. "I've noticed your Fontaine Futuristics is really beginning to sell those Accu-Vox recorders..." She smiled in a tight-lipped sort of thank you to the waiter and took the glass of wine from his hand, taking a small sip and setting it down in front of her. "I find myself using my own all the time." |

Fontaine nodded his thanks to the waiter and took more than a moderate sip from the glass before gently placing it on the table. "Glad to hear it," he replied to Dr. Tenenbaum's comment, smiling. "I guess that just proves that what they say is true. Everyone who's anyone uses Accu-Vox." Glancing again at his watch, Fontaine briefly shifted his eyes to the entrance of the Kashmir. "As much as I'm enjoying your company, Dr. Tenenbaum, there are several other engagements I must attend this afternoon and I'm having doubts that Dr. Suchong is going to make it. Should we proceed without him?" |

She wanted to, she drastically wanted to. But she also didn't want to have to tell Suchong every single detail about the meeting later when he annoyed her to fill him in on what happened. That happened more times than she cared to count. "Unfortunately, Mr. Fontaine, he has all of his latest research updates on the conditioning work. And that's something I need from him to continue what I'm working on and what we were both going to update you on as well." She paused and stared at the basket of bread in the middle of the table before reaching out and swiping a piece, chewing a small bite before speaking again. Her voice had lowered considerably. "Although, one thing I had to remind myself to tell you tonight no matter what was that this... this gathering... it can only be done by little girls." She had tried the experiment the night before on a young boy. The results were less than positive. She lost the slug and the boy lost some of his mind. He almost lost his life too. Tenenbaum wasn't sure how she would've felt had that happened. |

Fontaine found himself leaning forward across the table as Dr. Tenenbaum lowered her voice. His eyes mirrored her excitement for the discovery. "Really?" he asked in wonder, slowly leaning back in his seat. His left hand tugged lightly at the smooth skin on his chin--a trademark Fontaine gesture for when he was lost in thought. "Only girls," he muttered more to himself than to the doctor. Fontaine's mind reeled. This news surprised him, but he was no less delighted. The orphans would not be hard to come by. For all of Ryan's ramblings about Rapture being a utopian dream, the city had its own economic problems. Ryan envisioned a society where a man could start with nothing and work his way to the top unrestrained. It was possible--he, himself, was living proof--but not for everyone. Even in a society of the world's elite, somebody had to scrub the toilets. Fontaine quickly understood how pivotal such people would be to his success. "Well," he finally continued with a wide grin, "That's one less bathroom we'll have to build in the orphanage." He picked up the glass of merlot and tipped it in Tenenbaum's direction before taking another swig. "Good work, Doctor." |

She reeled back slightly at his line concerning the bathrooms, trying to mute her shock at it. Although, that was the kind of thing she would expect Fontaine to say. Finishing the piece of bread, she grabbed at the glass of wine and took a swig unlike her first sip -- this one was long and finished the glass off. All she could do was silently curse at Suchong. There was so much to be discussed and he had to continue his streak of tardiness. It was so like him, the little rat. "I wanted to make sure I told you that, anyways. But I guess the rest will have to wait." She managed to offer a scowl with her last words and then waved off the waiter when he asked if she wanted another glass of wine. Tenenbaum knew what they had consumed here, albeit a small amount, would be put on Fontaine's tab -- and she had another meeting to get too. She knew Fontaine most likely had many other places to be and both of them sitting there gnawing on bread and waiting on Dr. Suchong wasn't productive for either of them. "Maybe we should get Suchong to set up the next meeting time. Then he might actually show up." |

Fontaine smiled politely at the suggestion, draining the last of the merlot before replying. "I'm afraid, Doctor, that if we left the meeting up to Suchong, there'd be no meeting at all." The moment Fontaine's glass returned to the table, the waiter was there offering a refill. "No thank you, Henry. I believe we're going to have to cut our dinner short," he handed the waiter a hefty tip. "If you'll just put this on my tab please." As the waiter smiled graciously and left the table, Fontaine turned his attention back to Dr. Tenenbaum. "Well, Dr. Tenenbaum, this has been very interesting. Please continue to keep up the wonderful work you're doing for Fontaine Futuristics." Fontaine rose from the table and offered her his hand. "And if you happen to see Suchong, tell him I'll be by to check his progress later this afternoon." |
