"Loguetown: the highlight of East Blue. Everyday ship after ship comes in, either to see the historical gallows, for trade, or for something more sinister. A very bustling city also means bustling crime. Pirates come from everywhere to congregate here, in secret and in public. There are also plenty of rookie pirates trying to make their mark here, the same with anywhere in the world. Unfortunately, piracy is very, very illegal and all pirates are more or less scum, so somebody needs to stop all of those rookies."

Rossier watched as the Lieutenant paced back and forth, giving his speech to the small group of newly recruited Ensigns. The base was rather quiet today as all of the other marines were already on their duties or sleeping. The Lieutenant, whose name Rossier was not familiar with, had held the new recruits behind. The Lieutenant approached one of the other Ensigns and poked him in the chest.

"That is where you gentlemen come in. Piracy needs to be contained. You guys are rookies yourselves, but you're Marines! Which means..?" The Lieutenant stopped speaking and raised his finger, walking away from the Ensign and reassuming his pacing. The recruits looked at each each other in confusion, not sure if the question was rhetorical or to be answered by them. Slight whispers could be heard.

"Well..?"

One of the Ensigns cleared their throat and piped up. "Sir, if I may ask. What does being a Marine signify?" The Lieutenant laughed and walked to the Ensign who had asked the question, patting him on the shoulder. "It means you're better than them. They're pirates. Pirates are scummy, rude, and above all weak. You can ruin them all!" The recruits nodded in agreement. "Now go out there and get rid of some pirate scum for me! Report back if you do, and only if you do. I don't want to see any beaten recruits back in here. I'm putting my faith in you men."

The recruits cheered and exitted the base, their spirits and energy revitalized by the Lieutenant's speech. All save for Rossier, who was already downright determined to get some pirates anyway. The recruits talked amongst themselves about what to do and where to go. "Where's the best place to find some pirates? The bars, alleys? Any ideas, guys?" They scratched their heads, trying to formulate a plan about how to get rid of some pirates. "Well, if we split up, then we could multiple places, and get rid of MORE PIRATES!" The group cheered again, raising their weapons. Rossier stayed silent but was still excited about this. One of the Ensigns counted out the people. "Well there's one.. two.. six of us! That's three groups of two? Sound good?" The recruits nodded and noted their agreement. They began to talk amongst themselves about who would go with who. The shortest and most likely weakest of the group immediately grabbed Rossier by the arm, shouting "He's mine! I want him!" Rossier looked down at the guy and raised his eyebrow, but was not surprised. He was ridiculously tall, so it was expected that they would think strength comes with that. "If anything he can just scare 'em away!" The other four in the group laughed at the small recruit and began to walk away. "You can have him," They said eagerly, "He's mute!"

Then, suddenly, silence. The recruit looked up at Rossier in terror. "Wait, what? No. Say something, silly!" Rossier looked down at the recruit and shrugged. The recruit whimpered quietly and let go of the tall man, still staying by his side. "Well fine then, but I'm still staying with you. They're going that way, so.. let's go the other way!" The recruit yelled excitedly and pointed in the opposite direction, in the general viscinity of some streets and pubs. "What do you say, big guy?" Rossier shrugged and followed the puny Ensign as he headed towards one of the lesser-crowded streets.

Rossier watched as the little marine practically dived into a small pub, eager to fight some pirates. Rossier rolled his eyes and shuffled in after the smaller person, ducking his head under the low door. The Ensign tried to unsheath his sword, which took him several attempts, some pathetic grunting, and finally a yell. "ALRIGHT! Let's kill some PIRATES!" The pub's inhabitants looked up at the marine, raising their eyebrows, scoffing, and going back to their business. They did not appreciate their presence at all. Either Marines barging in was a common occurence, they were pirates, or this tiny marine was really that pathetic. The little marine sighed and put away his sword, which took several attempts as well. "Maybe it's not that easy.." He said, bowing his head and slumping up to the bar. Several of the patrons eyed Rossier as he sat next to the little man and patted him on the back, trying to comfort him half-heartedly. Rossier didn't think it would be that easy to find any pirates. Pirates could be particularly elusive at times. Some of this, however, could be Rossier's fault - his stature would scare any rookie pirates away. Rossier was by no means a very powerful person, but his looks gave him that persona. He hoped that he would soon live up to his expected strength, through dedication and training. Fighting pirates would probably help too. Rossier looked at the pathetic little man next to him, smirking silently. If this guy was alone, he would sure attract some attention.

Wait. That's it.

Rossier's eyes widened, and he began to tap the Ensign on the shoulder. "What?" Rossier eagerly gestured for the Marine to stay put. As Rossier went to get up the little Ensign went to follow him, but Rossier again gestured for the little marine to stay there. A mildly-sober patron of the bar spoke up. "Little buddy, the big man wants you to stay there for a second. Right?" Rossier nodded to the patron and bowed to him, showing him thanks for relaying the message correctly. Rossier proceeded to exit the bar and head down the street, far out of plain sight. It would take a couple of minutes for his plan to go into effect, so he decided to kill some time. The plan was that the little man would get over his head in some trouble with the patrons, who were either disgruntled citizens or actually pirates. Either way he hoped that they would try to pick a fight with the little man, now that Rossier had left. Unfortunately, that is when Rossier would arrive and try to defuse the situation, probably with violence or using his size as an intimidation factor. Fighting would be nice but not with that many people in the bar. But it would be worth a try. Rossier waited around outside the bar, pulling out his rifle and checking it out. It was old, worn, and broken. Thankfully he didn't use it to shoot bullets. He was never much of a marksman. Close combat suited him more because of his height and he wanted to truly see the face of his enemy. Shooting someone from a distance almost seemed disrespectful.

After ten or so minutes of waiting around, Rossier decided it probably good to head back in. He armed his rifle, expecting a fight. He didn’t know if he was really ready to hurt somebody yet; he never had. But there was a first for everything, and if there were pirates in there (or anyone hurting a fellow marine) then they deserved a good butt whooping anywho. He barged in, rifle at the ready, and -

Nothing. The little marine was sitting at the bar, enjoying a conversation with several of the patrons. They were laughing and having a rather good time. Rossier’s entrance startled them slightly. Rossier looked around and slung his rifle back unto his back, disappointed and embarrassed. “Hey, come on over!” The small Ensign gestured Rossier over to a chair. “These fellas are sure kind! Want a drink?” Rossier shook his head in refusal. He didn’t drink or smoke. Rossier raised his eyebrows. How old was this little marine anyway? Old enough, hopefully. The group laughed at Rossier’s expression, and clinked their glasses together. “What are funny man you are, tall one! What is your name?” Rossier looked at the man but said nothing. He wasn’t trying to be rude, but he had never spoken a word as long as he remembered. The little marine piped up and said “Oh! This guy’s a mute. I dunno his name though,”, patting Rossier on the shoulder. The tiny man leaned in and whispered to Rossier, ”This isn’t all bad news, I got some intel.” Rossier looked confused at the Ensign as he pulled away and laughed. The rest of the group joined him in laughing. The Ensign stopped laughing and sighed. “Well gentlemen, it’s time we said our goodbyes. Me and tall guy here have to make our leave.” The patrons sighed and groaned, but let the two recruits leave. They shouted their goodbyes as the two exited the bar. The little marine pulled Rossier to the side and looked up at him.

“So, about that intel. They said that there was apparently some activity up around the northern part of town. Nobody knows who they are, but they might be PIRATES!” The puny Ensign eagerly grabbed his sword and ran in the direction of the north. Rossier rolled his eyes and followed him, but did not run. He simply walked and scuffed his feet as the little man hurried. Fortunately, Rossier’s ridiculously long stride put him on almost equal terms with the short man’s scampering. Rossier wondered if where they were headed would actually lead to pirates. If it did, he hoped they wouldn’t be in over their head.
