Uh, yeah, IDK. Just doing a thing. People are welcome. Preferably people that do not have prior histories with these characters, is about all I really care. I... think this is going to happen just prior to the Ice Festival business for reference. So I change my mind after discussion. It is right after. I think. It may change again! On to IC stuff!

“Man, this place is absolutely enormous. And I'd thought Brightopolis was big.” The pokemon turned in a slow circle, crimson eyes flicking from building to building in a sort of bemused awe.

“Yeah, easy to get lost in, that's for sure.” Not that Kate seemed at all put out by the notion. If anything, the wiry blonde seemed to relish the idea of having to search for everything. “Your master's still a coward for not wanting to come with us.”

The lucario accompanying her lashed his tail, ears slicking back as he growled, aura voice projecting a little louder in irritation. “He's not my master.” A pause. “Nor a coward, for that matter.”

“I see you have your priorities straight. Partner, then. Better?” Kate grinned over her shoulder and the fighting type huffed softly.

“If you must. But for not coming along, I don't really blame him myself. There's a lot of auras around here to deal with. Ben's never been the best at filtering.” Anubis rubbed a paw across his muzzle, ears flicking back and forth rapidly for a moment or two. “Place like this could get overwhelming quick in that sort of situation.”

“Are you saying he couldn't handle it?” Kate planted her hands on her hips and turned to face her traveling companion with a challenging gleam in her eye.

“No, he probably could.” Anubis folded his paws over his chest and met her gaze squarely. “However, if you knew something was going to give you a migraine if you did it, would you want to do it if you didn't absolutely have to?”

The blonde tilted her head as she mulled that over, then shrugged, dropping her hands to her sides again. “...touche. I'll let it slide for now, I suppose.” And with that, Kate turned her attention back to the plaza they were standing in, looking around with interest. “Still doesn't excuse him for siccing you on me as a babysitter, so I'll get him for that later at the least.” Kate tapped the canine's nose lightly before turning her attention toward the city itself with a smile. Anubis sneezed and hopped back, growling irritably again.

“I thought it was more as a proxy, not as an escort. You're the one that was complaining about not being able to find each other later.”

“That was supposed to get him to come into the city with me, but he's too stubborn for his own good sometimes.”

“So are you.”

“Maybe, maybe not!” Kate didn't seem bothered by the counterthrust. “Babysitter, escort, proxy, I still don't think it's really going to mean he doesn't have to come into town in the end. But for now... let's get to the fun part.” She grinned as she studied a particularly picturesque candy store window and waited.

“You're just waiting for me to ask what 'the fun part' is, aren't you?” The lucario finally spoke up with a trace of impatience. “Well, I'm not going to, so there. And you're enjoying this entirely too much.”

Kate laughed. “Maaaaybe.” She picked a street at random and set off at a very brisk walk, leaving Anubis to bound after her so as not to lose her in the crowd.

“Don't tell me. You actually like being lost, don't you?” the lucario sighed.

“Sure, I won't tell you!” The pokemon facefaulted at the laughing reply.

“By Arceus, I swear...” He could only pray that the lab didn't prove too hard to find.

Despite the nervous and prompt story Anubis had to tell, he had his audience in awe, as if most (if not all) of them managed to grasp what had probably happened, causing the lot of them to cheer for Anubis all the same. Malcom was happily clapping as well until his attention was caught by Kate again, the young aide chuckling nervously at the whole derailment of why she was here in the first place.

"O--oh, right, of course! Erhrm!" He said, adjusting his glasses a little at the prospect of continuing on with assisting Kate in becoming a Pokemon Adventurer. "Since you have your gear now, we can go through the basics on how they work--particularly, the methods in which PokeBalls are used, how the PokeDex works, as well as a few other bits and pieces here and there. The PokeBrace has tutorials programmed into its systems for instruction, but some people tend to prefer human instruction, right?" He offered before pulling out a list of Pokemon from his laboratory coat.

"On our list of available Pokemon, we have something of a wide variety. We have Squirtles, Bulbasaurs, Charmanders, Pikachus, Zubats, Chikorita, Cyndaquill, Totodile, Treecko, Torchic, Mudkips, Turtwig, Chimchar, Piplup, Snivy, Tepig, Oshawatt, Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie--all of them are available in either gender. Unfortunately, we are running rather low on Eevees at this time--it seems to be a very popular Pokemon amongst certain trainers, and demand for that breed has been unusually high of late. We might still have one Eevee pup available but..." Malcom explained, his face cringing a little at the thought, leaving the unknown flaw unexplained. "Well... there are a lot of other options..." He said as if to move the conversation away from that particular Pokemon.

"As for your brother, we can make sure to accomodate him as much as possible--especially once the monarchs hear of his incredible exploits! They've been known to move a mountain or two for certain people," he said with a bit of a nod. He hoped he was getting the point across on that one--they were willing to do much for someone as talented as one that could capture an Avatar!

Anubis just kept his muzzle shut at this point, hoping the attention would die down, because he didn't really want to have to try to elaborate on anything at this point.

"The... right. Okay." Kate looked a bit momentarily bemused at the mention of royalty, but recovered for the most part quickly. "I'll make sure to bring that up, yeah." It was an interesting tidbit to file away, anyhow. This place had a ruling family or whatnot, not a presidency or anything like that. Kate was starting to wonder if she should bring up the fact that they weren't from anywhere on the planet at any point in the near future.

It was probably better to leave that for when she drug Ben into this mess, however, so she set it aside again, turning her attention back to the rest of the information provided for her own benefit. "Some information on the pokedex and that might be handy sometime. I've never really paid them much mind before. I have a general idea of how pokeballs work already, I think." She couldn't deny a certain amount of curiosity about the eevee, but only in an academic sense of there being a reason that Malcom didn't want to elaborate on his 'but' over any actual interest in the fuzzball as a starter. Her cousin had had enough of that breed that it really didn't interest her any more.

Kate considered the rest of the options. She was a morning person so a zubat probably wouldn't work out well. Also, she highly doubted her cats, housepets or no, would tolerate a rat, flying or otherwise, so that left the traditional starters. And in that case, she didn't really much want a fire pokemon. They tended to be volatile and she'd rather something steadier. "I admit you have me curious on your eevee, but I'm not sure I'd want one as a starter... I think I'd prefer a grass or water type, really."

"Ah, a Grass or Water type, eh?" Malcom said, leaping at the conversational point and doing everything he could to avoid discussion about the lone Eevee pup they had in the nursery--that was not to say that the Pokemon was undeserving of a loving trainer, but the poor creature definitely had its... quirks. "We have quite a few of those, actually. We have a mother Venusaur here in the nursery who just gave birth to a litter of Bulbasaur about a week ago, if you would like to see them. Otherwise, we still have Squirtles, Piplups, Snivy, Oshawatts, Chespins, Chikoritas and Totodiles at the Nursery as well--though Totodiles can be a little shy and aggressive when meeting someone for the first time. But come, come, why discuss it here when you can visit the nursery?" Malcom beckoned the both of them to follow him, leading the way towards the West Wing of the massive laboratory. As one could imagine, the Nursery dominated almost the entirety of the west side of the building, housing all kinds of Pokemon--either through maternity areas, health and welfare centers, and even a small playground for Pokemon to play in. As indicated, near the playground, a massive Venusaur was walking along at its rather slow and leisurely pace, surrounded by her six Bulbasaur babies. Various other Pokemon were around as well, tended by a rather large staff of nurses and breeders that worked directly for the lab.

"The nursery is always rather noisy," Malcom explained, chuckling nervously as he raised his voice. "But having so many Pokemon in one place, its kind of unavoidable, eh?" He said as he looked around at the different breeds interacting with one another. "We also have daycare services here as well, in case you feel the need to leave one of your companions here. Some Pokemon are just ill-suited for travelling, even with the relative comfort of PokeBalls."

Anubis and Kate both followed after Malcom as he led the way to the nursery. The former mostly to get away from all the other people staring at him, rather than any actual interest in the babies or anything. Kate laughed softly as she watched the venusaur and her children curiously. "I would be surprised if it were otherwise. I'm a nurse, I've been in a nursery before, don't worry, the noise doesn't bother me." Never for this reason, admittedly, but still. She did like baby pokemon well enough and much preferred caring for them over being in the trauma wards.

Of the possibilities, she had to admit that the ones that sounded the most interesting were the bulbasaurs, or an oshawott or a squirtle, perhaps. Piplups and snivy tended to be haughty and Sassy was enough of that for her, and the mention of totodiles aggressiveness was a point against them. As for chespin and chikorita, well. She didn't know much about the latter and the former hadn't ever really appealed to her. They were often too passive for her tastes.

"You've got a wonderful setup here, Mister Tian. I'm impressed," she added as she looked around the playground to see what else happened to be wandering, though she kept her eye on the bulbasaurs and their momma. Best not to just rush up to a strange pokemon and all, especially a mother with babies. That was a quick way to get hurt. "Those'd be the bulbasaurs, then? Awfully cute, aren't they?"

"Oh, don't praise me--this is all Professor Hawthorne's work. My apologies for her not being here to personally greet you--she is often abroad in other regions. She never did like the idea of sending aides out to do all her research for her, so instead, we make sure this place doesn't fall apart in her absence. We also analyze all of the data the trainers in the world collect for us and send her our findings. More often than not, she has a lot of insight into everything we analyze, but we help out as much as we can," he said, a little bashfully, but he bowed his head to her all the same. "Thank you very much for your compliment though."

He looked over at the Venusaur with her little ones, nodding towards them. "Indeed! We weren't expecting such a large litter from her--most Bulbasaur litters are around two to three--but Margaret has always been rather stout. She's awfully protective of them--you'll have to get her approval first before you can hold one of her babies," he said, slight smirk on his face before he moved towards a nearby cabinet, pulling out a small bag of PokeTreats. "Here, you'll need a few of these to get her attention," he said, handing them to her. Of course, at that moment, the massive Venusaur was making her way in their general direction, lumbering as she always did while her babies paraded around her. She seemed to take very good care of them, always giving them attention and licking them, or shaking her sprouted flower in order to make sure her babies bulbs were healthy, a strong, sweet scent following her wherever she went.

"Well, if you keep it in order, then some of the credit does go to you, in my opinion. Maintaining things certainly isn't a walk in the park." Kate smiled a little as she watched the dinosaurian pokemon wandering their way, with her little brood pattering along behind. She nodded at Malcom's comment about needing the mother's approval. "I'd be surprised if it were otherwise," she commented with a soft laugh, then her smile broadened a bit as the aide produced a bag of treats.

Anubis sidled around the pair of humans and slunk further into the playground, giving the venusaur a respectful berth as he explored a little. He didn't really want to agitate the pokemon, even if she wasn't necessarily a threat to him. She had babies to look after after all, and the lucario could respect that.

Kate, on the other hand, considered the direction the brood was headed in as she took some treats from Malcom. "Her name's Margaret, you said? Pretty name, that." The blonde moved further into the room and sat down a bit away from the grass pokemon, settling the treats in her lap for the moment.

She waited until the venusaur definitely had noticed her before smiling and speaking again, treating the pokemon just as if she were another person. "Evening, Miss Margaret. My name's Kate Summers, 'tis a pleasure to meet you. Might I have a bit of your time, perhaps?" Anubis glanced over, hesitating, then decided to keep out of it for now unless Kate asked for a translator.

Margaret approached Kate a little slowly, once the trainer had gotten the Venusaur's attention, but was rather eager for more food. Apparently, taking care of so many little ones took a lot out of her. "'Saaurrr," the Pokemon uttered as it grew close, sniffing at the woman for a moment, just beyond arm's reach. The little ones were a mixture of reactions, of course--some huddled behind the legs of their mother, peaking around her massive knees, one sniffed in Kate's direction, while the last one seemed to approach the trainer with little reserve or shyness, until its mother bellowed again, causing it to pause in its approach and look back towards its momma.

"Bulba!" The little one said, sniffing at the treats and trying to inch forward without his mother noticing.

Kate smiled a little and flipped a couple of treats to the venusaur, one after the other, glancing toward the small crowd of little ones around her feet. Two caught her eye, as the two boldest, as one sniffed cautiously without hiding in the safety of momma's ankles, and the other was so bold as to start marching straight at her. She appreciated boldness, but caution was also a good thing. So those two were the ones she focused on instead of the more reserved or shy ones. Not that the rest were bad pokemon, just not her style, nor ones she'd want for helping her figure out the ropes. They'd be better suited to someone who had a better idea of what they were going to do, in her opinion.

With a glance to Margaret for permission before she did so, Kate tossed a couple treats in the direction of the two that had caught her eyes, though she didn't address them yet, still more focused on the mother. If the rest showed interest at that, they'd also get a treat tossed to them, but she didn't pay them much mind otherwise. "So, Miss Margaret, I'm sure you already have a pretty good idea why I'm here, so I'll get straight to the point." The blonde smiled and tilted her head to the side as she studied the venusaur. "I'm looking to become a trainer and I was hoping that you might consider letting me take one of your lovely children to help me out." She tossed another treat to Margaret and shrugged. "I'm not planning on being super-adventurous and I like this place, so I can see myself coming here a lot to help out and we'll be sure to visit whenever I'm here, if that helps."

Meanwhile elsewhere, Anubis, having completed his exploration and noting that Kate looked unlikely to get stepped on in the foreseeable future, turned his attention back to his other goal. He sidled around venusaur and lady to bound over to Malcom. He stood back up on his hind legs, tilting his head as he whuffed softly to get the aide's attention. "So, uh, mister? Those Brace things. Do they come with good voice recognition and activation software by default? Like where you could use that for pretty much most things you'd do with it?" He rubbed the back of his neck with a paw, tail swishing uncertainly behind him. "And, well. Is there some way to get an actual keypad or keyboard on it instead of just a touchscreen? Something more... tactile, I guess is the word?" The lucario looked decidedly uncomfortable and didn't really want to get into the whys and wherefores of his requests there if he didn't have to.

"Saaaur," Margaret said, as if it could understand the young woman before her. She lapped up the treats with about as much speed as she walked, though the food seemed to be quite enjoyed by the massive grass Pokemon. The little ones continued to shy behind their mother, save for the two bold ones. The both of them stepped a bit forward when treats were offered to them, lapping them up as well despite their mother's watchful gaze. She let out a low growl at first at Kate's gesture, but no other move was made by the motherly Venusaur. It looked like Margaret was content with Kate playing with her little ones--if she continued to be liberal with the food.

"Bulba," one of the bold ones said after he munched on an offered treat, the Pokemon sniffing in Kate's direction before he mistakenly thought one of her shoelaces was also something to eat. Munch!

Suddenly, there was a 'woof' sound, causing Malcom to pull his attention from Kate and Margaret to look down upon Anubis. The aide's eyes immediately seemed to brighten at seeing the heroic Pokemon again, causing Malcom to kneel down to Anubis' level. "Most software on a PokeBrace is activated through the touch-screen upon it. That being said, all of the settings on a PokeBrace can be adjusted to be activated by voice command, if you truly wish it--not really all that hard to do, I just haven't ever done it myself. Its awkward to have the PokeBrace start doing random things just because you're having a conversation, you know?" He explained, but he nodded his head.

"Certainly, we can provide with modifications so the PokeBrace can be used through voice commands--as for a keypad and keyboard, you'll notice," he said, showing off his own PokeBrace. A button on the very top of the PokeBrace could be seen as Malcom pressed it, and a very thin keyboard folded out of the bottom of the device, "that each PokeBrace already has one, though it can be a bit on the fragile side. We're still trying to find a good way to implement it in a more rugged fashion, since the lives of Pokemon Trainers is anything BUT fragile. So if you feel the need to have a more robust keyboard, we could probably fashion one for your trainer."

Kate blinked a little as the bolder bulbasaur suddenly lunged forward, snapping at something near her foot. She managed to keep her initial reaction to just a slight rocking back, especially when it became obvious he wasn't trying to actually attack her foot. She snorted at the rather comical sight of him straightening up with one end of her shoelace in his mouth, slurping at it. "Hey, you goober, that's not spaghetti. I'm not sure it's very edible, either." It certainly lacked any semblance of nutritional value to the point that it would make snack food look healthy.

She tossed another treat over to Margaret to be on the safe side, and glanced over at the other little bulbasaur beside her as she reached down to try to extricate her shoelace. "Saaaur," the second commented finally, looking rather aggrieved at her brother's antics. She appeared to be resisting an urge to roll her eyes and Kate smiled a bit more, dropping a treat right in front of the bane of laces to try to get him off her shoe with one hand, the other held out to the second saurian to sniff at carefully.

"Likes to look before he leaps, does he? How often do you have to pull him out of the messes he makes?" Kate had no idea if any of these pokemon completely understood her, but she always felt it best to assume that all of them could, even if she didn't expect answers that she'd be able to understand. Once her shoelace was liberated, a second treat was carefully proffered to the less bouncy of the two bolder bulbasaurs, and a tentative scratch between the ears to go with it if the little grass type didn't object.

"Well, when someone can't use a touchpad, you need something else to activate stuff, that's all. Honestly, if you could turn the the touchpad off entirely or whatever, that'd be grand." Anubis rubbed a paw over his muzzle as Malcom moved to be at eye level, flattening his ears momentarily before flicking them back forward with an effort. The guy was just being courteous, but the lucario didn't like being reminded that his species wasn't one of the tallest out there.

He tilted his head in thought a moment, then continued, "But couldn't you just make it have a command that you're unlikely to string together in a casual conversation to turn the voice command stufff on and off? Seems to me like that should solve the issue of it trying to do stuff when you're just chatting. Like, make is so you need to say something like 'Computer, activate voice recognition software' before it'll actually start taking commands like 'call' or 'search' or whatever. Don't usually say something like that when just talking as far as I know.Or you could put a button that turns the voice activation on and off and that'd fix the talking issue too, maybe."

The lucario shrugged a bit, ears pricking forward with interest as the aide then demonstrated the hidden keyboard. He moved over to check out the thin little keyboard that was being displayed and resisted the temptation to poke at it in curiosity, worried about breaking it by accident or something. That'd be his luck anyhow. "Huh. Well, something that is as sturdy as is possible would be better, but if it's too much of a problem, that'd probably be fine as far as it went, really. Just so long as it's an option and all that." Anubis didn't want to be unreasonable, and it wasn't like Ben wasn't a fairly careful sort and unlikely to be purposefully rough with his toys. With it being retractable like that, it'd only be if something unpredictable popped up when the keyboard was in use that it might ever end up being a concern, after all. So really, it would probably be workable for the most part.

The bold Bulbasaur toddler seemed quite eager to chew the shoelace into ribbons, eventually, though, especially with the offered treat, he spit out the shoelace--covered in saliva, of all things--before gulping up the treat happily. Margaret, meanwhile, seemed rather satiated with the treats offered to her, gobbling them down with a single lick. "Saaurrr," the giant Pokemon said before she stepped closer to Kate, towering over her as if going to move the woman out of the way...

Until Margaret sat down fully upon the grass, right next to Kate, to watch her little ones play around the newcomer. The other bulbasaur younglings decided at that point, it was safe to get a sniff or two of their visitor, while the two bold ones almost practically leaped into Kate's lap. They certainly didn't object to physical attention, that was for sure. Even Margaret seemed to take a liking to Kate--however, this close to the massive Venusaur, it was clear that Margaret was getting along in her years, and she seemed to tire easily.

"Hm," Malcom said, adjusting his glasses as he continued the conversation with Anubis. "I suppose that could work. I'll see if we can program such a command phrase into the PokeBrace--along with a phrase for disabling the touch pad as well, if you really want. It just seems like your trainer needs some really unusual modifications..." The aide said, still not able to put two-and-two together on the condition of Anubis' owner. Perhaps there was some kind of physical impairment on the part of the trainer that needed to be accounted for, but for the life of him, he felt oblivious. "It would probably be easier to program a button for doing such things, however. Each PokeBrace has around six unused buttons that can be programmed and tailored for each individual trainer--but most of the time, such buttons are still left unused. We try to think of everything with the design of the PokeBrace, after all," Malcom said, nodding with a bit of pride in his voice.

"That being said, we are working on a sturdier version of the keypad. We've been looking into holographic keyboards for the PokeBraces, but the sensors for something like that tend to malfunction in extreme weather or break with a lot of wear and tear--so its been a chore to say the least. We want to make sure the PokeBrace is the most ideal, rugged piece of equipment at a trainer's fingertips so it can go anywhere they can--so any ideas someone has is always looked into."

Kate didn't waste too much time sighing over the state of her shoelaces. She had cats, after all, and things like shoelaces were toys to them, no matter how much you said otherwise. And besides, suddenly Margaret was looming for a moment, and then sitting beside her.

And there were two bulbasaurs suddenly in her lap. She laughed and reached up to give the venusaur an affectionate rub at the side of her jaw, before doling out the last few of her treats to all the little frog-plants. "Thanks, Margaret," she said simply, spreading a bit of attention out to each of the other four for a moment, each one getting a friendly pat and scratch before Kate moved to better situate the two that were looking to take up property rental on her thighs.

She rather liked both of them, but she really didn't need more reasons to get new shoelaces constantly, so her money remained on the slightly more mature-seeming lady. The fact she'd jumped into Kate's lap just as eagerly as her brother, or perhaps because she didn't want to be left out, did indicate she was still a kid, which was also to the good. "How'd you like to be called Peggy, hmm?" Kate didn't spend time around her cousin without learning a thing or two. Just as Richards got the nickname 'Dick' on occasion, so Margarets could get called Peggy. And with her mom, it seemed appropriate.

Anubis glanced over as Margaret loomed for a moment, then turned his attention back to Malcom after determining that Kate wasn't about to be sat on. "Mmm, I suppose he does. I guess I'm just used to it, or something." He wasn't going to say exactly why himself, if the human couldn't guess. "And really, the buttons would work for whatever. Didn't know you had them. Turning on and off the voice command software for one, another to turn on the touch-stuff or whatever, I guess, yeah. Whatever's easiest for you." Not that the latter would ever get used, but hey.

And then the conversation turned back to the keyboard. Anubis slicked his ears back at the mention of the idea of a holo-keyboard. "...frankly, that sort of keyboard would be even worse than the touchpad, so let's just stick with what it's got already, please? I'm not any sort of expert on that stuff, so I'd trust you to know better how to modify it or work with it, honestly."

Malcom made it a point to nod to Anubis, a smile creeping across his face. "Not to worry--we'll make sure to handle the modifications for your trainer. If I didn't know any better, it almost seems like your trainer has a visual deficiency or perhaps has another physical disability--but that's really none of my concern. Whatever he needs to have done to it, we'll do it, no problem!" He said with a reassuring nod. "And don't worry about the holographic keyboard--we weren't really putting that on the table to begin with. It was just a side-note of mine--my apologies!"

Margaret heaved a sigh of comfort as she got comfy next to Kate, the massive Pokemon watching her babies run around and play, particularly the ones in Kate's lap. Upon Kate giving one her babies a name, Margaret nodding with a bit of approval. She seemed supportive of Kate's decision--though whether it was just from fatigue or a general want for her children to be happy, one couldn't always be sure. "Saaaaurrr," Margaret said, before she snagged the other one from Kate's lap with a vine and started to groom it with her tongue. The rest of the babies ran around the pair, playing some odd version of tag--or at least, that's what it looked like. A few of the boys rammed their heads together, as if practicing their 'Tackle' attack.

Kate looked pleased at the general approval garnered by the tentative suggestion of names, and the little saurian in her lap wiggled all over in excitement. They both blinked as the erstwhile brother was suddenly scooped up for some motherly love. Kate started chuckling softly as the boy squalled petulantly in was was assuredly the traditional 'aw, mooooOOM!' complaint of many a boy as their mother 'makes them presentable.' "Peggy it is then, m'dear," Kate said quietly after a short pause, making sure her charge didn't want to join the game of tag. The newly minted Peggy seemed supremely content to lord it over the blonde's lap, however, looking smug and faintly superior. She had a person now, after all. Kate settled beside the Venusaur to watch for a while.

Anubis coughed at the mention of 'visual deficiency' by Malcom and shrugged a little. "You can ask him all about it, if you want to," was all he said on the matter, however. "Whatever you can do would be appreciated. Sounds like it's mostly stuff that shouldn't be all that hard to do, either... how long will it take to get that stuff ready? That way I know when we should come back and all that."

Almost on the heels of that, Kate raised her voice from where she was sitting comfortably by a small pile of tussling grass-frogs. "You guys want a part time nurse around here when I'm in town? I'm totally volunteering some free time irregardless, but I could use some way to get cash, too," she called over to Malcom as she scratched between Peggy's ears happily.
