Should I push a weight even if I can only get 4 reps max out of it?

HEllo,

I got a lecture from one of the bigger guys at the gym about always going hard even if its just small reps. Some people say you should go for volume, other says you should go for weight. What do you guys think? I'm trying to go for size.
Should I push a weight even if I can only get 4 reps max out of it?

Please help.
