Video explains it all. I did it a little differently from the video, so i'll post my way if the video proves to not work for someone.

I used Geodude, Clefairy, then eventually a ninja pikachu to steal the old rod.

Geodude defense curled, then I waited roughly 3-5 seconds to send out clefairy... followed by mud sport. Geodude died, but burned the enemy geodude's magnitude a couple of times... clefairy gets through and gets the old rod the part where the road turns down.

Then sent out geodude and used the same timing... only i sent out Pikachu instead of clefairy. Geodude burned the magnitude attack... enemy chu was targeting my geodude... and pikachu ran right throuh and ninja'd the fishing rod.

Video strat is a little easier/better than mine though since my way required slightly more precise timing... still only took about 6 tries though.

Was pretty challenging at first, adapting to the opposite style of play than we're used to in story mode, but i liked it.

I admit it. I cheated on this one, after scratching my head over the course of three days (for like 10min at a time). I ended up finding a video on Youtube that showed a rather efficient way to beat this challenge using only two Pokemon (twice each).

Step 1: Send out Geodude, switch him to Defense Curl.
Step 2: When Geodude hits the fourth (recessed) tree, send out Pidgey. Pidgey will get past the attackers, and bring the rod about halfway back.
Step 3: Repeat steps 1 and 2.

You win.

Yeah I used this metod and it works well, it's easier and you have 40 energy left so if you missclick one time you can do it again.
