So I just got back from the ABC Red Carpet Screening Tour I blogged about earlier. There’s a lot I want to say in this blog so it will probably end up long, but I expect that most people want to hear about Pushing Daisies most, so I’ll go right to it. Which is more than ABC did for us tonight..but I’ll get to that rant later.
It occurs to me that it would probably get me more attention if I were to open this by saying that Pushing Daisies sucked. Given that Ausiello, Roush and all the other critics I read say that it is absolutely brilliant, if I were to say it was, I dunno, AWFUL…then it would certianly get people talking.
But I can’t say that. Because they’re right. It’s completely brilliant, and I absolutely can’t wait to see more. It really is a show you have to see for yourself in order to “get,” but I promised my thoughts so I’ll see what I can do to describe it. The first thing that comes to mind is that it was like watching a Roald Dahl novel on TV. It was really “up there” in its own world( even moreso than Ugly Betty) but it is just so effortlessly charming that you buy it immidately. Its sense of humor is wonderful, and even the sad moments are played for comedy, and work as such, without losing their sadness either. Jim Dale as the narrator was a terrific choice — of course, I already have a bias towards him thanks to his terrific audiobook readings of Harry Potter — but he really helped to set the “rules” for the show. All the actors got up there with it and were fantastic in their parts. Plus, it’s a visual feast like nothing else on TV. The ads aren’t kidding, and I can’t wait to watch this on my own TV in closer proximity so I can admire the production design more. Everything about this pilot was great. It recalls the pilots of Grey’s Anatomy, Lost, Desperate Housewives, and Ugly Betty in knowing immidately exactly the kind of show it wants to be and going for it with all it’s got. The world it invites us into is so fully defined, immersive and fun that it’s irresistable.
Well, for most people.
I went with two friends. One of them enjoyed it and one did not. Like Lost, this is going to be a show that either you “get” and looooove, or really don’t care for. It’s a matter of personal tastes, but those who are willing and able to plug into its universe will love it. It’s a little early to speculate, but if the series maintains the level of quality of the pilot, ABC will have another television classic on our hands. If they handle this well, it’s going to be around for a long, long time. I read elsewhere that it is being shown at Comic-Con this year, and doing so is a really great move on ABC’s part. I just hope that the world falls in love with this show as much as I have. Those of you that blog here will love it and I can’t wait to discuss it further in the fall.
..... Okay, I think I'm done rambling now. To summarize: Pushing Daisies was great, Samantha Who? was good, Carpoolers was absent and the event itself was pretty bland. If the tour is coming your way, I'd suggest going, but maybe show up later for the screenings only.
