Following my piece last week on the surfacing online of a number of TV pilots, I heard from several industry insiders who had their own theories on who is uploading the files. The most intriguing came from a Hotmail account, and the writer claimed to be employed by one of the studios.
Following a series of emails back-and-forth (including a couple of benign ones from his work email address), I was able to confirm that he is indeed working for one of the studios. Specifically, he works in a low-to-mid level position at Warner Brothers Television. And according to him, he was at the very least one of the people who made sure that WB TV's new fall series "Pushing Daisies" made it online to various BitTorrent sites.
Here is some of what we discussed in emails and eventually by phone. I was requested to blur his exact position with the company, including the group and other identifying information.
Q: So why did you upload "Pushing Daisies?"
A: Well….to be specific, I didn't upload it myself. But my neighbor's kid loves swapping files through Usenet and Bittorrent sites. Actually, we've had a bit of an argument about it before. But I wanted to make sure the show got out there, and I didn't see why I couldn't help the cause. And (name withheld) was happy to do it, because he got a lot of…some kind of uploading credit. It allowed him to download other stuff he wanted.
Q: So what made you decide to pass along the file? Was this your idea, or did your boss approve it?
A: MY boss? Oh, God no. I mean…look, I think a lot of people….it's a bit like the military's 'Don't' Ask Don't Tell' rule. I think a lot of people think in theory that getting a show out there ahead of time is a good idea. Especially a show (like "Pushing Daisies") that generally gets a lot of excitement from people after they watch it.
But it's not like anyone I know would admit to that while they're on the clock, and it's not even something you would bring up seriously as a suggestion.
Q: But why not, if it's such a great idea?
A: Part of it is that we don't know if it's a great idea or not. I mean, there's a sense that it would be a good promotional move, but that's just a gut feeling by some of us. We really don't know one way or the other.
Plus, there are all sorts of legal and financial issues. You don't want to piss off your partners on the show, or the networks. Hey, we're looking at maybe having a strike next year with writers over just this type of thing. Whether or not they get paid for uses outside of the regular broadcast window. Particularly online use, like streaming and such.
Q: So let's get back to an earlier question. Given all of the caveats, why make sure the thing is uploaded at all?
A: I've asked myself that question a lot (laughing). The ironic thing is that as I understand it, other versions of the "Daisies" pilot have also shown up online. So the show didn't even need my help in this way.
I just thought it was a good idea. Even though as (some identifying info removed here) I don't have any direct stake in the show, it's a really great project. It's tough to describe, though, and while it makes great sense once you've seen it, it's one of those shows that will only work if people do tune in at least once.
Which, by the way, is one of the reasons that ABC and Warners are promoting the show in all sorts of venues. The pilot has been screened at everything from auditions for ABC reality shows to Comic-Con. We all believe in the show. And if I can do something that might in some small way help…I can live with that.
One last thing…some of this is also about building pressure with the network. I don't think anyone here involved with "Traveler" was exactly thrilled with the treatment ABC gave the show. But it didn't really have any champions inside either company. And I suppose all of us are hoping that this show gets the support it deserves.
Hmmmm, very interesting? Do you believe it?

Yes, very interesting indeed, but I don't know if I believe this person. There seems to be too many loose ends to his answers.
And he's plugging all sorts of ABC shows for no reason at all? Hard to believe if this were, to say, true.

I'm sure this person is lying, but if he isn't, I want to thank him for introducing me to my new favorite show

I don't believe it, the PD pilot was leaked by a group that has leaked several other pilots as well. Ones that are not from Warner Bros.
