There were a million and one things wrong with this. Karen was making poor, poor Dakota take some food over to some of the neighbor's houses; not everybody, only a select few that Karen thought she just had to meet. Eliot Kydek was one of those people. And he worked on a farm. Dakota didn't know if there was anything special about Eliot, but she was sure her aunt was just sneaking around pushing her to get a job. It was stupid, really. The plate of cookies sat comfortably on the palm of her hand as she stepped up onto the porch and knocked on the door of the house. Cookies. So original. And wasn't this supposed to be the other way around? Dakota was the new one. People should be bringing her cookies. Her stomach rumbled. And that would be pretty nice. The cookies looked pretty enticing right about then. So what if one made it to her mouth? It was just one cookie, out of about twenty. Like Eliot needed that many cookies for himself. Okay. Maybe two. But that was it. Honest. |

Eliot was working in the fields, the sun beating hard down upon him. A noise came from his house. Who could it be at this time of day? Eliot didn't have many friends. He walked towards the front door to see a young girl eating a plate of cookies on his doorstep. “Excuse me,” said Eliot. “Can I help you?” |

Dakota had been ever so patiently waiting for her neighbor to open the door, but it never happened. Instead, she was ambushed from the side. And she was caught. Her eyes wide, half-eaten cookie in her hand (it was only her fourth!), she smiled at Eliot even with her mouth full. She extended the plate in his directions. “Weezz aww fww woo! Woowies!” |

“Come again?” Eliot laughed, “I didn't quite catch that. Might I recommend chewing?” He flashed her a smile and waited for her to finish. |

Dakota frowned and swallowed her food. Or, his food. It was supposed to be, anyway. “These are for you,” she said, more carefully, giving him a calculating look. “My aunt's making me give cookies to everybody. Isn't that nice of her?” Yes, the last comment was a little bit sarcastic. But that was just how Dakota greeted people. |

“That was very nice of her. Who is your aunt?” Eliot replied, “Which house is hers?” Eliot was trying to be patient but he had work to do, and he wasn’t very open to talking to other people, especially people he didn’t know very well. And Dakota was taking time away from his work. |

Dakota gave him a bored look. Karen wasn't particularly the most interesting person to talk about. “Karen,” she replied, flatly, pointing her thumb over her shoulder. “And we live in that house. The one two steps away from this one. It's a big town, isn't it?” Her stomach rumbled again. Maybe she should head back home and beg for some cookies of her own. |

“Oh, Karen. Uhm. Right. Nice lady.” replied Eliot. Though, in truth, he hardly knew Karen. She'd visited a few times but Eliot didn't bother to get to know her. “Well, tell her I say hi. I've got to get back to work. I'm sure you have more cookies to deliver.” As he turned away he shouted back to her, “And you can keep the cookies, I could hear your stomach growling from over here.” He added a wink. |

Dakota began to walk away, still holding the plate of cookies, but a thought passed through her mind that made her turn on her heels. “Wait!” she yelled, moving towards him. “You have to do something with these cookies! Karen's going to beat me with a stick if I come home with a plate half full of cookies!” |

Eliot was eager to get back to work. He knew exactly how to get rid of her. But he realized, strangely enough, that he didn't mind the company. “Okay, bring the plate over here,” he replied. “I'll have one cookie and you can have the rest.” He actually looked forward to the time he would spend with her over cookies. |
