Brad Eldred - 1B Pirates - Age 26
.226/.310/.384, 3 HR, 10 RBI, 18/8 K/BB, 1 SB in 62 AB for Triple-A Nashville
.231/.311/.354, 1 HR, 8 RBI, 13/7 K/BB, 3 SB in 65 AB (AFL)

Eldred popped 40 homers -- including 12 in the majors -- in 2005, but since he also had a 77/13 K/BB ratio in 190 at-bats after being called up, the Pirates decided to sign Sean Casey to be their first baseman last season. The hope was Eldred would prove beyond the shadow of a doubt that he was ready to take over the job in 2007. Instead, he suffered a fractured and dislocated thumb in his 18th game for Nashville and missed the rest of the year. Back for the AFL, he struggled to a .231/.311/.354 line and needed time off due to a strained left shoulder. Eldred can still bash his way into the Pirates' plans, but it's unlikely that he'll be considered for a starting job in spring training. As much as the team could use another 30-homer guy, Eldred's proclivity for strikeouts and his shaky defense might prevent him from ever establishing himself in Pittsburgh. He's due to open the season back in Triple-A, and he probably won't be more than a two-category player if he is called up.
