Flooded Loddon Bridge park and ride stays closed

A flooded park and ride site in Berkshire will remain closed for the rest of the day.

The Loddon Bridge site in Winnersh, which has a history of shutting after heavy rainfall, has been affected again this week.

Wokingham council said it hoped it would reopen on Saturday but with more rain forecast this could be revised.

On Thursday, motorists across Berkshire endured travel delays after heavy rainfall caused flooding on some roads.

By mid-morning the B4494 Oxford Road in Newbury was barely passable between the Grove Road and Love Lane junctions.

Sandford Lane in Woodley and Emmbrook Road in Wokingham were also closed for a time.

Flood alerts have been issued for Lower River Loddon, the River Pang and the River Blackwater at Swallowfield.

New plan to cut risk of flooding

FLOOD risks in the Lambourn Valley are being targeted by West Berkshire Council under a new initiative.

Public consultation began this week on reducing the risk of flooding in the area and proposals include the establishment of a Lambourn Valley Flood Forum, highlighting the threat and preparing villagers to face it. The plan also involves investigating different solutions to the problem and Cllr Pamela Bale, responsible for West Berkshire emergency planning, is encouraging everyone to get involved. She said:

"With the different types of flooding that affect Lambourn it is impossible to find a single solution to the problem hence the comprehensive plan. All those involved and affected by flooding need to work together if the risk in the Lambourn Valley is to be reduced. I believe this is an excellent start."

The Lambourn Valley has experienced major problems with flooding over the years with the most recent occurrence inflicting misery upon residents, shop owners and racehorse trainers in January. The sewage systems collapsed and the villages of Lambourn and Eastbury were the worst hit. The area was also affected by severe flooding in 2000 and 2007 and West Berkshire is seeking residents' co-operation to aid the district and parish councils, Thames Water and the Environmental Agency to limit future problems. Thames Water, which is responsible for sewerage systems, is likely to take on a substantial degree of responsibility after recent flooding was exacerbated by ground water infiltrating ageing sewers in Lambourn. Public feedback is being sought and the council is producing leaflets on flooding for distribution by parish councils and the first draft plan and consultation can be found at www.westberks.gov.uk/floodingconsultation. The deadline for submission is August 30.

NEWBURY

WORK begins on the Kennet Centre multi-storey car park in Newbury on Monday, August 19

Shoppers are being warned that the repair work, which includes laying new decking to the roof level and the outdoor area of level two, will reduce the car park's capacity. The work will last for five weeks and West Berkshire Council is warning motorists of traffic problems during peak times.

Bray £1.2m water main works spark motorist delay warnings

Drivers are warned to expect months of disruption as work on a £1.2m new water main in Berkshire gets under way

Temporary traffic lights have been installed on Windsor Road in Bray where works are due to start later before heading along Upper Bray Road. The first phase of works are expected to be complete in November, with the second phase starting in spring. South East Water said the water main was needed to ensure it can continue to supply safe drinking water in the area. Spokesman James Smith said the firm had "worked hard" to minimise disruption in the area during the works.

Mr Smith added: "We appreciate that the traffic lights we need to put up to keep our workforce and the public safe will have an impact. I would therefore like to thank the community and commuters for their patience and apologise for any inconvenience."

South East Water has said homes and businesses in the area will still be accessible.

The second phase of works will see the new water main laid from Braywick roundabout to Bray Water Treatment works in Monkey Island Lane.
