WINNERSH BBC News Berkshire Flooded Loddon Bridge park and ride stays closed A flooded park and ride site in Berkshire will remain closed for the rest of the day. The Loddon Bridge site in Winnersh, which has a history of shutting after heavy rainfall, has been affected again this week. Wokingham council said it hoped it would reopen on Saturday but with more rain forecast this could be revised. On Thursday, motorists across Berkshire endured travel delays after heavy rainfall caused flooding on some roads. By mid-morning the B4494 Oxford Road in Newbury was barely passable between the Grove Road and Love Lane junctions. Sandford Lane in Woodley and Emmbrook Road in Wokingham were also closed for a time. Flood alerts have been issued for Lower River Loddon, the River Pang and the River Blackwater at Swallowfield.

BBC News Two die as severe weather hits UK Christmas getaway Two people have died as storms sweep across the UK. A man's body was pulled from the River Rothay in Cumbria by rescuers searching for a man who had been seen falling in. In Gwynedd, north-west Wales, a woman's body was found in a stream in full flow near her house. The deaths come as gale-force winds and heavy rain hit the Christmas getaway for road, rail, air and sea passengers. Fallen overhead power lines left thousands without electricity. Among those most affected by the severe weather conditions: As many as 27,000 customers were left without electricity in southern England, Southern Electric said, with 13,000 in and around Aldershot alone. Others were without power in Oxford; Poole in Dorset; and Petersfield in Hampshire Some 3,000 Western Power Distribution customers in Cornwall and a further 2,000 in other parts of the South West were left without electricity; by Monday evening some 800 were still without power. The Environment Agency issued a "severe" flood warning - meaning "danger to life" - in Weymouth, Dorset, where the public were advised to avoid the "extremely dangerous" Preston Beach area. Gusts of 87mph were recorded at Capel Curig in Conwy, North Wales, and disruption has been caused across Wales Northern Ireland will face some of the worst weather in the UK on Christmas Eve, with warnings of winds of up to 90mph UK high streets reported a 6% fall in shopper numbers on last year The rivers in Cumbria were "suffering an excess of water" because of the rain, Inspector Chris Wright of Cumbria Police said. The search of the River Rothay began when a member of the public saw someone fall into the water at 14.25 GMT, and the man's body was found about an hour later. He has not yet been identified. "It would be fair to say that the river in its current state did not assist the rescue operation. It was fast flowing, and a lot more water than normal, so yes it's fair to say that the weather contributed to the problem," said Insp Wright. In a separate incident, police in Bethesda, Gwynedd, are investigating the death of a woman whose body was recovered in water 50m from her house. It was thought the woman had left her house to check a water supply. "It's a small stream that runs off the mountain - about half a metre wide and three-quarters of a metre deep - but it was in full flow," Paul Smith from the Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Team told BBC Wales. Heavy rain and high winds caused disruption across Wales on Monday The Met Office has amber "be prepared" alerts for rain in Wales, south-west England and London and south-east England for Monday evening and Christmas Eve morning. And it has amber warnings for wind for parts of the UK on Christmas Eve, including Northern Ireland, the east of England, London and the South East, and north-west Scotland. BBC forecaster Peter Gibbs warned winds of 80mph would hit the south coast on Tuesday, while 70mph gusts were expected inland. He said the worst weather on Tuesday would be in Scotland and Northern Ireland while more bad weather was on the way for Thursday and Friday. "People might get there for Christmas, but they might have problems getting back later in the week," he added. By Monday evening the wind had brought down more than 60 trees on train lines, Network Rail said, while mud-slides and flooding also caused delays. Staff had had to clear trampolines and sheds from the lines, the rail company added. Dozens of train operators across England, Wales and Scotland have delayed or cancelled services after speed restrictions were imposed on many routes, and many services were finishing earlier than normal. Passengers travelling on Monday evening were urged to travel as early as possible and were advised to check the National Rail Enquiries website or speak to their train company. On a ferry crossing from Portsmouth to Bilbao a passenger had to be airlifted to hospital after falling and injuring their neck. "A lot of us thought the ferry was going over", Catriona Koris told the BBC from on board the ship. The captain had anchored off France while carrier company Brittany Ferries cancelled its Portsmouth to Caen and Plymouth to Roscoff crossings, a spokesman said. Weather forecaster Elizabeth Saary explains why the UK is being hit by wet and windy weather again - and how long it will last The Environment Agency issued flood warnings across much of England and Wales, as well as the severe warning in Weymouth. By Monday afternoon there were more than 50 flood warnings, indicating that immediate action is required, for south-west England, and others in the north-west, north-east and Anglian areas. The agency warned people not to try to drive through floodwater. It warned that driving into just 30cm of water was enough to carry a car away, and advised people to heed warnings and move valuables upstairs if living in a "flood risk" area. Elsewhere: The King Harry Ferry service in Cornwall will not be running The Tamar Bridge, which connects Devon and Cornwall, has been closed to high sided vehicles, caravans and motorbikes Isles of Scilly Travel say all flights on Monday have been cancelled and rescheduled to Tuesday The QEII Bridge at Dartford is closed and will reopen at about 04:00 GMT on Tuesday, Essex Police said, although the tunnels remain open The Inner Distribution Road, a busy commuter flyover in Reading, was closed by the local council as a safety precaution The Highways Agency, which manages major roads in England, is advising drivers of vehicles vulnerable to high winds to avoid certain roads if possible. |

Reading IDR shut as safety precaution owing to weather A busy commuter route in Reading has been closed because bad weather and strong winds blew debris into the road. Reading Borough Council said the flyover section of the Inner Distribution Road (IDR) would remain shut as a "safety precaution". A council spokesperson confirmed it would reopen at 02:00 GMT on Tuesday. It is closed both ways between the A33 and A327 London Street. Diversions are in operation, with traffic congestion at Mill Lane and London Street. "We're not 100% sure if the debris came off the Oracle but it came from that area and fallen into the road," said Simon Beasley, Reading Borough Council's traffic manager. "We now have a situation where everything needs to be checked to make sure [it] is secure and nothing else is going to fall in the road way. So until those checks have taken place, unfortunately the road is going to have to stay closed. We're very much in the hands of the weather." Mr Beasley said experts were on site but the council would have to "be sensible" about how it progressed. Most work would happen after the wind had died down. The IDR is a mostly dual carriageway ring road that encircles the town centre. It forms part of the A329 that runs from Wentworth in Surrey to Thame in Oxfordshire. |

Newbury & Thatcham Chronicle Drink-driving figures in Berkshire down on last year THE number of people arrested on suspicion of drink-driving in Berkshire has fallen 11% compared with this time last year. Between December 1 and 11.59pm on December 22, 73 people were arrested on suspicion of drink-driving in Berkshire against 82 during the same period last year. Thames Valley Police’s ‘Is it worth the risk?’ campaign - which runs until January 1 - is targeting drivers under the influence of drink or drugs on the way home from nights out or the morning after a heavy night before. In Reading, 22 people were arrested on suspicion of drink-driving from December 1 to December 22, compared with 25 during the same period last year while the West Berkshire figure was down from seven to five. In Wokingham there were six arrests, up by one. In the whole of the Thames Valley, there was a 4% increase on the 2012 figure, from 199 to 207. In total 114 drivers were charged, 36 bailed pending further inquiries and 30 released without further action. Out of the 207 arrests, 34 were in the morning. Chief Inspector Henry Parsons, of the joint Hampshire and Thames Valley police traffic unit, said: “It’s worrying that some people are still making the wrong choices, deciding to drink and drive when there are alternatives available. Drink driving is dangerous and it kills or seriously injures many people each year, devastating families. I’m grateful for the public support for this campaign that has helped us to be in the right places, at the right times to make these arrests. We’ll continue to target drink drivers every single day of the year, not just during campaign periods. It isn’t worth the risk.” |

24th December FLOOD warnings are in place tonight on the River Kennet between Theale and the centre of Reading and the River Loddon at Arborfield and Shinfield. The Environment Agency says river levels are “high and rising” along the Kennet from Theale and through Burghfield, Calcot, Southcote and The Oracle shopping centre district in the middle of Reading. The River Loddon is in a similar state where it runs through the villages of Arborfield and Shinfield, The Agency’s official bulletin on both areas and issued just after 4pm said: “Flooding of some low lying properties near to the river is expected. The weather prospects are mostly dry for a time with sunny spells, but scattered squally showers developing, sometimes heavy with perhaps hail and thunder.” Get more detailed information by calling Floodline on 0845 988 1188, |
