Flooded Loddon Bridge park and ride stays closed

A flooded park and ride site in Berkshire will remain closed for the rest of the day.

The Loddon Bridge site in Winnersh, which has a history of shutting after heavy rainfall, has been affected again this week.

Wokingham council said it hoped it would reopen on Saturday but with more rain forecast this could be revised.

On Thursday, motorists across Berkshire endured travel delays after heavy rainfall caused flooding on some roads.

By mid-morning the B4494 Oxford Road in Newbury was barely passable between the Grove Road and Love Lane junctions.

Sandford Lane in Woodley and Emmbrook Road in Wokingham were also closed for a time.

Flood alerts have been issued for Lower River Loddon, the River Pang and the River Blackwater at Swallowfield.

FLOOD warnings remain in place for Datchet, Wraysbury and Old WIndsor as fears rise river levels may reach those last seen in January 2003.

The Environment Agency (EA) warns in its latest update the Thames is continuing to rise slowly and residents should brace themselves for river levels similar to that in 2003 and eclipsing those seen during December 2012. The update also warns residents to expect further flooding, particularly in Old Windsor, as the effects of last night's rainfall are felt.

The update issued last night reads:
"River levels continue to slowly rise in the Old Windsor [and Windsor Park] area, and will continue to do so for at least the next 24 hours. Flooding of properties close to the river is expected. River levels are expected to be higher than those seen during November and December 2012 and close to those of January 2003. The weather forecast is to expect showers tonight that may be heavy in places. These showers will clear by Wednesday morning. Wednesday will be a mainly dry day."

A series of tips have been given for residents who live near the river:

- Act now to protect yourself and your property.

- If it's safe to do so, block doors with flood boards or sandbags and cover airbricks and other ventilation holes.

- If you are caught in a flash flood, get to higher ground. Stay away from flood water and don't take risks.

- Move family, pets and valuables to a safe place.

- Keep a flood kit ready including a torch, batteries, fully charged mobile phone, warm clothes, water, food and any prescription medicines you may need.

- If it's safe, make sure your neighbours are aware of the situation and offer help to anyone who may need it.

- Avoid walking, cycling or driving through flood water.

- Turn off gas, electricity and water if your property is about to flood. Never touch an electrical switch if you are standing in water.

M4 westbound tailbacks after three-car pile-up

Published: 8 Jan 2014 08:11

A THREE-CAR pile-up on the M4 between Maidenhead and Winnersh just before 8am is causing major problems for westbound motorists. Two westbound lanes are shut, with one of the vehicles embedded on the central crash barrier, and traffic is reported to be tailing vack to junction 7 already.

Loddon Bridge roundabout open with limited access

The Loddon Bridge roundabout in Winnersh re-opened this morning (Monday), only being limited to one lane around the outside, following the heavy rain over the weekend.

The central road through the middle of the roundabout is still closed however, while traffic lights at the junction are not in operation.

The Loddon Bridge Park and Ride service is closed throughout the rest of today.

Motorists are urged to approach the junction with caution

UK storms: Further flooding risk as heavy rain forecast

Parts of Britain are at risk of more flooding, as the Met Office forecasts more heavy rain in the coming days. There are more than 100 flood warnings in England, Scotland and Wales.

The Environment Agency has warned there is a continuing risk of flooding in Dorset, south Wiltshire, parts of the Somerset Levels and areas close to the River Thames. A Met Office yellow warning for rain has been issued for south-west England and southern Wales. The warning, which comes into effect at 12:00 GMT on Wednesday and will last until 09:00 on Thursday, also applies to the "western slice" of the Midlands. It says "periods of heavy rain" in these areas could cause further flooding, especially in Wales, Somerset, Devon and Cornwall.

A rain warning for southern and south-eastern England expired at 06:00 GMT. The Environment Agency has issued 114 flood warnings for England and Wales, with the South East and South West the areas most likely to be flooded. In Scotland, 14 flood warnings have been issued by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency, though none is rated severe.

Environment Secretary Owen Paterson told the BBC 86 properties in Oxford had been flooded on Tuesday, and temporary flood defences were installed at one end of the High Street in Guildford, Surrey.
The Environment Agency said properties in several parts of Berkshire had been flooded, including Purley on Thames, Shiplake, Old Windsor, Wraysbury, Bourne End, Datchet and along the lower River Lodden.

The Thames Barrier in London was closed for the 11th successive tide. The Environment Agency said it has closed operationally only 135 times since being built in the 1980s. Environment Agency flood risk manager Paul Mustow said:
"The risk... continues this week, with communities in the South West and South East urged to stay safe and sign up to free flood warnings."

Parts of the south coast and Wales were battered by waves on Monday night, but that threat has receded. In Dorset, sirens sounded in Chiswell on the Isle of Portland for the first time since they were installed 30 years ago, with one English Channel coastguard saying she had never seen such a prolonged storm. And in the Welsh coastal town of Aberystwyth a clean-up began on Tuesday following an "exceptional" wave swell that hit the town on Monday night that led to the evacuation of 250 seafront residents.

There was also travel disruption, with many roads closed due to flooding.

The recent flooding has prompted the UK government to co-ordinate with international partners to gather information on the damage caused from their satellites.
