Flooded Loddon Bridge park and ride stays closed

A flooded park and ride site in Berkshire will remain closed for the rest of the day.

The Loddon Bridge site in Winnersh, which has a history of shutting after heavy rainfall, has been affected again this week.

Wokingham council said it hoped it would reopen on Saturday but with more rain forecast this could be revised.

On Thursday, motorists across Berkshire endured travel delays after heavy rainfall caused flooding on some roads.

By mid-morning the B4494 Oxford Road in Newbury was barely passable between the Grove Road and Love Lane junctions.

Sandford Lane in Woodley and Emmbrook Road in Wokingham were also closed for a time.

Flood alerts have been issued for Lower River Loddon, the River Pang and the River Blackwater at Swallowfield.

Yes, I'm in Woodcote Mike, thanks for the info. My daughter lives in York Road (off Caversham Road) so fingers crossed she'll be ok. My sister-in-law lived in Purley but sold her house and moved to Tilehurst just a couple of months ago, so I think she timed that well!

A RAY of light has been offered to residents across the borough who are still battling flooding.

The Environment Agency (EA) has stated that river levels, though remaining very high, are beginning to fall in Datchet, Horton, Old Windsor and Wraysbury.

While levels reached record heights yesterday at the measuring station at Old Windsor Lock - reaching 1.81m at one stage - the levels recorded by the EA earlier today has fallen to 1.72cm.

Swathes of the villages remain underwater and water levels are expected to remain high for some time yet, but the weather forecast is for dry weather for today.

The latest EA update issued earlier this morning states: "Water levels on the River Thames are still very high but are now falling in the Wraysbury, Datchet, Horton and Old Windsor area. The river will continue to fall slowly over the next few days but will remain high and out in the floodplain for some time. The weather prospects are for a mostly dry day on Sunday with some light rain this evening."

Sandbags continue to be delivered in Horton, Wraysbury and Old Windsor while the Wraysbury Village Hall, in The Green, and the Perserverance pub are open to anyone looking for brief respite with the pub offering free teas, coffee and soup.

The Jubilee River flood scheme is in operation, helping divert water away from around 3,000 homes in Maidenhead, Windsor and Eton.

For aid, the council’s customer service centre can be contacted on 01628 683800. The out-of-hours number is 01753 853517

Road closures

A number of roads remain closed due to flooding including Sutton Road, Cookham Bridge and Cookham Moor Road in Cookham, Meadow Lane and Pococks Lane, in Eton and the A308 Windsor Road between Old Windsor and Egham.

The Cookham causeway will be open for access from 9am-10am and 3pm-4pm.

An eight-seater mini bus has also been provided by People to Places to transport residents from Cookham Village into Maidenhead between 10am and 4pm.

Firefighters have rescued at least three drivers over the past two days who drove their vehicles into flooded roads and have warned drivers to not take such risks.

'Flood risk' with Thames lock keepers cuts

The risk of flooding along the River Thames may increase if the Environment Agency cuts the number of lock keepers, a union has warned. The GMB union says it understands "substantial" cuts are planned. But the agency has insisted any changes would not affect its ability to respond to flooding incidents.

There are 43 resident keepers along the Thames - helping to control water levels - with about the same number working between different sites. The union says it thought plans to reduce staff numbers had been rejected, but now believes the proposals are back on the table.

Frank Minal, from the GMB, says:
"I think the argument is if you take away the facility of residential lock keepers, what impact is it going to have? The lock keepers have been wading around in 3ft of water helping local communities and local people around their localities and that is the sort of thing that would, to all intents and purposes, take a lot longer to respond to [if cuts are made]. At the end of the day, they are the face of the government at the coalface running the river."

The Environment Agency (EA) has said 1,500 posts nationwide are likely to go this year as it seeks to save money. It says the detail of how different teams will be affected has not yet been finalised. In a statement the agency says:
"The planned reductions in posts will not affect the Environment Agency's ability to respond to flooding incidents and the Environment Agency will minimise the impact on other front line services through the changes."

The EA said it was unable to comment further at this stage but says it will engage with unions, staff and customers over the coming months. The GMB says it will fight what it describes as "disgraceful and unpopular changes".

The police closed the riverside in Henley because the river was over the road. I think they've re-opened it now though

The man, in his 30s, is in a serious condition after being rushed to the Royal Berkshire Hospital at around 3.30am. Officers say the man was in collision with a white Ford Transit van.
