Flooded Loddon Bridge park and ride stays closed

A flooded park and ride site in Berkshire will remain closed for the rest of the day.

The Loddon Bridge site in Winnersh, which has a history of shutting after heavy rainfall, has been affected again this week.

Wokingham council said it hoped it would reopen on Saturday but with more rain forecast this could be revised.

On Thursday, motorists across Berkshire endured travel delays after heavy rainfall caused flooding on some roads.

By mid-morning the B4494 Oxford Road in Newbury was barely passable between the Grove Road and Love Lane junctions.

Sandford Lane in Woodley and Emmbrook Road in Wokingham were also closed for a time.

Flood alerts have been issued for Lower River Loddon, the River Pang and the River Blackwater at Swallowfield.

BREAKING: Whitchurch bridge work three months behind schedule

MOTORISTS face a further three months of misery after builders working on Whitchurch Bridge announced the busy crossing will not reopen until mid July.

The shock announcement will come as a hammer blow to both the 6,500 commuters who use the Thames crossing - which was supposed to reopen on April 14 - as well as dozens of businesses on either side of the river.

Builder Balfour Beatty says work has fallen badly behind schedule after the village experienced its highest water levels since 2003 earlier this month, meaning construction workers were not able to float pontoons into the middle of the river needed to complete work on the underside of the bridge.

Work on the 111-year-old iron bridge, which closed in October and was due to reopen on April 14, was already running behind schedule before that after engineers came across complications removing the old structure.

Mike Beckley, Chairman of the Whitchurch Bridge Company, said:
“The Company very much regrets the inconvenience that the delay to the re-opening will cause to local residents, residents on the diversionary routes and local businesses. We will continue to press Balfour Beatty to complete the works as soon as possible."

UK floods: January rain breaks records in parts of England

Early figures suggest parts of England have had their wettest January since records began more than 100 years ago.

The Met Office said much of southern England and parts of the Midlands had already seen twice the average rainfall for January by midnight on Tuesday - with three days left in the month.

And it is warning of more rain, as well as snow and high winds, for much of the UK in the coming days.

In Somerset, the military is preparing to help flooded areas.

Up to and including January 28, the South East and central southern England had 175.2mm (6.9in) of rainfall in January - beating the previous record of 158.2mm for the same parts of England set in 1988.

Across south-west England and south Wales, the 222.6 mm (8.8in) of rainfall up to midnight on Tuesday meant January 2014 was already the fifth-wettest on record.

The Met Office has issued numerous yellow warnings - the lowest of its three alert levels - for the next few days.

A rain warning for south-east England expired at 12:00 GMT, but a new warning covering most of southern England, southern Wales and parts of Northern Ireland has been issued for the period from 08:00 on Friday until the early hours of Saturday morning. Parts of central Scotland and northern England are being warned of snow on Friday.

The Met Office is also warning of high winds for many western parts of the UK on Saturday and Sunday.

Tuns Lane in Slough closed after two-car smash

THE northbound Tuns Lane has been closed after a crash earlier. The road closure has brought traffic to a standstill in the surrounding roads, including Windsor Relief Road and the M4. The road has been closed after a two-car smash, with fuel spilt across the carriageway.

Agency predicts rising river levels and flooding of homes

RESIDENTS living close to the Thames are being warned to expect river levels to continue to rise over the coming days with more flooding of homes predicted.

Flood warnings remain in place for properties closest to the river in Wraysbury, Old Windsor, Hythe End and Ham Island. The latest update from the Environment Agency issued earlier this afternoon states:

"River levels on the Thames in the Old Windsor and Wraysbury areas remain high. River levels are expected to rise slowly over the next few days in response to further forecast rainfall. Further flooding of properties located closest to the river is expected. The current river forecast suggests that river levels in this area could reach a higher level than those seen in January 2003. The weather prospects are to expect some heavy showers at times this afternoon and through the night. Further showers are expected tomorrow morning."

River levels are significantly higher than usual for this time of year, especially at the measuring stations at Old Windsor Lock, Windsor Park and Bell Weir.
