Flooded Loddon Bridge park and ride stays closed

A flooded park and ride site in Berkshire will remain closed for the rest of the day.

The Loddon Bridge site in Winnersh, which has a history of shutting after heavy rainfall, has been affected again this week.

Wokingham council said it hoped it would reopen on Saturday but with more rain forecast this could be revised.

On Thursday, motorists across Berkshire endured travel delays after heavy rainfall caused flooding on some roads.

By mid-morning the B4494 Oxford Road in Newbury was barely passable between the Grove Road and Love Lane junctions.

Sandford Lane in Woodley and Emmbrook Road in Wokingham were also closed for a time.

Flood alerts have been issued for Lower River Loddon, the River Pang and the River Blackwater at Swallowfield.

Reading Borough Council is monitoring flood risk of the Rivers Thames and Kennet - both on flood warning - over the weekend.

Anyone living in the borough, if they require assistance or support, should call the council on (0118) 937 3737.

Island Road has been closed so you can't get to Smallmead Waste and Recycling Centre.

All local league matches booked on Reading Borough Council pitches have been cancelled.

Rivermead Leisure Complex Swimming Pool has been closed
Island Road sounds pretty appropriate considering the circumstances ;)

Water, Water Everywhere - Including Perhaps in the Power Mains?

Per the BBC (link: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-26095937 )

Fire crews are dealing with rising floodwater which is threatening an important electricity substation near Reading. They are bringing in a high-volume pump from Hertfordshire because Berkshire's pump is being used in Somerset. The substation is thought to serve about 40,000 homes and businesses.

Substations are designed to be safe from flooding, but that this one is apparently at risk underscores the remarkable degree of flooding in your area. That resources like these pumps are being moved about speak about the wide area being impacted by this severe flooding. Good luck, and I hope the pump can keep the substation in service!

Brock Barracks in Oxford Road

Soldiers from Brock Barracks have joined the battle against the rising floodwater.

Eight army vehicles set out from the barracks in Oxford Road, West Reading at around 2pm today in support of the efforts of the police, fire crews and local authorities.

Twenty soldiers and reservists were sent to the local authority highways depot in Chieveley in West Berkshire to fill sandbags.

And 57 men and women went off to the electricity substation in Pingewood to help the fire crews who had been battling since 3.45am this morning to hold back floodwater.

Lieutenant Colonel James Bryant, commanding officer at Brock Barracks, told getreading: "These are local soldiers supporting the local community and we are very proud to be doing so.

"It's an example of the utilisation of the Army Reserve and 7 Rifles and I am proud to be doing so here in Berkshire."

The Pingewood substation near Burghfield provides power for 40,000 homes and businesses in the Reading area.

It was also threatened with flooding in December 2010.

Reading Road in Burghfield is currently closed by flooding at the Cunning Man and traffic and buses are having to reroute via the A33.

Now we got the army in!!
