Flooded Loddon Bridge park and ride stays closed

A flooded park and ride site in Berkshire will remain closed for the rest of the day.

The Loddon Bridge site in Winnersh, which has a history of shutting after heavy rainfall, has been affected again this week.

Wokingham council said it hoped it would reopen on Saturday but with more rain forecast this could be revised.

On Thursday, motorists across Berkshire endured travel delays after heavy rainfall caused flooding on some roads.

By mid-morning the B4494 Oxford Road in Newbury was barely passable between the Grove Road and Love Lane junctions.

Sandford Lane in Woodley and Emmbrook Road in Wokingham were also closed for a time.

Flood alerts have been issued for Lower River Loddon, the River Pang and the River Blackwater at Swallowfield.

Labour leader Ed Miliband, on a visit to Wraysbury, said flood defences should be made a higher priority by the government. He said: "I think finger-pointing is not what the Government should be doing, it's rolling their sleeves up and getting on with getting people the help, making sure that all the necessary agencies are working together, all the help is being provided for people." (Implied) "Anyway, we're not in power just now, so we're ever so much better at finger-pointing. And we need to make as much out of this as we can, because it'll be years and millions to 'fix', and those 'fixes' will have to be continued for ever." ;)

TWENTY homes in Colnbrook have suffered internal flooding as water levels continue to slowly rise.

Around two thirds of those homes are still occupied and the Environment Agency has advised that further property flooding is possible.

The latest update read: "Our staff have placed sandbags to raise the level of the Albany Park embankment to try to hold river levels back. We are also continuing our pumping operation, which is helping to reduce the impact of the high river level on the surrounding area. Severe Flood Warnings remain in force for the River Thames at Wraysbury and Horton. Information for these can be found on Floodline using the quickdial numbers 173109 and 173107. River Levels on the Colne Brook remain high due to the Thames influence. This is likely to continue for the next few days. Heavy showers are forecast for today and Wednesday, with unsettled rainfall for the remainder of the week."

Slough Borough Council reopened at 6am this morning, and officers are on standby to assist vulnerable residents and those whose homes become inhabitable.

Call the council's flooding helpline on 01753 875823.

Donations are being encouraged to help the flood victims, with Priory School working alongside the Salvation Army to collect items.

Drop off any items that would help those in need, such as bottles of water, sleeping bags and blankets to Priory School in Orchard Avenue, or at the Salvation Army store in Slough High Street.

For more information call Paula Hindmarch on 07707 928546.

Good old Mr Bean. Like his lot would be any better at dealing with this calamity than the current lot.
