Flooded Loddon Bridge park and ride stays closed

A flooded park and ride site in Berkshire will remain closed for the rest of the day.

The Loddon Bridge site in Winnersh, which has a history of shutting after heavy rainfall, has been affected again this week.

Wokingham council said it hoped it would reopen on Saturday but with more rain forecast this could be revised.

On Thursday, motorists across Berkshire endured travel delays after heavy rainfall caused flooding on some roads.

By mid-morning the B4494 Oxford Road in Newbury was barely passable between the Grove Road and Love Lane junctions.

Sandford Lane in Woodley and Emmbrook Road in Wokingham were also closed for a time.

Flood alerts have been issued for Lower River Loddon, the River Pang and the River Blackwater at Swallowfield.

Parking meter plans near Royal Berkshire Hospital suspended

Plans to introduced parking meters near the Royal Berkshire Hospital have been sent back to the drawing board

Plans to introduce pay and display parking meters round Royal Berkshire Hospital were suspended - but not abandoned. Midwife from Royal Berkshire Hospital Clare Goulbourn-Lay presented an 8,400 signature petition to the Reading Borough Council traffic management committee on Wednesday, June 15, opposing the plan which also included the introduction of more residents' parking in the area.

She urged the councillors to "sort out the chaos that is the hospital" adding that 5,000 people work there. Ward councillors Tony Jones and David Absolom successfully called for the plans which have gone through extensive public consultation to be suspended for another report to the September committee. Cllr Tony Page announced he had been talking this week to hospital managers and they were giving serious consideration to park and ride options based on agreement between the council, the hospital and Reading Buses for a "salary-sacrifice" and fare discount scheme to encourage more staff to use public transport.

Cllr Jones summed up the parking problem as a "living hell" for residents because, with the the University of Reading and the hospital in the Redlands ward area, there was simply not enough parking for everyone. And he pointed out the clear signs that in the "old Redlands area " around Donnington Road, more and more people were calling for residents' parking.

John Sharp, who lives in the area, accused the council of introducing parking meters to raise revenue. Cllr Liz Terry countered that by saying the council's diminishing resources meant it was becoming increasingly difficult for officers to manage the growing demand for residents' parking.

The committee agreed to look again at the scheme to make "further refinements" to the existing proposals and bring forward a further set of proposals for changes in waiting restrictions including more residents' parking schemes.

The motion from Cllr Jones added: "It should be noted that suspending the introduction of the proposals does not mean that they have been abandoned."
